Real Haunted Houses

Real Haunted House

The Menger Hotel

San Antonio, Texas

This hotel is supposedly the most haunted in the San Antonio metropolitan area. The first of many ghosts is a maid, who was murdered many years ago, and now wanders the upper hallways. Another ghost is that of lady, who is said to have died of a broken heart. Many have reported seeing her in one of the upper rooms of the hotel. The ghost of former President Teddy Roosevelt, who frequented the bar to recruit soldiers for his “Rough Riders” has also been seen.

I am not going to go into complete detail about my stay at the Menger Hotel but I will say that it is very haunted. I had a room on the 2nd floor in the old section of the building and me and my two friends had a few experiences there. Within 2 minutes of being there, the radio turned on by itself. Later on, my friend saw orbs in one of the rooms (we had a double room) so I took a photo and on the photo were about 6 orbs or so. My other friend saw a flashing coming from the curtain and took a picture and an orb came out on that picture also. We took a picture of the steps when we felt a cold chill and on the photos, there appears to be what looks like a blood stain. I don’t remember seeing that on there when we took the photo. The television turned on by itself and during the middle of the night, we heard clicks and whispers. We took a video camera and an audio recorder because we knew it was haunted. We could hear voices and whispers on the audio recorder. We had one crazy night and thats because I didn’t go into detail and I left some parts out. I loved staying there and I would love to stay there again. I got everything I wanted out of that trip.

My wife and I stayed at the Menger in 1995 and had no idea about its haunted past. The travel information we consulted while planning our trip mentioned nothing about it. When we checked in we were given the King Suite for the same rate as a regular room, which was odd because we NEVER get automatic upgrades in our travels. We would soon find out why. At 5 a.m. my wife woke me up to say she had just seen a ghost walk through the wall, look directly at her for a few seconds and then disappear. She thought he was wearing a military uniform. Strangely, she was not shaken up by the experience, saying matter-of-factly that he didn’t seem scary and that it was actually pleasant if you can use that term to describe a ghostly encounter. Even more strangely, I am the one with the vivid imagination while she is more pragmatic, always looking for a logical explanation for supernatural phenomena. But she couldn’t explain this away!
Of course, this experience piqued our curiousity about just who this ghost was. We figured it was an Alamo soldier and for years I believed it was Col. William Travis, whose plaque commemorating the spot where he died is right below the King Suite balcony. Further research, however, now has me believing it was Richard King, despite the wardrobe discrepancy. I am actually envious of my wife because she didn’t wake me up in time to see him.

These are fantastic stories. Me and my friend are always trying to find hauntings like you have had but not been so fortunate. We had heard the upstairs of Pat O’Briens downtown was haunted. The manager took us up there, we had a chilling sensation to the skin but not much more than that, I have got to stay at the Menger Hotel now. Is it a very expensive hotel (I would imagine the King Suite is quite pricey), but gosh it’s got to be worth it. Can you just walk around the property or do they discourage that? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks

I live in San Antonio and have passed by The Menger hotel mamy times. I’ve always wanted to just visit. Will management let me do that? Or do I have to actually be staying there?

I went there monday night to visit the bar and to walk around. It is fine with management as long as you are quiet and do not disturb the other guests. My friend and I were on the 3rd floor when she received a call from someone on her phone named John. It was someone she had not spoken with in a long time. She tried calling the number back twice and he did not answer. As she was trying to call, I told her i felt an urge to go back thru the hallway. I stopped in front of a man’s picture and looked up, he was the second owner of the hotel ( first name John). I called my friend over and it was the same place the phone had rung. Coincidence maybe, when she did get a hold of her friend John she asked why he called and he said he didn’t know, just an urge to call. We went back to the bar and the manager came to talk to us and document the experience. The 3rd floor is definately active in the paranormal sense. We did feel cold places and we will return again.

Well i just stayed in the menger about 2 days ago and I had an encounter with a ghost. It was about 7:30 in the morning. My Cousin had took a picture on the 3rd floor of the menger. It had a couple of ghosts in it like it had 4 men sitting on a bench. When she was showing my sister this picture, my sister saw the reflection of a man…… THAT WASN’T IN THE REAL PICTURE!!!!! they were the only 2 there and they are 2 girls. It was really freaky!!!

I stayed at the Menger Hotel last summer with my uncle cousin sister and aunt. When we were checking into it i also had to go to the restroom and i also experienced the same thing in the bathroom as the lady up there did. Also when we got into our room and settled in, we found we didnt have any towels so my uncle opened the door and seen there was a maid down the hall from our room so he tried getting her attention and she ignored him. So tryin to help i walked to the end of the hall to ask the women for some more towels but when i got to the end of the hall and turned the corner she wasnt there. Maybe she had went into a room or something, but hearing all th stories it kind of freaked me out. Also at like 1 o’clock in the morning my family was laying in our beds and me and my sister were sleeping in the bed closest to the window. i was facing the door and for a split second i seen a tiny flash of light on the wall, not sure if it was an orb or not but i believe it might have been.

OKAY, I HAVE BEEN THERE AND IT IS PRETTY DANG SCARY. AND THE SAD THING IS, IS THAT I LIVE ABOUT 15 MINUTES AWAY FROM IT. BUT THAT ISNT THE SCARIEST IN SAN ANTONIO. GO TO THE WITTE MUESUM IN DOWN TOWN SAN ANTONIO EVEN THOUGH ITS A MUESEUM AND THAT IS JUST WHERE YOU LEARN ABOUT THE INDIANS AND ALL THAT. ITS STILL CREAPY. I HAVE GONE THERE SINCE I WAS ABOUT 6 YEARS OLD. AND EVERYTIME I GO I FEEL LIKE PEOPLE ARE WATCHING ME AND FOLLOWING ME. THE BACK OF MY NECK GETS THE CHILLS. I HATE IT BECAUSE I CAN NEVER LEAVE MY MOMS SIGHT CAUSE ILL START FREAKIN OUT. BUT YEAH OTHER THAN THATS ITS PRETTY KOOL AND INTERESTING.

I live in San Antonio and honestly, of all the places they say are haunted, most of them are just a bunch of hoax. They are stupid, retarded, and just put there to help crappy hotels get people’s money. The only haunting in San Antonio that actually stands true is the one about the children on the Railroad tracks. So if you just want to get ripped off and lose some money, you can visit these crappy hotels and thier fake hauntings. >_<

Chelsea does not know what she is talking about – I am born and raised in San Antonio, and if you think The Menger is “crappy” you have never been! It is gorgeous and elegant and full of history – I stayed there on my honeymoon (had eerie bathroom experience, btw). My father worked at The Institute of Texan Cultures and saw ghosts, as many employees there did, and had the extremely heavy locked “haunted hearse” door open in the night several times over the few years he worked there. Funny you mention the train tracks, which you say is the only real haunted place when it has been officially debunked! What looks uphill is an optical illusion, it is actually downhill, that is why the car moves in neutral, and the fingerprints are your own.
