The White Lady

07.23.2005 | 7:48 am | Connecticut, Monroe, United States

The “White Lady,” as she is often called, is most commonly seen standing in the road. She is often hit by oncoming cars, but much to the drivers’ surprise, their cars never receive damage. There are numerous other reports of demons and other ghosts in the cemetery.

  2. There is a similar story at my old day camp. It was a long time ago but i still remember it b/c me and a few friends went and looked in the woods for the lady also called the white lady. The legend was that if you stood where her cabin used to be she would come and circle you trying to push you away. I got too scared and left but as two of my friends said it was true.

  3. Oh Good Lord! Are people even the least bit literate? I am so disheartened by some of this ****. Anyway, I have been to union, I never saw the white lady or anything strange but, it was day light when I went. I have also visited Fairfield Hills on a few occassions now and there are some areas of the ground that feel free heavy. I don’t know how else to explain it except there is a definate change in the air around you. It feels very dense and heavy. The buildings themselves are so boarded up and guarded that it would be nearly impossible to get inside.
Just my experinces, nothing to exiciting but, then again - I don’t believe in making s**t up.

  4. Hey! We have a story like that here in England. The place is called Blue Bell Hill. A youngs girl was knocked over and killed on the road many years ago. Now she appers in front of drivers, who then think that they have hit someone, so they get out and look. Obviuosly there is nothing there. There are reports of her actually sitting in your car and a friend of mine when she drove over the hill said she saw the girls reflection in her rear view mirror. Most sightings happen arround 1am, i think that was the time she was killed. I have never experienced it but i know people who have. i try to avoid the road at all costs, its scary when it’s dark and your on your own!

  9. O Man!, I went to Monroe once to visit some relatives and decided to visit this ”White Lady”. I thought this was gonna be some kind of joke, but boy was I in for a surprise! I visited at about midnight for maximum ”effect”,but I’m still regretting doing that. I took the road there and had to swerve to miss the lady and ended up skidding off the road. I was so freakin scared and I’m a 28-year old man! When I got back into the car after having checked for damage, a freaky-looking glowing thing was hovering about 2 yards from the passenger side of my car. Man, I got out of that place going 70 miles an hour. I’m not playing either, that place is full bad medicine.

  10. I’ve been to union cemetary a bunch of times and its a buch of ********. Fairfield Hill’s is a different case. I went there with like 5 of my friends (we had security break us into one of the buildings). We got in and it was very dark. We noticed an underground passageway so we started to walk down it. We got about half way and the kid in front got freaked out and told us to stay quite. Just at that time we heard all of the doors on the floor above us slam shut, so we panicked and left (i only left because i was scared of the car i was driving getting towed). I really want to go back, but i heard that the security guards are a bunch of old guys that won’t even let you drive around the area. I also heard that the buildings are going to be knocked down to build some condos.

  12. Just thought I would add my two cents for what it’s worth. I can assure you Fairfield Hills Hospital is NOT haunted. The whole story is contrived.
My husband worked at Fairfield Hills for twenty years as a police officer (yes they did have police officers and not security guards work there, back then) When he worked nights, a part of his nightly routine was to patrol the underground tunnels, because every once in a while a patient would get into the tunnels. When we saw that MTV show on t.v. that featured a bunch of kids in the tunnels freaking out, he laughed hysterically. He said that in all those years he never experienced any type of ghostly experience in the tunnels or anywhere else in the buildings or the grounds. So, I dont want to burst anyones bubbles or anything, but I just want you to know the story is made up. These stories seem to circulate around just about every single closed down mental hospital all over the place.

  24. A police car frequently sits at night on the road by the church across from the Union cemetary. It’s a good spot that allows him to watch the intersection of the two roads and keep curiosity seekers out of the cemetary all at the same time. I’ve been in the cemetary by day and have driven past it at all hours of the night, the only strange things I’ve seen are the people who have to go poking around in there when the police arent around.
The whole of the cemetary is visible from two major roads as well as the church road which connects the two. Thousands of cars must go by there every day without incident.
As for Fairfield Hills…there are alot of buildings in there and a couple of them have even been used on occasion until recently for community events like book sales and such. If you search around the net you’ll find lotsd of pictures of these places taken by “urban explorers” …pretty interesting! I can’t help but notice none of them ever mention anything eerie or paranormal though.
I’ve always wanted to try an experiment and randomly pick a place (say…the cemetary along rt 7 in Wilton..or how ’bout an empty warehouse in Waterbury?) ) and post a bogus story about it and see how many people add “me too!” stories and how long it takles before the place becomes yet another attractive nuisance….

