Real Haunted House

The Queen Mary

Long Beach Harbor, California
By Shannon Reinbold-Gee

Moored in Long Beach Harbor is one of the most haunted ships in the world. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this 1,000 foot long ship’s construction started in 1930, and, being delayed by the Great Depression’s influence, could only take its maiden voyage in 1936. For three glorious years The Queen Mary was the star of the ocean liner industry, hosting people like the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Clark Gable, Greta Garbo, the Gershwins and Sir Winston Churchill—just to name a few. The Queen Mary held the record for the quickest North Atlantic crossing in her hey-day, but with the outbreak of World War II in 1939, her luxury services were set aside and she became known as “The Grey Ghost,” a troop transport.

During the war she participated in almost every important Allied campaign, including the D-Day invasion. It was during this time in her amazing history that tragedy struck. In an attempt to dodge enemy ships, “The Grey Ghost” maneuvered right into one of her smaller companion ships, nearly cutting it in half. Under strict orders, she left the 300 survivors to a watery death. It is said you can still sometimes hear their screams and the pounding of their fists on her fore hull. As the war drew to a close, “The Grey Ghost” took part in the “Bride and Baby Voyages,” carrying more than 20,000 war brides and their babies to the US and Canada. In 1946 alone, The Grey Ghost made 13 voyages of this type.

In 1947 she was refurbished and renewed her job as a luxury liner, running weekly between England and New York. Later she took tourists into the Caribbean, but not being fitted with air-conditioning she was not very popular. In 1967 she was sold to the city of Long Beach, California to be used as a maritime museum and hotel.

Now she is frequently visited by curious tourists. It’s claimed that as many as 150 spirits roam the ship, with the ship herself being the site of nearly 50 deaths over the last 60 years.

The spots where most of the disturbances are located include the engine room, Door 13, the first and second-class pools, the women’s changing room, the first-class lounge, the third-class playroom, the Queen’s Salon and one particular cabin.

In The Queen Mary’s engine room and the boiler room, cameras go dead, batteries get drained and orbs show up in photos. Occasionally cameras simply “give up the ghost” refusing to operate normally until they’ve left the area. In Engine Room 2, people report feeling a sense of dread—perhaps because this was the spot many stowaways believed would be their safe-haven. Instead, when the engines roared to life many were burned. Door #13 in the belly of the boat has crushed two men to death, one a young seaman who lied about his age to get the job he so desperately wanted. People report seeing him, dressed in blue coveralls, hurrying down “Shaft Alley” towards the door before he disappears.

The old swimming pools are also the sites of frequent sightings. Visitors have reported women in wearing swimsuits from the 1930s walking the pool decks. Others have heard splashing or spotted fresh wet footprints. Near one of the pools people have even seen a little girl, sometimes clutching a teddy bear, and at other times calling for her mommy and dolly. Is this the ghost of the little girl, named Jackie, who drowned while the Queen Mary played ocean liner? Or is it the little girl—supposedly quite precocious and a child who enjoyed sliding down banisters—who went for a slide and got bucked off when the ship hit a huge swell, the child’s neck snapping as a result of sudden impact? Perhaps the two have even found each other and play together, as many report hearing childish laughter.

In the third-class children’s playroom a baby’s cries are sometimes heard. Those who know the ship best think it is the sound of the little boy who died there, shortly after his birth. Other ghosts occasionally are spotted in the playroom, too—perhaps parents picking their children up from what was essentially daycare, or maybe the caretakers themselves linger, watching for the children still aboard.

A strange vortex phenomenon has also been reported near the women’s changing room, supposedly the resulting negative force because of a woman being raped nearby.

In some first-class staterooms, a man wearing a 1930’s style suit has been seen and phones are known to ring without anyone on the other end. Faucets also turn on in the middle of the night as if someone is washing up after a late night enjoying themselves.

A beautiful young woman in a stylish evening gown can sometimes be spotted in the Queen’s Salon. Some claim she dances alone in a shadowy corner of the room.

