The Menger Hotel
This hotel is supposedly the most haunted in the San Antonio metropolitan area. The first of many ghosts is a maid, who was murdered many years ago, and now wanders the upper hallways. Another ghost is that of lady, who is said to have died of a broken heart. Many have reported seeing her in one of the upper rooms of the hotel. The ghost of former President Teddy Roosevelt, who frequented the bar to recruit soldiers for his “Rough Riders” has also been seen.

I stayed at the Menger last year in October 2004 just to see what all the hype was about. Well some friends and I went walking around the “haunted areas” at about 3 am and found nothing but did hear a really errie scream.Other than that the hotel itself is kinda creepy, I guess cause no one else is out in the halls and it is filled with what remined me of funeral music.

Ok, I have been reading most of these comments and have not been too impressed. I know that it is hard to believe that ghosts or other supernatural beings exist. I have stayed in this hotel twice. The first time I stayed in the hotel I was awakened by the sound of footsteps and muffled voices running through the hall. I discounted it as just a bunch drunks coming in from a night on the Riverwalk. About an hour later, I heard the same noise. This time I got up out of bed because I just got a weird feeling. I immediately got out of bed and went to the door, looked out into the hallway and the muffled voices and footsteps stopped. I asked my friend, who was asleep in the other bed, if they had heard anything. They told me I was dreaming.
The second night: while I was taking a shower I had a strange feeling that something was watching me. When looked around the curtain I saw the backside of somone walking out of the bathroom. (I was alone in the room at that time).
That same night: My friend woke me up because he had seen someone or something standing over his bed and then saw them walk walk toward the closet door and disappeared.
The second time we stayed there I was waiting downstairs in the main lobby for my friends and I noticed a faint, hazy figure of a man and woman dressed in an older style of clothes from the early 1900’s. As I walked closer to the man and woman they disappeared. What is so strange about this, I never told anyone about it. One year later my sister and her husband stayed in the same hotel. When they returned from their trip she called me to tell me that she saw the same man and woman in the exact location I had seen them. It is worth checking out if you are ever in San Antonio.

I heard of something possilbly called The Devil’s Backbone. It is said to be a bridge in downtown San Antonio that when you cross it you feel hands grabbing you by the ankles and when you drop a rock on the side of it you never hear it land. Maybe if someone can look it up or something..

I have stayed in this hotel a couple of times. I love it. I have also heard what sounds like people wallking the hallway and muffled voices (conversations you can’t make out) only to open the door and find no one in the hallway.

In December 2004, the place I work had a Christmas Party at the Menger Ballroom, my date and I went for a stroll around midnight around the hotel, we ended up in the lobby on the second floor. We were glaring at a picture of a couple in the hallway, and I made a comment about how they looked like they were hiding something, then as we were looking at a really old mirror next to the table, it got deadly silent. and we heard the chair by the table creak, as if someone sat down and then we heard a slow tapping on the table by the chair we heard creak, it sounded exactly like someone tapping their finger on the tabletop! Curious, my date decided to push on the chair to see if that was the sound we heard and it was, and then he tapped the table to see if that was the sound we heard, and it was! He and I looked at eachother and he looked agonized! He immediately pressed the down button for the elevator which was conviniently right next to us!