But I have a video that’s even better. John Zaffis and his team were pretty impressed with it. As soon as I can get it online, I’ll be happy to share it. 28. There is also a tale, about a white lady, near my area of CT, Pachaug. Theres a small island, about 500 yards from shore, and if you set foot on there, at about 12:17 am, you may see her, just wandering around. Notably, trying to pick apples from oak trees. and another small island near there, you can hear the yelling and cries for help from some Native Americans

  31. The “White Lady,” as she is known, is a real entity that is sighted at/around Union Cemetary in Easton, CT. In their seminars the Warrens show a very detailed picture of her which Ed Warren (now deceased) supposedly took himself. (I haven’t seen this picture but a couple of my friends who’ve been to their seminars have.) The reactions from the people are like “Wow!” and “She’s pretty.” However, it wasn’t pretty for a lot of people who’ve had incidents around Union. In one instance, an ambulance was making its way along the road by Union when they ‘ran over’ the White Lady apparition standing in the road. She passed through the vehicle. When they went outside to check, she was gone. Other reported instances include people seeing her being chased by dark shadows which nip and grab at her heels while she runs away. I’d love to see her firsthand. The apparition seems harmless enough; she hasn’t physically harmed anyone. Malicious entities are usually those associated with the demonic and are typically “attached” to families, especially those with strong faith in God. The spirit of a deceased person, e.g. the White Lady, normally wouldn’t be harmful, although in some cases they are mischevous and/or scary (intentionally, probably to try and remove the presence of living people from what they perceive as their property).

  32. So, I’ve read through this thread and I have a number of things to comment on.

First of all, I think a lot of you are confusing The White Lady in Easton with Hanna Cranna in Monroe. She’s buried in the Stepney Cemetary and often appears in the middle of the road, causing drivers to swerve in order to avoid her. Ultimately, they always run off the road into the same tombstone; hers. It’s well documented that the town of Monroe replaces her tombstone almost annually.

As for Fairfield Hills, it is indeed haunted. For the woman who said her husband partolled there for years, it is indeed possible that he never detected any sort of paranormal activity. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t any.

The fact remains that many people died — and died a horrible death to boot — on the property. While some may have found rest there, many were left with unfinished business…. and possibly, a sense of hatred and distain for those who caused them to suffer in their last years at Fairfield Hills.

My grandmother was a nurse. When she was a student, they spent months at Fairfield Hills…. and she actually has a diary she kept on the experience. She said the mental anguish amongst the patients was excurciating. Not to mention the screams in the middle of the night, the unnecessary labotomies and the sometimes horrifying and very lax care of said patients.

Wouldn’t YOU want some sort of closure, or revenge, if it had been you?

Personally, I’ve been to the campus. The first time I was there, I had no idea it used to be a state hospital. I legitimately knew NOTHING about the property or the history of it…. but I knew when we drove onto the property I shouldn’t be there. I’ve been told I’m a sensitive. It’s difficult to explain, but when Im in a place with a lot of paranormal activity I get very tense, very uneasy and the overwhelming feeling that I should leave. That I don’t belong there. This was exactly the case with Fairfield Hills. My aunt insisted I was being silly (still, telling me nothing about the property) and we all went through the walking trails around the back of the property. The further onto the property we got, the less I wanted to be there, the more I felt like there was someone behind me, looking over my shoulder…. until I felt as if they were sitting right on top of me.

You can call me crazy, you can call me anything you want…. but I know what was there. There are people who are totally and utterly immune to anything like this. But for those of you who’ve been in my shoes at any point and time, well, I know you understand what Im talking about.

  34. I live in Monroe and trust me I have heard all the stories of the white lady the road that leads from Fairfield to Easton Monroe line is also called hitchhikers highway if you travel down that road you will see shadow figures of people but when you get close they disappear. Me and my friend drove down the road and got consumed by a white mist and had cold chills even though there was no physical feature it was the white lady. Also the world famous Warrens are from Monroe who have been to Amityville and other haunting and have artifacts at there house. The Fairfield Hills mental institution is the most haunted place they filmed MTV fear there. They never released it to air nor did they finish out the night because the place is so scary. My brother went in there with his friends and went to a padded room and had a picture of daffy duck drawn on the wall with blood. The complex goes 8 stories underground and has tunnels that connect to all the buildings. There have been sightings of a light being on in a room when the electricity has been shut down to the buildings and also a figure appears in the window. The place is now owned by the state not the town of Newton and they have guards there 24/7 and State police do patrols of the complex. I kid you not these stories are true if you do not believe me then go to those locations your self and find out.