But beyond the tragic deaths of children and military men, perhaps the darkest thing still clinging to the Queen Mary is the remnants of one mysterious man’s deeds. Once, a single male passenger checked in, and stowing his luggage, gave a steward some cash to see if he could find a willing female companion to share his cabin for the night. The steward was successful and dropped a woman off for the man. The pair retired for the evening. The next morning, when the steward realized his patron was not at breakfast, he went to see how things had gone. He knocked on the cabin door, but got no answer. Worried, he raced away to find his superior—a man who could open the door. When the door opened they were horrified to find the corpse of the willing woman, her blood spread round the room. They searched for the only suspect—the male passenger—but found no sign of him—no registration information, no luggage… There had not even been a passenger assigned to that cabin. To this day, the man’s identity and method of escape baffles everyone who hears the chilling tale of what happened when two people met for a sudden tryst.

I don’t believe the queen mary is really haunted, I am a believer but also a skeptic, and I have been to the queen mary many times. Things seem to be normal, and I haven’t had one experience here unlike other places I’ve known to be haunted, I think it’s just hysteria.

I don’t think the queen Mary is haunted. And for the comment above mine. On the ghost hunters episode nothing paranormal happened at the queen mary. Not only did nothing happen someone tried to mess with there cameras so you would think a blanket moved by stopping there cameras most likely because the queeny mary get a lot of business with the legend that its haunted and they knew damn well they weren’t going to catch anything because its not. I don’t think that just because a t.v. show finds something or doesn’t should be your basis for believing if a place is haunted or not. Come on its t.v.. I’ve been to the queen mary many of times and I’ve never had anything at all ever happen. I’ve never known anyone else who has personally had something happen. Its just one of those places that has a story for who knows why. The queen mary isn’t haunted!

I went with my church youth group to Long Beach in 1987. And some of us had a choice to take a tour of Queen Mary. I opted not to. I felt uneasy standing outside the ship. I didn’t know the ship was haunted until 20 years later when I saw a show about haunted places on t.v. Now I know why I got that uneasy feeling. The ship was haunted.

I have been on the Queen Mary in Januray of 2008 and experience a horrible feeling while in the Women’s restroom on the floor where you register for a room. I walked to the back of the ship and as I stepped into the restroom I had a threatening feeling. It was so bad that I had to rush out of there. It wanted to hurt me and wanted me off the ship.
I bound it and commanded it to stay away in the name of Jesus Christ.
This ship needs deliverance.

My testicles tingle when I go to haunted places. This is how I know they’re truly haunted.

When I was about 7 years old, my grandparents were visiting us from the East Coast. My Dad thought it would be a fun day to go to the Queen Mary. While we were in the engine room, my Dad had my little brother who was 2 in his arms. I was overcome with extreme fear and dread, grabbed my brother from my Dad and ran as fast as I could to daylight. It is the same fear and dread I get whenever I am in a bad place.

Kimmiepooh says:

October 22, 2008, 2:12 pm

Oh my gosh…Michael Bye is hilarious! Slept at the Queen Mary a few years ago. Walking down the halls, I felt the hall was stretching. Perhaps my eyes were playing tricks on me. The room that I slept in was quite small. In the middle of the night, I heard voices in the room coming from the intercom above the bed but of course, one of the staff members could be playing tricks on that. I’ve heard stories about it but a bit reluctant to try going to the marked places myself. Perhaps one day, I’ll build the courage and go there again but with a bottle of Holy water just to be safe. =)

Minister Helena Garilano says:

Hello,
Never use Holy Water when fighting spriits. Use the name of Jesus Christ. I bind and command you to leave in the Name of Jesus Christ. You must be a believer to do this , if not you can become one.

i think there is somethin wrong with the queen mary cause ive been to it and slept in it and have been woken up by someone shakin me many times in the night…..(still have no answer to the cause).except for the boiler room its not haunted its just a feelin you get cause its big and dark your mind tricks you!

Minister Helena Garilano says:

January 24, 2009, 2:30 am

Uneasy feeling,
I know the feeling….It was a spirit that woke you up and as for the boiler room …you mind doesn’t play tricks on you , it you get a feeling it’s because the spirits are giving it to you……I got a feeling as I walked down the long hallway to the restroom and it because very strong when I went into the bathroom….real bad feeling….I also went on the upper deck to buy coffee and got a dismal feeling.
There is a lot of demonic spirits, that’s where the bad feelings come from because they are so evil.

THAN I GOT SCARRED AND TOOK OF RUNNING THAN I RAN PAST A WOMEN THAT WAS HAVING TROUBLE BREATHING, EXACTLY WHERE SHE WAS STANDING IS WHERE A WOMEN HAD DIED. I WENT TO THE FRONT DESK THEY SHOWED ME A PICTURE OF THE WOMEN I SEEN FLOATING AT THE END OF THE LONG HALLWAY. and thats all the truth beleive it or not but that ship is really HAUNTED!!!

