Real Haunted House

The Old Bermuda Inn

Staten Island, New York

This period restaurant is located in house that dates back to 1814. Allegedly, the house is haunted by a young female apparition. “Please use correct grammar, capitalization, and punctuation. Let’s try to keep this place looking classy. Real Haunts reserves the right to remove any comment that does not adhere to this requirement or is otherwise inappropriate.”

Can you believe that they are asking for correct grammar.
Well my question to you is about the woman seen WALKING THROUGH THE DINING AIR!!!!! What is that supposed to mean? For someone who wants proper grammar maybe you should do a read through and a spell check before submitting your stories.

THERE ARE MANY MORE PLACES ON STATEN ISLAND THAT PEOPLE SEEM TO FORGET. A BIG ONE IS SNUG HARBOR. I BELIEVE THERE ARE 3 BUILDINGS THAT ARE EXTREMELY HAUNTED. MY MOTHER USE TO MANAGE THE BOTANICAL GARDEN GIFT SHOP THAT WAS 100% HAUNTED. IT WAS AN OLD MORGUE FOR THE SAILORS. I REMEMBER THE ODOR IN THE BACK ROOM PANTRY. ONE OF THE CHANDLEIRS FELL ONE NIGHT WHEN I WAS CLOSING UP WITH MY MOTHER- NOT TO MENTION THE COLD CHILLS BY THE DRAINS IN THE MIDDLE ROOM. THERE WAS 2 MAJOR HAUNTINGS AS WELL BUT THE PLACES NO LONGER EXIST. ONE OF THEM WAS THE HORMAN CASTLE WHICH NOW HOUSES 6 LARGE MANSIONS AT THE TOP OF GRYMES HILL. ALSO THE TUNNLES THAT CONNECTED THE HORMAN HOUSE TO THE WINERY (CLUB 700). WHEN I WAS LITTLE MY FRIENDS AND I WOULD PLAY IN THE TUNNLES (THEY STILL EXIST BUT THE ENTRIES ARE COVERED UP WHEN THEY TORN THE LANDMARKS DOWN.WE SAW A MAN WITH A LANTER BUT WHEN WE RAN UP (WE THOUGHT IT WAS ONE OF OUR BUDDIES) HE WAS GONE. WE ALSO USE TO HEAR HOURSES. THAT WAS ALWAYS THERE WHEN WE HUNG OUT. WE LOVED IT. I WISH IT WAS STILL THERE.

ok- first of all, you forgot HISTORIC RICHMOND TOWN. on the cornor of aurthur kill road, and richmond road on the left hand side(comming from aurthur kill) is a small white house with a green cellar door on the left side of the house. there was a fire from the wooden stove, and two brothers burned in the second story. when you have the chance, pass by the house, park your car, walk up to the house with a flashlight, and look at the left hand second story window and tell me what you see. you will see what appears to be a young boy. i’m not joking. some see apparitions(ones who believe enough), and some don’t. and lastly-the old bermuda inn is haunted people. the woman did kill herself waiting for the return for her loved one. i felt her presence in the last stall(handicapped one) on the 1st floor ladies room. i felt really cold, and my stall light dimmed on and off for a minute as i was going to the bathroom during my cousin’s wedding reception dinner back in 2003!

i think its true because the woman did that to someone i know i also went there!

Jessica Mersereau says:

October 9, 2006, 12:50 am

Hello….I believe that this is true because the woman whom haunts the Old Bermuda Inn is my relative, Martha Mersereau. She and her husband lived in that home until he was called to war. She waited and waited there for him, but he never came home. She died waiting for him, never believing that he was killed at war. That’s the whole story….

selene says:

October 14, 2006, 5:21 pm

i’m sorry but i don’t believe that this story is true. Maybe there are spirits and even ghosts but how are you so sure that these stories ar true. The mind plays a lot of weird games you know.

Denise Smith says:

October 16, 2006, 1:51 pm

To Jessica Mersereau, I read your comment re the Old Bermuda Inn, never been there – but will be going there for dinner soon. A possible reason for ghosts not bothering with certain people – maybe the ghost don’t like the person. (Just joking.) All kidding aside I do really and truly believe in ghosts – when my grandfather (mother’s father) died I would see his ghost for a short time after he died and I was not afraid. So all you others with closed minds – open up -you might one day just see a ghost or an orb or such.

Well i believe that the old bermuda inn is haunted. just some time ago my cousins and i went there to celebrate a close family friends’50th birthday on the 1st floor. we were taking pictures in the lobby and wandered upstairs. there was a feeling that someone was watching us. we went onto the outside balcony. my cousin jill sat on the balcony she felt someone pushing her over the edge. when she got down she was panting because she felt that someone was pushing on her chest and making it hard for her to breathe.