  35. I forgot to mention that my mom was a nursing student when fairfield hills was open and she told me the place is def. haunted because so many people died in the place and also of the many stories of experiments to find out what happened to that patient that caused them to act that way.

Hannah Cranna is also a ghost in monroe but she was the woman who everyone in monroe thought was a witch and she was the one who said that she would put herself into her own grave. Which did happen when the people carrying her body slipped on ice and her coffin fell into the grave

It was so intense I wanted to throw-up. The next day I drove around the institution and also saw some lights blinking on one of the buildings… strange? I thought they closed the place down in 95? 53. A few weeks ago, I went to Union Cemetey in Easton, CT. I was there between the hours of 12:00 and 2:00 am. And while I’m a believer, I did not experience anything out of the ordinary that night. In face, the scariest part of the evening was when the police came and my friends and I had to hide behind the grave stones. I did feel unease as I was there, but who knows if that was the paranormal, or my own fear getting at me. My friend who also came who is a paranormal photographer, went to the cemetery on other occasions and said that it had been a completely different experience, where he had acutally felt and seen stuff. After the pictures were developed, we did get many orbs and a couple of red mists, but nothing that would warrant any real evidence of the paranormal.

    Comment by Kate | 09.9.2007 | 9:40 am

  54. Fairfield Hills is definetly haunted. And I have pictures inside to prove it. Working on getting them on the internet. My nephew and a few friends went up there a few weeks ago, ended up getting escorted out by the cops for trespassing. But prior to that escort they took quite a few pictures, and he showed me one he took with his cell phone and he didn’t tell me what to look for he told me to tell him what I see, and in the corner of the room there was a person hung. It was very, very noticable, his friend took alot of digital pictures which I havent seen yet but they will be viewed online very shortly. So for all the people who haven’t been there and don’t believe you will definetly changed your mind when you see these pictures, something happened in that place and the spirits are very unhappy. Please stay out of there, just leave them all alone. I know there is talk about that place being knocked down and condo’s going up, I know I wouldn’t want my house on those grounds.

  57. Faifield Hills, though a thrill to beak in to, is NOT haunted. The building in which we entered was boarded up, broken, and seeing it was at night, shadows were bind cast by chicken wired screen windows. It is a scary place to be, and feels terrifying because of the atmosphere and because anyone with even the slightest imagination is almost going to TRY and see the ghosts of mental patients. Union Cemetary on the other hand is a legitimate phenmenom. Ed and Lorraine Warren, whom my friends family know personally, and who were the original investigators in the Amityville case, confirmed this. YES, there are cops and YES, Monroe cops are…….lets say passionate about their work. So expect to pay a hefty fine. But it may just in fact be worth it.

I thought it was just a place where a family or a group of families lived that had the genetic condition that causes dwarfism. He didn’t seem to have any info. about it. It was up behind a store called B.B. Dales. Do you know anything about it?

We both saw her coming from inside the cemetary. She seemed to be above the ground. Scared the **** out of us. I don’t think he ever started the bike faster than he did that night. No one was a bigger skeptic than me. Just writing this I’m covered from head to toe with chills. I haven’t seen anything like that since, but I definitely saw her. No question, she exists.

  63. Hey, I just moved to Monroe from Trumbull. I live less than five minutes from Union Cemetery (it is in Monroe by the way). I don’t know what I believe about it, but unless you’re really into thrills I would avoid it. Monroe cops are notoriously tough ********. They take pride in their position of “power” and love to give tickets.
Fairfield Hills, on the other hand, I have never been to but no matter where you live in Connecticut, everyone has heard the stories. Someone mentioned the difference between good and evil spirits before. Fairfield Hill has BAD spirits. I mean, tortured, insane, lost, tormented souls. Be careful. This is not something to meddle in.
Anyone heard of Dudleytown in Cornwall, CT. It is an abandoned village that is haunted. Same heavey, get out of there, feeling as Fairfield Hills except its an entire forest. Careful though, security around sometimes.

  64. I myself do believe in ghost. I have heard stories regarding the white lady and Hanna Cranna. I myself have so badly wanted to go and see for myself. But with my luck she (the white lady)will not be visible for me to see. I haven’t been to Fairfield Hills in years. Last time I was there was when I was just a kid, I went with my mom to see my stepfather but they wouldn’t allow me to go in the room. I myself did not know that this place is haunted, till about a year ago.

