All of you are wrong. The Harris house was owned by a tobacco trader who,due to greedy ,unfriendly business practices eventually went bankrupt.
I suggest you read Edward J. Cashin"s book,"The Story of Augusta".Mr.Cashin lived ,taught history, and sadly passed away here in Augusta. His book is considered to be well researched and written, a treasure trove of Augusta history.
The "White House",as it was known was used by British loyalists who were attacked by Elijah Clark and a company of men.The house was bombarded and put to ruin.Under a flag of truce Clark withdrew his men, and in the ensuing confusion, some were cut off and captured by the men under Thomas Brown, their commander.Following a standing order from British General Cornwallis,13 patriots were hung because they had sworn alligience to the crown, but took up arms against it.
The Harris House is a beautiful house, located on the upper end of Broad St. close to the canal and the cotton mills built latewr, I is nowhere near the campus of ASU,nor did it have anything to do with the Civil War.Harris was long dead by then, having had to sell his property and move away to Wilkes County. He died in 1829.

Soldiers were hung, I don't know if it was in that house. They were hung from a stairwell. Because Henry Duke was one of the soldiers and he was an ancestor of mine.
Check out Jimmy Carter's book. The hornet's Nest.

I reside in Augusta, and i once visited the Ezekiel Harris House. I am an ancestor of the original owner. Just as i was leaving, i snapped a picture of the upstairs nursery and in the picture there is what seems to be a pregnant woman in old victorian styled dress, standing there staring down at me!

this is false.
they got the story wrong, and it's the wrong house. after further study, they realized that the house had nothing to do with a soldier EVER being hung there. i live very close to this house, and know the story well. and to whoever said something about the "indoor stairwell" you're right, there isn't an indoor one, but the legend is said to have happened in the outdoor stairwell. when i went on the guided tour of the home, our guide actually brought up the false story, and told us how it was disproved, and showed us where the 'soldier' was supposedly 'hung'.
but, all in all, my point is, this is untrue.

Ok, this is how I heard it. It was a soldier but it was a soldier from the war of 1812 who was captured near Savannah. The soldier was brought to Augusta to stand trial and was eventually hung in the house. He was followed by several others. The one about the slave who was caught with his masters wife is down on 8th street (I think) it's called the whipping post where it is "alleged" that slaves were beaten there. This particualr case was the last slave to be publicly beaten there and he put a curse on the post that is anyone tried to tear it down they would die. once again allegedly 3 people who did try to demolish it died but I have not been able to find proof of it.
