The Billop House
This house is the site of the only peace conference between the British and Americans during the Revolutionary Wareven Benjamin Franklin attended. It is alleged that the house is not haunted by many spirits who occasionally allow themselves to be seen. One apparition is a young woman who was allegedly murdered in the house during the 1700s. There is also said to be a child that plays in an upstairs bedroom. Also, it is rumored that several British soldiers appear in the garden near the trellis.

THE CONFRENCE HOUSE has much more activity. When I was a Teen we used to hang out there all hours of the night….one night we were on the front steps of the Confrence house ,like we did many times. But just in front of us about 70-100 feet we saw what looked like a Priest walk over from the Big tree thats in front of the house. He didnt say a word and kind of floated, well lets just say we didnt stick around very long. There also have been reports of people who walk the Cliffs to the left of the house have seen what appears to be Native Americans, and also claim to hear drums.

Actually, it was the conference house that was the site of the Peace Conference; the Billop house is located further up the same block. You are correct about the british sightings; my sister and her friends swear that they actually witnessed a british invasion one night during the summer of 2002.

Leah – Since when does one live IN StatNisland?? It’s always been *on* StatNisland.
The Billop House and the Conference House are one and the same. I grew up in Tottenville and never heard anything about its being haunted.

I live in Tottenville myself, im curious to know if anybody knows if someone stays in the Billop House overnight, like a care taker. I drive up Saterlee (the block they are located on) when ever i’m driving home if im bored just to check them out. It was about two in the morning if I remember correctly and the lights were on only upstairs not downstairs in the Billop House , seemed pretty wierd to me that the lights would be on this late. Anyone have an explanation?

I can believe that strange things happen in the Conference House. Forty years ago ( or so ) I was a kid growing up on the Island and had made 2 visits to the house. Once with my school and once with my family. I remembered that I had gotten sick to my stomach on Both occasions and at the same locations in the house. At the “closed up” entrance to the “hidden” tunnel in the cellar and also on the stair landing above the first floor. I vaguely remembered these experiences through my early adulthood but never gave them much thought through the years. Having since moved away from the Island, I found a book on New York Hauntings by Hans Holzer about 10 years ago. When I got to the chapter on the Billop House and Conference house I had not really though too much about it until I read about two different places that Apparitions seemed to appear.
One on the stair landing where an apparent murder was reported as taking place a hundred years ago and the other site –the tunnel entrance where wounded soldiers died enroute into the house from their clandestine missions. That put a chill into my spine and has ever since.

we went to the Conference House but it was closed so we went down to the water and were making are way back up towards the house going back to our car when we both looked up at a second storey window and a little girl was looking at us,we were pretty happy as we had come along way and I yelled up at her to let us in and she disappeared!she did not walk away from the window she actually disintegrated like some kind of mist or vapour, vapourized is probably the word. She had curly hair and looked very sad.We ran like ****!Never been back,Never will!

One time..when I was in band camp…we went to the place for band practice and, like, OMG I totally saw, like, Ben Franklin and, like, that woman getting murdered so I, like, told the little kid who was playing on the floor, to like totally get out of my way so I could run to the window and yell down to the British soldiers by the trellis, “Hey dudes..this place is, like, totally haunted and then I realized, OMG, like they were the ghosts too. So, totally, weird.

i have never been to the billop house, but ive been to the conference house and have experienced some freaky things.. during Christmas last year, they had the annual christmas illumination and they had set up the basement of the house for people to buy all old fashioned holiday decorations, anyway… i went upstairs, as we were allowed to tour the house.. i took a couple of pictures, when i looked at them, there was like people in the mirrors in two of the three rooms that are upstairs, when i went downstairs to the basement, there was a tunnel, i was about to walk behind there, but an employee wouldnt let me.. legend has it that the owners of the house had a son who died of, i think it was small pox, im not 100 % sure.. when the child died, they buried him in the wall that is located within the tunnel.. when i left the house, i looked up at the middle window on the top floor, and i saw someone looking back at me, it was a child, a little girl about 7 years old, another legend has it that a little girl fell into the well located next to the garden of the house, the well is now covered by a wooden box.. i wasnt the only one who saw the girl in the window, a women standing next to me saw it and got so freaked out she cried.. anyway, if your into all the ghostly stuff, which im sure you are, you should go visit it.. heres the hours.
The Conference House is open for Guided Tours from April through Mid-December on:
Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays from 1:00pm – 4:00pm
Rates
Children: $2.00
Adults: $3.00
Senior Citizens: $2.00