  65. Fairfield Hills is my favorite place to go. I have pictures of my son and faces were looking out the windows. Ghost Hunters should go here they would be scared out of their minds. This place is haunted.

  66. I lived in a house on Barn Hill in Monroe, Ct. when I was very young. I grew up hearing stories about how our dog, a german shepherd named Cito, was apparently held to the floor by an unseen force; how a hammer flew down the stairs while my mom was hanging wallpaper in the stairwell; and how the Warren’s, I guess they are well-known experts in the field, told my parents that they would not help my family because the house had an evil presence that would not leave and that we needed to leave before something truly terrible happened. I honestly had never heard anyone else, besides my mom, ever mention the Warren’s until I got on this site tonight.
Anyway, sounds like Monroe has quite a few hauntings… All over Connecticut, really. I have lots of crazy stories from New Milford, New Preston… all first-hand accounts that I have had. The only truly first-hand account I have from the house my folks called “Barn Hill” (as they had called their place Barn Hill Farm) was when I returned there, unbeknownst to me, 13 years later. We were out horse hunting, and there was an equestrian center in Monroe that we went to. Mom sent me up to the house to tell the owners we were there to see a horse. I knocked on the door, a woman answered, and I couldn’t speak (very unusual, as I am an extremely chatty person, especially as a child!), and I felt an extreme heaviness surrounding me, an oppressive feeling coming over me. It was the most frightening feeling I have ever experienced. When I ran back to the car I remember asking my mom why she had brought me to Barn Hill. I had not even realized it was the house until that door opened and I felt an incredible hatred, like the house itself hated me and wanted to destroy me. My mom asked me how I knew it was our old house; all I could say then, and can say still, was that it was if the house had told me. I know it sounds crazy, but to those folks who do not believe, who think I am making this all up… I don’t care. There are some unexplainable things that happen. Spirits walk among us. Some of us are “blessed” to be more sensitive to this kind of experience. The rest… well, I think you are pretty fortunate, too.

  67. To the poster about Dudleytown… I remember my mom telling us all about it. My brother went, but he told me not to go because I am really sensitive to such things. I heard it was an evil place. I steered clear.

  68. Hey guys! Do you know that there is also a place in Easton Connecticut a cemetary off of exit 46 southbound on the Merrit Parkway. This story is so famous that it even aired on a mystery show called Sightings you probably heard of it. Anyway its of a lady in white that appears on the side of the road next to the cemetary as cars drive by. Some think she might be R.I.P. in the cemetary. Check it out and let me know of your experience. Peace!!!!!!

  69. I’ve been to the Union Cemetary in Monroe many times. The first time was in daylight but only so we can see what we were getting ourselves into that night. Later that night I ended up going with 3 cars full of people so I didn’t think anything would happen but when we first pulled onto that street off the main road we parked the cars right there. We started walking towards the main entrance and you could see this statue but it was sort of glowing and turning with us. Everyone ended up being scared and we got back into our cars and as we drove by the cemetary you can still see the figure following us with her body. It was strange. We drove down the road to that CVS parking lot and decided to go back. This time when we got to the front of the gate I saw this lady in white pick her head up and I could tell she had a bonnet on and it seemed like she was coming towards us. Everyone ended up running and screaming so it disappeared. Every other time I drove up there nothing happened again.

I been to Fairfield Hills also but they already had everything boarded up and the guards patrolling. I have a friend who has gone through the underground tunnel with a group of people. Supposely while he was down there they kept hearing noises, so of course he’s going to look back. The second time he heard the noise and looked back there was a lit cigerette on the floor, yet nobody in his group smoked.

Another good one to go to if you are into this stuff would be Green Lady in Burlington, CT. It’s pretty intense.

  70. I really like this site, save for the jack a$$es that pretend they saw something and make stuff up, and non believers that will go somewhere allegedly and say that they didn’t see anything and its a load of bull butter.

First off, going one, ten, or ten thousand times to an alleged haunted place and seeing nothing doesn’t necessarily mean a place isn’t haunted. If proper studies were to be made, I would bet that some people just don’t have the ability to see, or detect ghosts or paranormal activity. I feel that some people have the ability to see, others can ‘feel’ their presence, while some say that they can communicate with the deceased.

I used to live in East Hartford CT (now in Richmond VA) and was attacked in my room once, I had these shadows of things swirling around my ceiling, was grabbed (I couldn’t see anything but felt hands all over my body) and had several occurrences involving the paranormal, most of them when I was the only person in the house.