My husband and i went to the Menger Hotel on
Tuesday March 22, 2006 our stay was for one night.. this may be funny to most but i offten wonder if this happen to any one eles… just keep in mind we had the heat on in our room… this was a real cold day and night… the low was around 30^ the time we had stayed… A “cold front had hit”
(1st. story ) this is in my room…..
When i feel like some one was there watching me … and mostly it was in the bathroom… when i was taking a shower i had the hot/warm water hit my body when a gust of cold air was be hind me, as the water still hitting me and it was still the same hot/warm water .. and how i know it was the same water is b/c it would hit the back of my legs…. it still felt warm… i couldnt believe it … as well shortly i felt if there was a hand that was on my left side shouder .. As i moved from the water and turnd around to face the water it was still a cold feeling from the front side …
but after my shower i wanted to look around to see if i seen a vent and there was none.
(2nd. thing that happen ….. _)
i was brushing my hair to get ready to leave to walk the river walk i had looked it the mirror for a make up cheak i had notice behind me that there was streams of water from the roof to the floor. The water had streamed down the wall i looked up at the top and found not a one single water stain. I went to the front desk as we left and asked them if there had been any one staying above or next door to us and they told us no… that there was some one that is staying in front of us as well next door to them… and i had asked if they had any ac problems and replyed back with a no. but i had told the lady what i had saw and she asked what room are you in again and i said 3138 the lady said that she had people tell her about that and that werid stuff happens in the rest room .. which is something that i had not told her about.. which freaked me out.. she also said that the water steams happen right before the sprits come.. if its a sign…
(3rd thing that happen)
i couldnt sleep at all .. i am not someone to be scared of sprits or things go bump in the night but i did felt like when i was in bed that i was being watched… at one time i woke up to find a black shadow of a person in the room at the window .. as when i tryed to wake my husband up the sprit left..
(4th thing that happend)
i had layed my socks out on the floor next to me and my pants as well … to come to find out in the moring when we woke up my socks and pants were found on the other sid of the room…
(5th thing that happend.. )
on the second story above the lobby i was taking my last picture my husband was walking down the stairs when he said that he coundnt move i turn to looked at
him he looked like if he was going to fall if some was about to push him but my husband got back to his blance…
as soon as we got our pictures i look at them to see that there are a lot of white orbits in the same area we were at when i was taking the last of our pictures ….
I would like to read some more of people’s stories or feed back…
i would love to stay at the Menger again …
thanks for taking the thim to read this …

How about nursing homes. Woodlawn Hills Care Center was one scary place to work. Nursing staff that worked the graveyard shift swore they would see and hear children crying. I was told it was an orphanage back in the 50’s and the nuns were cruel to the children. That building has been abandoned for over ten years now. Some san antonians say when they pass through the front of the old mansion you could see ghost or people or whatever you want to call it, looking out the window. My sister says it’s probably homeless people that stay there. I say there ghosts. I’ve been working in nursing homes for over 23 years and I’ve heard theres ghost in every nursing home.

I once had to stay in this hotel with my mother, while she was on a business trip. She was off in meetings all day, and I was all alone to wander around the surrounding areas in San Antonio. I do remember being alone a lot in the hotel, walking around, through the lobbies and hallways and such. I do not remember seeing any ghostly figures and what not (i’m pretty sure that’s something you would not forget). Overall, the hotel can be creepy, but no ghosts. At least, I did not see any, if I had, the trip probably would have been more exciting.

My husband and I have stayed at the Menger several times. It is our favorite hotel in San Antonio. We have taken our children there also, and they love it! We have never heard any strange noises or seen any dark shadows. My kids have never seen anything weird either. We have taken pictures all over the hotel and there were never any “white” spots in the photos.

My husband and I were visiting San Antonio for the weekend when we decided to venture into the Menger Hotel. Knowing that it is supposedly haunted and being the big sceptics we are, we weren’t expecting to find much. The place is beautiful, but unfortunately we did not see any ghosts. HOWEVER! I did have a really eerie feeling wash over me when I was in the restroom in the lobby. I felt as though someone else was in the room with me. It sounded as though someone had opened and shut the door. Thinking it was my husband playing a joke on me, I ran right out ready to bust him. But when I ran out he was standing calmly reading something more than 100 feet away. To this day he swears up and down that he didn’t try to scare me, and I believe him! I don’t think I’ve ever experienced such a creepy feeling in my life until that day. We go down to San Antonio a lot, but I’m not so sure we’ll be staying there anytime in the near future!

I’ve also been to the menger hotel one time but not to stay there and sleep but just to check up and visit one of my aunts who was staying there and lived in a different state. Well while my mom was at the front desk to check up where my aunt was stayin’, I was just looking around when I saw a man and woman dressed in early 1900’s clothing. They were just starin’ at me like if I had lobsters crawlin’ out of my ears or somethin’. I smiled at them since I didn’t know what to do, but they just glared at me and dissapeared. That was all I experienced there since my mom changed her mind about visiting my aunt for some reason. Maybe she saw something paranormal too and got scared, I don’t know. Hey this reminds me, I guess I must’ve seen the exact same people you saw, Jesse.