Helena Garilano says:

If that ever happens again anywhere say I bind you and command you to leave me alone in the Name of Jesus Christ. It Works !

Sorry about all the mistakes in my comment on 1/24/09…It’s odd though because when I typed the comment it didn’t have mistakes. Ever since I got involved in the Deliverance Ministry strange things happen to me all the time. What I wanted to say is that the Queen Mary is full of demonic spirits . You can tell because they put fear in you and give you bad feelings.

I believe that it is not haunted. the Jonas Brothers went there to film their video S.O.S and they would not go there if it was because they are Christians and they do not like spirits and ghost and would not mess with spirits and ghosts like that.

I used to live at LA area, and in my old elementary school every year we would go to Catalina Island for a 3-day science trip. The only to go was to board a ship to Catalina Island in Long Beach Harbor just right next to the Queen Mary exhibit thing. Every time I went to the harbor for my field trip, the Queen Mary would always be seen across the harbor because it was so close. And come to think of it, I think every time I looked at it I felt some sort of dread, can’t explain it, in fact, I just thought about it now. I’ve never went onto it, and I never will.

The qreen mary is hanted! I don’t care what other people say i have been
to the qreen mary lots of times first time i went there i didn’t get any
thing but if the qreen mary really is hanted then i’m going to keep trying
till i find out if it’s hanted or not. The last time i went there i went to
the pool room cuz i never went there before. When i walked in i saw the
ghost of jackie who died there. She waved at me i waved back she was so sad
what i read on the computer is that shed liked to play with dolls so i
walked up to her and gave her a doll now she was so happy. My goul in life
is to help jackie find her mom and her other doll so she can go to heven
this is the reason i am a
ghost hunter.

Went to the ship for ghost fest 2006. we had a digital recorder and when we went to 1st class pool area a guy in our group was asking questions to the little girl Jackie. He was asking things like come out and play and we won’t hurt you, and one time when he asked her to come out and play….we didn’t here anything at the time but when we played back the recorder later we could hear a kind of sad voice of a little kid say “I can’t” and made me a believer but it bothered me that the voice was sad sounding.

Well, honestly saying I got a little bit scared going through the last part of the article published about Queen Mary. The lady was raped coz she was in blood and flesh (alive) till that time when the steward lead her to that man’s room. So, M thinkin who might be the man and how did he went missing? Wasnt he properly checked before boarding the “Ship”? Then why on earth his Identity went missing?

Queen Mary IS haunted. Just recently I saw a show call THE OTHER SIDERS. They stayed over at Queen Mary and may I tell you……….It scared the heck out of them. So believe me or not but, Queen Mary is haunted. Just because it seems like no one is there…….. doesn’t mean that it’s true.

I beleive the ship is haunted. I went there on a school trip back in 1978 and I heard kids playing in the pool. when my and another girl went to see who it was there was nothing there…not even water in the pool and we had heard kid’s splashing and everything. Then when we tried to find the rest of our group a really pale lady in an old fashioned dress asked us why we were there. She took us back to our group who had gone on to another part of the ship. We did not realize we had been separated for quite some time. It was really spooky.

I’ve been aboard the Queen Mary, and I do believe that she is haunted. I definitely felt presences in the forward hull when I could concentrate, but I couldn’t sense anything in the engine room because there was too much distraction. There was something in the pool area, I’m certain. I could feel the energy when my had touched the wall and I pulled my hand away like I’d just been burned. My brother put his hand to the wall, but felt nothing strange. The Queen Mary is definitely haunted, although I don’t think she’s haunted by as many spirits as are rumored to wander her halls.

Bob Davis says:

She is haunted we have been investigating her for years and have many recording of EVP’s and lot’s of audible voices as well. You can hear Jackie the little girl and more at our site. http://www.parainvestigations.com/evidence.html
Give a listen and you be the judge.

I have had many experiences at the Queen Mary although I was only there for 2 nights. When in the bathroom at the Promenade deck i heard a woman shuffling through her purse, but when i opened the stall there was no one there (note- this was at about 6:00 in the morning, there werent people outside the bathroom really) and another situation was where I heard a scream from the elevator (the not working one). I do beleive the ship is haunted.