Hey guys,

I went to the OBI and did not feel anything strange yet. However, I did go to Richmondtown a while back (I used to shop at a place called The Marriage House)
It was a little shop in a house where a Judge performed marriages. One day I was there and I and I swear I saw the back of a bride (vail and flowers on her arm) going up the stairs. I didn’t say anything for fear that people would think I was crazy but as I was leaving a lady came in and said “wow, I smell roses” weird right?

I was there once a long time ago for a friend’s Bah Mitzvah, and after reading what people have said I am recalling seeing a portrait of a lovely young woman there and being oddly captivated by it. I went upstairs just to explore and I definitely had an odd feeling and didn’t like the way the area made me feel.

Laura says:

March 26, 2008, 4:51 pm

I had my engagement party there in the new party room that used to be the basement. I have also wandered around the place by myself because my aunt is good friends with the manager. I hate to ruin it for people but I have seen ghosts in my life at least 4 or 5 times and I know it was real, but I have not yet seen anything or felt anything in this place. I really do not feel it is haunted and I went there hoping to see something. I am usually sensitve to this stuff…but like I said… nothing.

We are paranormal investigators and are planning a trip to Bermuda the first week in May. Are carry with us equipment consist of EVP recorder, night vision HD video recorders, EMF meters, Boom mike recorders, tempter recorders and the like. Using scientific methods we have managed to record both apparitions and voices that to this day can not be debunked by other professional investigators. Our plans are to visit the Bermuda Inn, equipment in hand. Are there any other places that we can investigate with out breaking the law or trespassing on privet property?

Mitchell says:

August 25, 2008, 11:12 am

I live near the Old Bermuda Inn, and I can tell you first hand that it is haunted. The story about the lady waiting for her husband to return from war is tru, but what most people don’t know is that she was eventually informed that her husband was killed. That night she threw herself out of the highest window and died. On certain night’s you can hear her crying and then you hear a scream. If you look at the floor below the window, usually the dust/dirt is kicked up at the spot where she would have landed, right after you hear the scream. This is usually followed by her apparition moving from the spot on the floor, back towards the house (but it soon dissapears.) A lot of people on Staten Island have seen this, or at least heard about it – I heard the scream one night – but I didn’t see anything.

Eddie says:

August 25, 2008, 10:35 pm

Mitchell do you know at what time or day the scream is heard

this might be off topic but my fiance and i had a weird experience a couple of days ago. we were just getting ready for bed and my fiance told me she couldnt sleep so i told her to face me so i could hold her and put her to sleep. as she turned to me we both heard a raspy voice say WHY…..WHY. we stood so still then after about 2 minutes or so i decided to get up and in the apartment it was so hot. i opened my bedroom door and saw her mother laying on the couch she must have fallen asleep watching tv. as i walked closer to her i started feeling so cold and this heavy feeling on my chest. it looked like she wasnt breathing at all. i ran back to my room and told my fiance to go check her it took us five minutes to wake her up it was the scariest s**t i ever experienced. i told this to my co workers they didnt believe me im a strong believer of the paranormal and my fiance and i know what we heard

I live about 10 minutes from the Old Bermuda Inn and I have been there for many parties and family gatherings, it is 100 % NOT haunted.

sam says:

October 5, 2008, 5:42 pm

Okay, the Old Bermuda Inn is indeed haunted. I’ve been there for many family parties and gatherings. If you go in the elevator after midnight, yes there is a force in there. The lights flicker and it takes a long time to get from the second to 1st floor. Also, the bathroom on the seocond floor deffinatly has the old women there, expecially at night, make sure you never go to the bathroom alone there, literally, because the stalls are like little rooms, and that ghost doesnt care if youre peeing or what not. .she will make the little hairs on the back of your neck stand right up. I also live by it, and myself and many other people whom reside on staten island will tell you, it is haunted, and that lady did kill herself and she is still in that building.

Jason says:

I’m doing some 900 word essay for my English class and I’m trying to find enough websites and information for my Bermuda ghost topic, but JEESH!! This isn’t a place in Bermuda. O well. *sigh* I believe in ghosts, though. And I really want to see a ghost!!! But I don’t want to be scared out of my mind.

Sara says:

March 2, 2009, 11:22 am

This is true because I know pleanty of people who have had experiences in the old part of the building because that is the location where Martha haunts the restaurant. Both me and my mom had experiences where lights flickered on and off 3 times and plates being thrown against the wall.

L'Aura says:

April 13, 2009, 5:57 am

I went to the Bermuda Inn yesterday to grab some external photos as I’m looking to include this in my next book, “Ghosthunting New York City”. What would have been the original structure is so buried within the cheesey “Bermuda pink” massive reception hall addition. It’s possible activity, if there truly is any, may have kicked up when the addition was being built, but I can’t say for sure until I get to interview some employees there, if they’re even open to being interviewed. Meanwhile, if any of you have your own personal experiences at the Bermuda Inn or its little quaint Wedding Cottage and are open to sharing, please send them to me at laurah@njghs.net Thanks!