So this is the part where I should be jumping off the computer and hiding under my bed, but I simply love these ghost stories, I don’t mind a spook everynow and then. Well here’s a story for your website, hope you enjoy. I’m only 24 years old and ever since I was a child I saw many ghosts, male, female, young, and old. When I was about 20 years old, my friends and I were starving and stopped to get a bite to eat at the Fuddruckers down, now I had been to a Fuddruckers before but not that one which really had me curious as if there was any ghostly activity going on. As soon as I walked in the door, I got this feeling as If all eyes were on me, seeing that there were only 4 people in the restraunt, not including the people working, it seemed as If it were hundreds. As I sat down I had the urgency to use the restroom not knowing that it was downstairs kind of gave me the creeps. I was in the restroom and closed the door, when I heard footsteps walk in, flush the toilet, and washed their hands, but yet I was looking under the entire time and nobody except me, or so I thought, so I raced out the bathroom to see who it was, and as soon as I walked out the door. I felt ice cold hands touch my neck, I don’t scare easily but lets just say I slept with the light on for the next couple of nights.

The Gunter hotel has my vote for the most haunted hotel in San Antonio, Texas. It was a favorite hang out for ranchers, many of whom had taken cattle up the Chisolm Train in their younger days.
My grandmother used to take me there for lunch when I was a little girl. I met some of these people and didn’t realize how famous they were until I was majoring in history in college.
It has been a long time but any time I went to the Gunter as an adult I felt people like Mr. Goodnight were still in the lobby occuping the big comfortable chairs and watching people come and go.

I used to work at the menger and had a few experiences of my own. I truely loved working at a place so rich in history and mystery.First of all the ghost stories are true. Mr. Malacara tells you about all the different ghosts during training. I was excited to hear about so many different ghosts and was in hopes that I would have an encounter with at least one of them. Of course I had to have my encounter with the one that I did not want to have anything to do with, Mr. King of the Kingville ranches. It is said that he was not a very nice person when he was alive so it made me think he wouldn’t be a very nice ghost either. However my encounter with him was somewhat playful, even though it scared the **** out of me at the time. I had to go check on the suites as we had VIP’s coming in the next day and we were still uncertain as to which suite to put them in. I made my rounds without running into any of the other ghosts even though I was in the older section of the hotel very late at night. The King suite was last on my stop and I opened the door and turned on the light…being so late I let the door close behind me, normally we leave them open if we are inside a room. I was half way across the sitting room of the suite when the lights turned off. So i ran out of the room freaked out. I stood on the outside of the door and calmed myself down. I opened the door again and had to switch on the light switch AGAIN.. So whatever was happening to me the bulb in the lamp wasnt just bad like I had first thought. I got to the same spot in the sitting room again and the lights went out again. I ran back out. As scared as I was though I wanted to check out the rest of the room, but being as I was scared I decided to call down to Luis the resturants manager. He came up (reluctantly) and we entered the room again… I again had to flip the light switch to turn the lights back on. this time Mr King’s ghost let us get all the way into the bedroom till he turned the lights off again I dont know why I brought Luis with me he was out of the room faster than I was. I decided I had had enough and that it was possible that Mr. King did not want those people staying there and that is exactly what I told my mamger. They sent engineering up to the room the next day anyway and there wasnt anything going on with the electricity. So that is my experience with Mr. King its not so scarey now that I look back on it but it sure was that night. lol

Mr. king owner of king ranch passed away in this hotel. his suite i believe is still there, have not been back in awhile. after he died and the place was renevated or whatever, the door to his room had been slightly relocated. people have seen him come from across the hall and walk through the wall where the door to his room had used to be. i have witnessed this twice. the second time he starred right at my friend an i.

You should look into the King Suite story. King, owner of King Ranch passed way here. His ghost has been said to be seen walking through the wall by many including myself. Reason he is seen walking through the wall is because when the place was renovated or what ever his door to his room had been slighly moved to the side.