That being said, to comment on Jennifer’s note, I too have heard of the green lady, when I lived in CT I was told of her, and that she was apparently an apparition that came to in the form of like a witch on a broom at a cemetary. I didn’t believe the witch part….

There are plenty of haunted places in Connecticut. I knew of a park in East Hartford, I can’t remember the name of it, but I am 99% sure it was right off Burnside Avenue, across from a KFC, I remember the road to have some SERIOUSLY sharp turns right there. There is an old school house in the front of a park, there’s a few baseball fields there, for I played 13 yr old league ball there, and rumors say that there is a woman that walks around in the place at night. I drove by one night and saw a light that looked as if it was moving around, as if someone had a flashlight and was in the building. But it has been closed off to the public ever since I can recall…

I was just in Colonial Williamsburg, VA, and got some eerie photos on a digital camera. Most photos were clear and had nothing in them, however 3 had several orbs flying around, and they just happened to be the places that had the most paranormal activity per our guide. If anyone is ever in the area, you should go take a tour, just find the Williamsburg Visitor’s center and ask about the Colonial Williamsburg ghost walks, I think they’re 12 bucks for a tour, and its pretty cool. Even if you see nothing, the stories will give you goosebumps!

You also have several stories about the White Lady, and I also love the tale of Dudleytown. Its hard to study Dudleytown because of moronic people that almost burned down the entire forest. So people, let’s cut the nonsense and leave this site to those who have truthful experiences, and a note/suggestion for both believers and non-believers: Don’t be scared to believe in the unbelievable, however do not automatically conclude that something is paranormal because you have no explanation for it! Happy hunting everyone!

  72. I myself have been to Union a few times, Ive never seen anything. Ive taken pictures, a tape recorder, nothing! I have to go back there sometime in the next few months, I’m not sure if anyone else has seen this but in the spring time there is one single tombstone which has little purple wild flowers growing all around it, its very pretty and eerie seeing as how its the only one. Ive felt things there during the day, really odd loud creaking noises, I felt “drawn” to one particular tombstone of a 17 year old girl. But the main reason why I’m writing, does anyone live in the fairfield or Redding area? I found a very old, very hidden cemetary in Redding, The Hopewell burying ground, by far that has to be the scariest place I have ever been, I’ve heard loud banging noises, horses walking and what I can only describe as surround sound growling, I found info on it years ago but I can’t find it anywhere now! And as for Fairfield, Lake Mohegan, the cascades, the house on top of the hill, Ive been inside and experienced some very very strange things, the only thing I have witnessed with my eyes was a candle flame going horizontal and burning blue. Ive gone with groups of people some claimed to have been pushed, other says they have seen things, hair pulling ect. The only thing i feel is an extreme temperature drop when you get about 50 feet of it. Other people claim absolutely nothing has happened there, and its just an old abandon house… I cannot find any information on the house, at least any real, solid true information, like newspaper articles. People say alot of occult and satanic things happened, I actually went there today and took some pictures, regaurdless of whether or not the stories are true, there is definetely something eerie about that place and I’m very curious to find out what it is! any info would be greatly welcome!

  73. Union Cemetery was pretty creepy. I was there a few years ago…took some pictures and stuff. I felt it was worth the experience even though I didn’t see this “White Lady”. There were a few things on our pictures, and I’m not talking about those ever popular “orbs”. There were mists and strange red lines coming from the tree in the middle of the cemetery. But I didn’t see any apparitions.
As far as Dudley Town goes - I’ve lived here in Kent for about…10+ years. I’m about a 2 minutes drive from one of the entrances to Dudley Town, and naturally when I was in high school we ventured up there. I will admit it was quite the experience. When you throw a rock into woods and something throws one back to you, it’s nerve rattling to say the least.
BUT - I don’t recommend going there. The place is cursed number one, but number 2, the state cops patrol here since they’re such small towns, and they’re P*****. I don’t suggest you even attempt it unless you’re willing to pay the fine. An interesting note though - I was there during the day once and it’s actually pretty interesting and calm. Creepy, but calm. It’s true, there’s not any animals in there, no birds…nothing. But seeing the foundations is pretty neat and there’s a lot of endangered plants there. There’s also nutso people who live around the property though…and they also call the cops.

    Enjoy!

I used to work for a blood lab and picked up from the morgue and one day it was raining and i went inside to get the blood and i came out it put the **** in the car and i came out of the car and there was this girl standind in front of me and sked me what i was doing and i told her, she asked me again what are you doing i told her again i looked back in the car i came back out and she was gone. I looked all around to see where she went and i could not find her.
