this is false.
they got the story wrong, and it’s the wrong house. after further study, they realized that the house had nothing to do with a soldier EVER being hung there. i live very close to this house, and know the story well. and to whoever said something about the “indoor stairwell” you’re right, there isn’t an indoor one, but the legend is said to have happened in the outdoor stairwell. when i went on the guided tour of the home, our guide actually brought up the false story, and told us how it was disproved, and showed us where the ’soldier’ was supposedly ‘hung’.
but, all in all, my point is, this is untrue.

I wonder if this is true at all.I do not belive in ghost.Because i have never seen one.when i go their it would be very intristing to find out if this is true.if so i will be amazed

Ok, this is how I heard it. It was a soldier but it was a soldier from the war of 1812 who was captured near Savannah. The soldier was brought to Augusta to stand trial and was eventually hung in the house. He was followed by several others. The one about the slave who was caught with his masters wife is down on 8th street (I think) it’s called the whipping post where it is “alleged” that slaves were beaten there. This particualr case was the last slave to be publicly beaten there and he put a curse on the post that is anyone tried to tear it down they would die. once again allegedly 3 people who did try to demolish it died but I have not been able to find proof of it.

My uncle rented a room in that house many years ago when it being used for apartment rentals. He said you could hear noises at night and he only stayed there three nights and moved out. He was a very honest man

Until about 1964, the Ezekiel Harris House was MISTAKENLY identified as the Mackay House, also known as Mackay Trading Post, and Fort Brown. The real Mackay House, where the Seige of Augusta and the hangings took place is no longer standing. A fire station occupies that site.
Ezekiel Harris was NOT hung, but died in Wilkes County, Ga., at the age of 71.

This is actually not true. I live in Augusta; in the early 1900’s my aunt lived in the home when it was at the time a boarding house. The house that someone was hung (Brown Home if I recall) at was in visable distance from the Harris Home but is no lnoger standing. Both were near the Confederate Powder Works. Contact the Augusta Historical Society and they will be glad to fill you in on the real details.