You all have wonderful stories, and i do believe The Menger Hotel is “really” haunted. Let me explain. I am from the King Ranch, which was founded by Richard King in 1853. Richard King stayed at that hotel the last days of his life. He died in the hotel April 14th, 1885. He was buried in San Antonio until his men could move him back to Kingsville TX, were he lived. It is known that he haunts the room they named after him…”The King Suite”. Well, i wanted to know if the stories of my grandfather’s were true. I am kin to many Cowboys who actually worked for Mr. King. So I made reservations to stay in “the King Suite” for 3 days and 2 nights. I was meeting up with some buddies I have who live in San Anton. We had a roping event, so I had to get to bed early. While I was heading to my room, I saw him…Richard King. I completely froze, my heart started pounding, I felt a heat wave going through my body. Then, as if some relief and peace overwhelmed me, I smiled. And he smiled back. He walked through the wall on the right side of where the actual door is. My pappy told me before they remodeled the hotel, the original door was to the right of where the door is now. Mr. King goes through the wall where the door used to be. I then opened my door, and saw nothing. Later that night after a bath, I felt as if someone was in the room with me. So I started talking out loud, I started talking to Mr. King. But no reply. I finally introduced myself. I said my full name and where i come from and why i was there. I got a reply. He said “hello Vanessa, I know your last name and i respect it. You come from some good, hard working blood”. I herd him say those words plain as day. There was no wierd noises or no scary screams, just a voice. A voice that was so clear is was piercing. This is no joke. I am very proud to tell this story. I left it like that. I smiled a big smile and fell right to sleep. I stayed another night there. But i didn’t see or hear from Mr. King that last night. I didn’t mind, I was talked to and addressed my “The Richard King”. I loved it and will go back again soon. It was an honor.

I am not going to go into complete detail about my stay at the Menger Hotel but I will say that it is very haunted. I had a room on the 2nd floor in the old section of the building and me and my two friends had a few experiences there. Within 2 minutes of being there, the radio turned on by itself. Later on, my friend saw orbs in one of the rooms (we had a double room) so I took a photo and on the photo were about 6 orbs or so. My other friend saw a flashing coming from the curtain and took a picture and an orb came out on that picture also. We took a picture of the steps when we felt a cold chill and on the photos, there appears to be what looks like a blood stain. I don’t remember seeing that on there when we took the photo. The television turned on by itself and during the middle of the night, we heard clicks and whispers. We took a video camera and an audio recorder because we knew it was haunted. We could hear voices and whispers on the audio recorder. We had one crazy night and thats because I didn’t go into detail and I left some parts out. I loved staying there and I would love to stay there again. I got everything I wanted out of that trip.

My wife and I stayed at the Menger in 1995 and had no idea about its haunted past. The travel information we consulted while planning our trip mentioned nothing about it. When we checked in we were given the King Suite for the same rate as a regular room, which was odd because we NEVER get automatic upgrades in our travels. We would soon find out why. At 5 a.m. my wife woke me up to say she had just seen a ghost walk through the wall, look directly at her for a few seconds and then disappear. She thought he was wearing a military uniform. Strangely, she was not shaken up by the experience, saying matter-of-factly that he didn’t seem scary and that it was actually pleasant if you can use that term to describe a ghostly encounter. Even more strangely, I am the one with the vivid imagination while she is more pragmatic, always looking for a logical explanation for supernatural phenomena. But she couldn’t explain this away!
Of course, this experience piqued our curiousity about just who this ghost was. We figured it was an Alamo soldier and for years I believed it was Col. William Travis, whose plaque commemorating the spot where he died is right below the King Suite balcony. Further research, however, now has me believing it was Richard King, despite the wardrobe discrepancy. I am actually envious of my wife because she didn’t wake me up in time to see him.

