The Ezekiel Harris House
During the Revolutionary War, a soldier was hanged from the stairwell of this home. At times, the sound of a man swinging from a taut rope is heard. The soldier himself is also seen from time to time.

To Lori who wanted to know where the house is located, it is located on the Augusta State University in Augusta,Georgia.I’m not sure where it is exactly, but you could go on one of the tours if they ‘re still having them

HI,
I AM A TOUR GUIDE AT THE HOUSE ! IT IS LOCATED ON UPPER BROAD ST. NOT ON THE OLD A.S.U. CAMPUS , AS SOMEONE SAID !
THE HOUSE WAS BUILT IN 1797 , AFTER THE REVOLUTION .IT IS IN WONDERFUL CONDITION AND IS CONSIDERED ONE OF THE BEST PRESERVED FEDERAL HOUSES IN GEORGIA !
AN EARLIER HOUSE ,NO LONGER STANDING NEARBY ,WAS THE McKAY HOUSE WHERE THE PATRIOTS WERE HANGED,BUT THE CURRENT IDEA IS THAT THE GHOST OF THE MOTHER THAT HAD 2 SONS HANGED MOVED TO THIS HOUSE !

Actually, the Ezekiel Harris House Museum is located on Broad Street. If you try looking for it around the college campus, you’re never going to find it. There are some interesting haunted spots on the campus, however.

I remember visiting what was then called the McKay House when i was a kid,(but then i guess they did their homework and said the Mckay house was not the name of the house, but instead the Harris house),anyway, there was an outside stairwell that had a stout beam above the center of the stairs, and we would visit the house and listen to the stories of the hangings. The original story as told to us was, that if you stood on the 13th step and were very quiet you could hear the ghost cry out.
Ther was also a mini model of merchants trading tobacco on the top floor, and then you could visit what was supposedly the kitchen (located in the basement portion of the house). I think the house is worth another visit from me ,and if you have never been maybe it should make it on your list of places to see.

I live behind this house. Never really have seen anything strange. Not saying these accounts are not true, as I have encountered supernatural situations in my house as do most other people who live in the few pre-1900 houses in this neighborhood.

Has anyone ever seen the Boots marching across Broad St. in front of the house. I experienced this last year around 2:oo am in the morning..Was wandering if I was the only one to ever see this. The house is educational alone and a good place to learn some history about the south. I live close by and have heard all the stories but never heard nor seen anything othernthan the Boots.

This is actually not true. I live in Augusta; in the early 1900’s my aunt lived in the home when it was at the time a boarding house. The house that someone was hung (Brown Home if I recall) at was in visable distance from the Harris Home but is no lnoger standing. Both were near the Confederate Powder Works. Contact the Augusta Historical Society and they will be glad to fill you in on the real details.

Until about 1964, the Ezekiel Harris House was MISTAKENLY identified as the Mackay House, also known as Mackay Trading Post, and Fort Brown. The real Mackay House, where the Seige of Augusta and the hangings took place is no longer standing. A fire station occupies that site.
Ezekiel Harris was NOT hung, but died in Wilkes County, Ga., at the age of 71.

My uncle rented a room in that house many years ago when it being used for apartment rentals. He said you could hear noises at night and he only stayed there three nights and moved out. He was a very honest man

Ok, this is how I heard it. It was a soldier but it was a soldier from the war of 1812 who was captured near Savannah. The soldier was brought to Augusta to stand trial and was eventually hung in the house. He was followed by several others. The one about the slave who was caught with his masters wife is down on 8th street (I think) it’s called the whipping post where it is “alleged” that slaves were beaten there. This particualr case was the last slave to be publicly beaten there and he put a curse on the post that is anyone tried to tear it down they would die. once again allegedly 3 people who did try to demolish it died but I have not been able to find proof of it.
