Real Haunted Houses

Real Haunted House

The University of Alabama

Tuscaloosa, Alabama
By Robin Wright

Violence. Death. Destruction. When you walk onto the campus of the University of Alabama, you are walking into a place where gunfights, riots, and war have left a number of phantoms behind to haunt the hallways and grounds of the U of A.

The U of A opened its doors to the public in 1831, having about 100 students. Since its inception, the university had disciplinary problems, with gunfights on the grounds not being all that uncommon. After 29 years of trouble, the school was transformed into a military academy, and just in time to train soldiers for the Civil War. Some say that in April of 1865, a Union soldier came onto campus to sign a treaty. When he entered the cadet guardhouse, now known as Jason’s Shrine or as The Little Round House, he was beaten, tortured and murdered. Another version of the story is that when Union troops were marching to the university–specifically to burn it down–two confederate soldiers stayed behind to kill a few Yankees. When three Federal soldiers asked one of the young cadets where to find some whiskey, he told them to go into the small structure. Lying in wait was the second southern cadet who shot the three soldiers when they entered the building. If you put your ear up to the door, you can sometimes hear soldiers prowling for whiskey. On a foggy night, some say the spirits of soldiers can be seen marching through the quad to an unknown spectral destination.

Smith Hall has also had some spooky incidents reported from within. Some say that they have heard Dr. Smith’s carriage, which is exhibited on the main floor, careen through the building, the sound of wheels and horses coming out of nowhere. Footsteps also have been heard entering the upstairs classrooms and the sounds of a ghostly lecture coming from a classroom at night. One night, a few students tried to catch what they thought was an intruder in the building. They followed the voices to a classroom, and when they entered the room, the once lined-up rows of desks were scattered. They later discovered that a boiler explosion had killed a number of students who were in the room years before. In the basement, students have complained of feeling watched while working in the lab. An assistant was pushed into a closet one night and locked in. When he tried to open the closet door, it would not release him until morning. From then on, he ignored any out of the ordinary sounds, all interest in investigation had been sucked out of him.

The most common complaint students have is microwaves starting, stopping and making strange noises, even when the microwave is unplugged. Photos are developed showing light orbs floating through them, and footsteps are heard at night. Some say that a girl committed suicide by lighting herself on fire on the 13th floor of Tutwiler Hall. Shadowy forms of people have been spotted speeding through the halls.

Gorgas Library still entertains the ghost of its namesake, Amelia Gayle Gorgas and the Music Library is haunted by a man in black who wanders the stacks, sometimes touching people looking through materials. Hoole Special Collections Library has an elevator that will still occasionally drop off ghostly riders when the power has been turned off.

Even Tennessee Williams has a part of the hauntings at the University. Marian Gallaway, the theater director during the mid-twentieth century, has been sighted in white on the stage in her theater in Rowand-Johnson Hall. Marian’s husband had left her to pursue a romance with Tennessee Williams, and Williams supposedly used Marian as the inspiration for Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire.

The students of the University of Alabama have a lot more “school spirit” than they may have bargained for.

I am currently a student at the University. I live in a new dorm, but I have classes in Rowand Johnson and I have gone to the library on several occasions. As far as I know no one is even allowed to enter the little round house, it has windows on all sides so that one can easily see into it, and it is used as a little museum. As for a secret society that only allows twenty people, I think that is bullshit. Leigh seemed very well informed on the buildings and history, and I have never been to Smith Hall so I don’t know about that, but I have never experienced any peculiar occurences here.

I just got back from a summer camp at UA this week. I stayed in the dorms at Julia Tutwiler, my roommate and myself experienced several odd occurences. Our microwave would beep and ding, even after we unplugged it. My closet door, would come open by itself; even after I made sure it was secure before I would lay down for bed. Also at night my roommate and I heard soft foot steps outside of our door, with my roommate hearing whispers of her name being called all through the night. When we would get up to open the door to see if anyone was there (the hallways would be completely silent and empty). The final straw that had me a believer was at night the lights were very dim, and I looked back towards the full length mirror that is attached to both doors, and I clearly saw a black figure run past. **** If anyone else has experienced the same or something like this, from staying at this dorm please let me know; by posting any comments or knowledge you may have about what may have occured at Tutwiler…….Thanks

I just wanted to add some additional information related to Leigh’s post. I was born in Tuscaloosa and my father taught speech and theatre in the 60’s at the university. Our family knew both Marian Gallaway and Allen Bales; I remember them both well. I was not aware of the hauntings in the theaters and found that information fascinating! However, I would like to correct the rumor about Marian and Tennessee Williams – Marian knew Tennessee, but she never had a relationship with him. The relationship that Tennessee had was with Marian’s husband, and he left Marian to be with Tennessee. My parents told me about this when I was older and more mature to understand the implication of what they were telling me. My parents also told me that Dad on numerous occasions heard that the character of Blanche DuBois in “A Streetcar Named Desire” was a veiled portrayal of Marian. My dad did see someone work up the nerve to ask Marion about this; she just gave a half-smile and said, “Ask Tennessee.” Years later, my parents saw a production of “Streetcar” at the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre and were astounded to see the actress playing Blanche become Marian Gallaway! After the play ended, they went backstage and spoke with the actress to ask her how she prepared for the role. She indicated that not much preparation was needed – Tennessee had provided everything in the script to develop her character. Their conclusion was that the rumors were indeed fact.

The idea that Marian’s spirit would still be felt and seen in the theater doesn’t surpriae me at all. That would be in keeping with her character, as I remember her.

could this possibly be the presidents mansion the website is speaking of? the civil war was not the only possible explanation of these hauntings, the university is also very close to known indian burial grounds, as well as the home of several slave cemetaries.-just a thought. i have spent alot of time on the ua campus, and while i have no specific stories i can say that i have experienced the “willies” on more than one occasion.
tks, a

Barb, do you know where Marian Gallaway is buried? I know she is originally from Savannah. I was an acting student at UofA – graduated in 1963. Marian was quite a character, and had a brilliant mind. She also tended to intimidate raw students, but at her core she was passionate about the theatre, which rubbed off on all of us. The last time I had contact with her was when I began my acting career at Hartford Stage Co. and wrote to her telling her of my first professional job; she wrote back a very nice letter of encouragement and congratulations. I wish I could call her up and talk to her today. I miss her.

rooooolll tide, what building exactly is this supposed to have taken place in? I mean there’s only 200 buildings on our campus

BamaGirl says:

January 1, 2009, 7:05 pm

The “building” everyone is talking about is located towards the back of the quad near the library with the big stairs. A lot of people do not know names but they know what the buildings are and where they are. Me and a friend are talking about going tonight to see if we hear anything. As the 13 floors go I do not know which one it is but it no longer has 13 floors. Also the do a tour on Halloween night so if you are interested in knowing the background and wanting to see if you can see anything or hear anything…then go! I have been on the quad numerous of times and never have felt seen or heard anything. I also have lived in Tuscaloosa my whole like. Bryce Hospital is a pretty creepy place…it still has the electric chair in the basement and shackles all over the floor unless people have stolen them. I have never seen anything paranormal so I can’t say I believe but I find it very interesting, As far as the whole Auburn thing goes and Alabama football goes…..WE KICKED SOME *** THIS YEAR!!! ROLL TIDE