These are fantastic stories. Me and my friend are always trying to find hauntings like you have had but not been so fortunate. We had heard the upstairs of Pat O’Briens downtown was haunted. The manager took us up there, we had a chilling sensation to the skin but not much more than that, I have got to stay at the Menger Hotel now. Is it a very expensive hotel (I would imagine the King Suite is quite pricey), but gosh it’s got to be worth it. Can you just walk around the property or do they discourage that? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks

I went there monday night to visit the bar and to walk around. It is fine with management as long as you are quiet and do not disturb the other guests. My friend and I were on the 3rd floor when she received a call from someone on her phone named John. It was someone she had not spoken with in a long time. She tried calling the number back twice and he did not answer. As she was trying to call, I told her i felt an urge to go back thru the hallway. I stopped in front of a man’s picture and looked up, he was the second owner of the hotel ( first name John). I called my friend over and it was the same place the phone had rung. Coincidence maybe, when she did get a hold of her friend John she asked why he called and he said he didn’t know, just an urge to call. We went back to the bar and the manager came to talk to us and document the experience. The 3rd floor is definately active in the paranormal sense. We did feel cold places and we will return again.

I stayed at the Menger Hotel last summer with my uncle cousin sister and aunt. When we were checking into it i also had to go to the restroom and i also experienced the same thing in the bathroom as the lady up there did. Also when we got into our room and settled in, we found we didnt have any towels so my uncle opened the door and seen there was a maid down the hall from our room so he tried getting her attention and she ignored him. So tryin to help i walked to the end of the hall to ask the women for some more towels but when i got to the end of the hall and turned the corner she wasnt there. Maybe she had went into a room or something, but hearing all th stories it kind of freaked me out. Also at like 1 o’clock in the morning my family was laying in our beds and me and my sister were sleeping in the bed closest to the window. i was facing the door and for a split second i seen a tiny flash of light on the wall, not sure if it was an orb or not but i believe it might have been.

OKAY, I HAVE BEEN THERE AND IT IS PRETTY DANG SCARY. AND THE SAD THING IS, IS THAT I LIVE ABOUT 15 MINUTES AWAY FROM IT. BUT THAT ISNT THE SCARIEST IN SAN ANTONIO. GO TO THE WITTE MUESUM IN DOWN TOWN SAN ANTONIO EVEN THOUGH ITS A MUESEUM AND THAT IS JUST WHERE YOU LEARN ABOUT THE INDIANS AND ALL THAT. ITS STILL CREAPY. I HAVE GONE THERE SINCE I WAS ABOUT 6 YEARS OLD. AND EVERYTIME I GO I FEEL LIKE PEOPLE ARE WATCHING ME AND FOLLOWING ME. THE BACK OF MY NECK GETS THE CHILLS. I HATE IT BECAUSE I CAN NEVER LEAVE MY MOMS SIGHT CAUSE ILL START FREAKIN OUT. BUT YEAH OTHER THAN THATS ITS PRETTY KOOL AND INTERESTING.

I live in San Antonio and honestly, of all the places they say are haunted, most of them are just a bunch of hoax. They are stupid, retarded, and just put there to help crappy hotels get people’s money. The only haunting in San Antonio that actually stands true is the one about the children on the Railroad tracks. So if you just want to get ripped off and lose some money, you can visit these crappy hotels and thier fake hauntings. >_<

Chelsea does not know what she is talking about – I am born and raised in San Antonio, and if you think The Menger is “crappy” you have never been! It is gorgeous and elegant and full of history – I stayed there on my honeymoon (had eerie bathroom experience, btw). My father worked at The Institute of Texan Cultures and saw ghosts, as many employees there did, and had the extremely heavy locked “haunted hearse” door open in the night several times over the few years he worked there. Funny you mention the train tracks, which you say is the only real haunted place when it has been officially debunked! What looks uphill is an optical illusion, it is actually downhill, that is why the car moves in neutral, and the fingerprints are your own.

I have been to the Menger Hotel. My boyfriend, mom and i were taking pictures as my mom took a picture of us and there was a bright light beside us. She thought something was wrong with the camera so she took another one but nothing was there.
After that i looked up th history of the hotel. There was a maid named Sallie White back in those days if your wife back talked or mad the husband mad he could kill her and it was illegal, one she mad him very mad and he shot her 3 times in the stomach and killed her. Well she didnt have any money so the Menger Hotel paid for her funeral service and casket (in the lobby look in the glass display and there is a book with the receipt for the casket) so she is suspose to be haunting the hotel.