I’ve since been to the Old Bermuda Inn, interviewed employees, taken pics, thermal scanned, tried to get EVPs and video taped. Granted it was broad daylight, but that was the best time as the restaurant was not open for dining so I didn’t have to contend with patrons in the way. There is something of a haunted energy or feel to the original structure & my son’s camera incurred an odd malfunction in one of the rooms upstairs. I’d like to hear from other paranormal investigators as to their results when here.

I had my Sweet 16 at the Old Bermuda Inn, it ended on Halloween night at around 2 in the morning. The owner’s of the Old Bermuda gave me the pamphlet on the history of it. It really is a very sad story. They told me she was lighting the candles that are in the windows, so now at night when they close they leave the candle lit for her. I was freaked out the night of my sweet 16 which now seems like ages ago, but I did not see, hear or feel anything strange. Although one thing happened that to me was kind of frightening. I had a photographer for the party and he drove me crazy, he wanted me to take a picture in front of the fire place. I noticed that it was right below the picture of the woman (if memory serves me correctly I believe her name was Sarah). The wierdest part was when I got my pictures back, I noticed that I was standing in the exact same spot that she was, our dresses were pretty similar and our hair was almost exactly alike, even with the curl in front. That picture still sends chills up my spine.

okay well the old bermuda inn is really haunted. because where it is haunted there are offices so no one is allowed up there. those people that have those offices say that they get the chills. but anyway the real story is ( the story that the worker told me) that the old bermuda inn a long time ago was actually a woman’s home. her husband went off to war and never came back. she waited for him and waited and waited and eventually she either killed herself in the house or died in the house, i dont remember. but anyway they say where she died upstairs is where its very cold and you know that there is someone present. there is the real story from a native staten islander herself.

i forgot to mention that there is actually a portrait in the old bermuda inn of that woman. i saw it and right behind that portrait is the room where she was standing when the artist painted that portrait, so you know it is true.

The Old Bermuda Inn is covered in depth in my upcoming book “Ghosthunting New York City.” It’s due out this Oct. 1. You can follow the series of these America’s Haunted Road Trip books at the link provided. Check it out as a pre-pub purchase at Barnes & Noble web site. bn.com

â??. . . I would stand,
If the night blackened with a coming storm,
Beneath some rock, listening to notes that are
The ghostly language of the ancient earth,
Or make their dim abode in distant winds.
Thence did I drink the visionary power;
And deem not profitless those fleeting moods
Of shadowy exultation: not for this,
That they are kindred to our purer mind
And intellectual life; but that the soul,
Remembering how she felt, but what she felt
Remembering not, retains an obscure sense
Of possible sublimity. . . .

Some years ago,I stopped to look at an old house, now known as the Old Bermuda Inn. The building was about to undergo renovation, but since no one was around I stepped up on to the porch. When I touched the outside window sill I had the distinct impression of an older woman who did not want me there. I left rather quickly. Although I didn’t “see” anything,I haven’t forgotten that very negative impression..

I was told that they had a seance over at The Old Bermuda Inn, and they said it is true. So don’t keep on saying these stories aren’t true. Just last night paranormal people spent the night at Snug Harbor and they even said those spirits are over there. So really now. Even watch the travel channel when the ghost advemtures are on. They are true stories, I even looked up online one of the places they went too and all of it is true.

Hello there! Martha Mersereau is my great great great aunt, and I believe that she is still there! I have been in there to see the painting and there was quite a ruckus while I was there.

The Old Bermuda Inn does not seem haunted, but it has an erie feeling in the dining room that has the steps going upstairs, to the Woman’s living quarters.

As i was in the bathroom BY MYSELF, i heard a little beeping sound. When i was fineshed going to the bathroom i washed my hands i turned the water on, then it turned off. I RAN OUT OF THE BATHROOM SO FAST I ALMOST FELL. THATS MY SOTRY.

Hi readers
I work at the OBI people that say it’s haunted it’s true.
A lady was waiting for her husban at her house and the next day she was still waiting there waiting until she came apron a feeling that made her die so a month later he came home opened the closet to hang his jacket and there she was (locked in the closet) dead he fainted and that’s the true story how it’s haunted

You people have to remember that there are two parts of the old Bermuda inn and it’s the old area that is now a bed and breakfast that is mostly haunted. Which I will say I’ve been there didn’t have an experience of my own but my mother who is a huge skeptic went once with girls from work and the lights shut on and off three times which is not a big deal, but then they heard dinner plates getting thrown into the wall. Needless to say she believes Martha Mesereau is still there.

The power of suggestion is a powerful tool. The building is old which means little holes in the walls and ceiling, this is where the cold and fluttering chills comes from. This is what the dinners are feeling on the back of their necks and arms. Science kills the our creative side but is also puts theories in perspective.
