You use to be able to climb to the top of the Capitol Building rotunda until a woman jumped to her death in the mid 1970’s.

There is a stairway that is closed to the public that will take you to the very top of the inside of the rotunda. If you go to the 5th floor and lean out over the railing you can see some rickety metal stairs that spiral along the inside of the dome all the way to the top.

The story that I heard was that she drove all the way from Missouri to kill herself in our capitol building. She smoked a cigarette, set her purse aside, and then jumped over the railing. On the way down she clipped the railing on the second floor ripping her arm off at the shoulder. The rest of her body made it all the way down to the first floor where she landed on top of a metal mop bucket while the janitor was mopping the marble floor. I heard that she almost landed on top of the poor guy.

I have been in the Capitol Building hundreds of times and have never experienced anything creepy. From my understanding there has been nine deaths in the Capitol Building, most of them caused by accidents during construction. It is a very old and historic building. It would be very scary to be alone in there in the middle of the night.

I moved to Kansas in 2000 and have been to the capitol building once and heard you could no longer go up into the dome, however, I never heard why. Now I know.

The last time I was at the capital was in grade school, so it was quite awhile ago. I think the only reason we went was because in my Girl Scout troup, one of the girls’ grandfather was Governor or something at the time. We went as a Girl Scout outing. We went up to the top, but couldn’t go any farther. They opened the closed-off stairwell about two years ago or so but I didn’t go. Wanted to, but didn’t.
Question: Why bash people who say they’ve heard or seen something? Just because YOU aren’t open-minded enough to not see/hear anything doesn’t mean OTHERS are.

Wow this is really creepy… i was with my class on our seventh grade feild trip about 2 months ago near the end of the school year. my grade got a special tour that none of the other grades before up that had visited the capitol ever got. we got to go up that ricketey staircase. you know how theres the big dome at the top? we went above that and to the top of the building. it was so windy my friends almost fell off– it kind of scares me to think that thats the whole reason no one gets those types of tours anymore. and to think that i was there and could have died too…

My son went there with his class, and he took pictures of the staircase looking up to the ceiling. We were wondering why there were orbs in the pictures, and maybe this is why!