Stayed at the Menger Hotel over Halloween weekend 2008. In the bar, got a very clear picture looking out from behind Teddy’s picture hanging over the bar. Soldier, probably. Also in the bar loft, a little girl supposedly died there, appeared in one of my digital photos and my sister’s as well. Felt weird in our room all night, but didnt see anything, just freezing. In the lobby restroom (ladies) felt like someone or something was watching me. Tons of orbs in most all photos at the Alamo and Menger bar.
Has anyone else felt these things there before??
We can’t wait to go back and experience more………

OMG how scary. We dont live in the usa but we believe in al types of supernatural things. Nickiie lives in a house we think is haunted and last night we tryed to contact the spirit in the house and we never saw then but we felt them. it was really scary and then this morning we tryed to
contact them again and nothink happened. we believe it to be her grandad who passed away in 2003. We dont know how it got here and what it wants but we know he is trying to potect nickiie from somethink or someone. You might be thinking we are makoing it all up but were not. we are really scared and we never got to sleep because we felt somethng touching us on our arms everytime we tryed to fall asleep. was it just our minds or was it somethink more.

I was at the Menger Hotel this weekend…I came home to tell my family the hotel was HAUNTED!! I did not know of its history….But I found it amazing that my stories of the hotel are the same….I saw Sallie White….I saw on the 2nd floor, of the hotel with a cart of towles and Dirty Blankets…She was wearing a grey skirt and bandana…We also had light that flickered alot….We could hear banging on the doors… and my friend who was in the hotel also felt someone touch her head but no one was there….Weird….But I do believe the Hotel is most definately haunted…I feel strange that I experienced it and never knew prior to staying.

At the Menger Hotel, we visted san antonio last weekend and this is so weird! my sister noticed something… outside of the building, their are only 3 floors… but inside, their are 5! anyways, we walked up the 4th floor, the stairs are really creaky so, when we went upsairs, we read a sign on the door that said ” Do No Disturb”. here’s the scary part! when we were at the end of the hallway, my mom just randomly looked back, and she saw a women, with a gold servng tray with nothing on it,a black dress, and guess what? the women just… walked through the door and didn’t even open it! then we walked again and we saw this man who came out, and had a wooden tray, o we KNEW that that was a ghost with that gold serving tray!

Well i have never stayed there before since i live in san antonio, But i do have a family member that has stayed there once and she said that while she is walking down the hallways she felt like if someone was behind her she would turn around and look but no one was there. Then she went to her room and she was in there alone she was just laying on the bed listening to music then she heard something drop in the bathroom she went to go look nothing was on the ground she thought nothing of it at first but then when she was walking back to the bed she saw from the corner of her eye that there was a figure standing up against the wall she quickly turned around and saw no one, there was no coat or jacket theat made a body figure. Then she night hit and she was a sleep she heard someone out side of her door talking she went to go look she saw no one in the hall. she went back to sleep then she heard someone or something in the bathroom walking around she got up to go look she saw no one. Then she walk up the next day she was taking a shower and then she saw some black figure at the door way just standing there she quickly turned off the shower and looked then it was gone she went down stairs after wards and asked about any history or reports about the room she was in they said that there has been many reports about the room and many other rooms. they also said that people have reported many things that was happening to her. she stay one more night to see if it would happen again. this time she saw a man standing at the foot of her bed looking at her and then walk towards the bathroom and slowly disappeared. she turned on the light and kept them on she finally fell asleep when she woke up the lights were off she thought at first that the light s have an energy saver but then she saw that the swich of the lights were on off. while she was packing she put one of her shirts on the bed and quickly went to the restroom when she returned she saw the shirt on the floor on the other side of the bed she didnt know how it got there. She said that this was the most exciting trip she has ever takin and that she hopes that other people enjoyed the trip to.

I went to the hotel this weekend and walked the halls! we didnt have any strange feelings it was only about 11 pm. The history is enough reason to stay there….it is a great feeling to have walked the same halls as so many people. I want to stay in the king ranch suit even if we dont see or feel anything just imagine staying in the exact same room as someone from the 1900’s I can wait to go back spring break
