Thearosa’s Bridge
When this area was first being settled, a woman named Thearosa lived near this bridge along with her children. Though the exact details are unclear, Thearosa eventually killed her children and then herself. Today, she haunts the bridge. The weather on the bridge is never the same as anywhere else in town. The bridge has also been set on fire several times; investigations reveal nothing.
I’ve seen her

I was just curios as to where exactly this bridges location is at ?I use to live in wichita and during my youth years there as a teenager many of us use to go to a bridge in the Valleycenter area,so i thought maybe it was there.I also remember a very long dark dirt road somewhere in Valleycenter ,when one nite we decided to investigate and we took a turn down some dirt road , well we kept driving and out of know where a strange figure appeard out of no where with a needle of some sort in it’s hand then as we drove away all scarred along the road to the side about every couple of feet we would see all types of needles on the road.Up to this day when i go out there to kansas we all get together and drive by there and yes we still see that sight

the story is that she was driving home with her youngest child in the car when she lost control of the car going over the side of the bridge. Somehow in the water she found the body of her child but his head was gone. It is said that she roams across the bridge trying to find the head of her child, trying to take a head to replace her childs head since she cannot find his. This is the story I grew up hearing while I lived in Wichita.

the story of thearosas bridge is she was running from some indians when she got this bridge because she was running through the woods with an infant her child of course and was gong to raped or murdered not real sure about either on but she was desprite to not let her child be taken hostage by indians that she threw it over the bridge and could not live with her self and then threw herself over

I HAVE HEARD THAT IT WAS AN INDIAN WOMAN RUNNING FROM SOLDIERS WITH HER INFANT BABY & WAS TRYING TO ESCAPE CAPTURE BY HIDING IN THE SMALL CREEK. THE SOLDIERS CAPTURED HER & DROWNED THE BABY. PROBABLY KILLED HER TOO. IT IS SAID THAT IF YOU CALL TO HER SAYING THAT YOU HAVE HER BABY; SHE’LL KNOCK YOU OFF THE BRIDGE. MY MOTHER TOLD ME THAT WHEN SHE WAS YOUNG; THEY WENT TO THE BRIDGE TO “PARTY”. THEY PARKED THE CAR & WALKED THE CREEK. THEY WERE SPOOKED & WENT BACK TO THE VEHICLE, BUT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT IN THE SAME SPOT AS THEY HAD LEFT IT. I RECENTLY WENT THERE DURING MY LAST VISIT TO THE KANSAS AREA. THE BRIDGE IS DIFFERENT. SUPPOSEDLY THE WOODEN BRIDGE BURNED YEARS AGO. A CONCRETE BRIDGE W/ LOTS OF SPRAY PAINT IS IN IT’S PLACE. NOTHING OUT OF THE NORMAL HAPPENED WHILE WE WERE THERE. BUT WE DID ASK ABOUT IN THE LOCAL GAS STATION & THE LOCALS HAD A LAUGH ON US FOR MAKING THE EFFORT TO FIND THEAROSA.

The bridge is 15 minutes north of Wichita, you will leave Wichita heading north on Meridian. When you get to 109th turn left. It is the first cement bridge. The road will curve after you leave the bridge. Good luck.

I live in Newton, Kansas. It’s really close to the bridge. I was actually there last night. The story I heard was that Thearosa was an Indian women. A white soldier fell in love with her, and they had a ‘love’ child together. When the soldier’s platoon found out about the affair, they killed the soldier, and Thearosa and the infant went on the run. When she came accros the bridge, she knew she was doomed and either…
A. Threw the baby over, then jumped herself
B. Threw the baby over so that she would not have to worry about it being harmed
C. They both jumped together
It gives you a really freaky feeling! On the corner of 109th and Meridian, there is this little fort, that has corsses, and shovels and all kinds of weird objects. We were there last Halloween, and we got out of the car, and walked around. When we got back into the car, the keys were gone, and found underneith the car, right in the middle of the bridge, and the mirrors in the car were all backwards…turned around. I about crapped myself. If you are close, I would recomend visiting this bridge.

I would like more information on haunted places in the Wichita area. I have heard mamy stories and have seen pictures with orbs of what used to be called the Rock in Wichita. I would love to share with all of you a grave yard just 35 minutes north of Wichita that is surely haunted. All 15 plus occupants are under the age of 10, but there are 2 headstones in the center under a dead tree of 2 adults. The groung is always soft and seems recently disturbed, even thougn no one goes there. The tree has since been cut since I brought a group out there, but it’s there. I proise, many people can not make the 100 yards from the road to the cemetary without freezing up and turning back. Eiv, restless, or just unable to move on, you tell me.

I would like to know the exact location of the grave yard of which you speak, Kent William. I live in Wichita and love to go to old cemetaries. I work in a town about 25 miles from Wichita, and we believe the building is haunted. I’ve been there for 15 years, and we have heard footsteps down the hall, windows and doors slamming shut, and voices. After some photographs were taken recently of some remodeling done in the building, numerous orbs appeared in some of the photos.

hey..i grew up in valley center and the track team use to run over the bridge lol. i was the manager so i would hide under the remains of the bridge and scare them. One night close to halloween a bunch of us went out there and some of us stayed in the car, some walked to the bridge. Nothin happened but we didnt do the saying. Weird thing was some weird guy showed up out of no where wanted a light for his cigarette and when we decided to leave..my brother screamed out of the window and a woman voice could be heard screaming back. ..also for those who like haunted places. Check with people in garden city. Supposely there is a cememtary there and a rumor bout a “angel of death”. Probably could ask some college kids

ok let me clear this matter up for all of you. the story is.. thearosa was an indian woman in love with a cowboy. when her tribe found out they came for the both of them. when they found them they were at the bridge. the tribe took her baby (because the dad was the cowboy) and threw it over the bridge. in shock thearosa jumped in the water to save the baby and also drowned. the tribe then killed the cowboy. if you go out there at night and say thearosa i have your baby 5 times you can see a ghostly figure along the water on one side of the bridge and on the other you will hear the indian drums and chanting. also the bridge is in valley center off of broadway and i think 119th. i know how to get there just dont remember the street name.

First of all there is no “correct” story. I have heard about 4 million different variations of the story for this bridge. People tell the story different everytime. Some say Theorosa was a farmers daughter who killed her children and others say she was an Indian maiden who lost her baby in a flood. We used to drive out the bridge since I lived just a few miles away. Everyone said that if you went to the bridge and said “Theorosa I am your child” she would pull you into the water and drown you. I’ve never seen any ghosts, lights or heard any strange noises at this bridge. It’s pretty much in the middle of nowhere and it is really small. The original wood bridge is no longer there, it burned down and now a small cement bridge stands there. It’s north of Valley Center right off of Meridian before 125th street if you really want to go there. Like I said before it is a small cement bridge so you might not notice it right off.

Well the story i grew up hearing was that thearosa was an indian woman and fell in love with a white man. The man got her preg. and the other indians found out they chased thearosa and the soulder to the bridge where they staded for a few days and during those days thearosa had her baby. When the other indians found her they put an arrow through thearosa and the white mans heart.Later after that they found the baby and drowned it. Now she is said to look for her lost baby.

I have been to the bridge, purely by accident at first. See, I am formally from Upstate N.Y. My first visit there was in the fall. I had rode a bike there with a freind. The freind had ducked into some brush to releave himself. I stayed at the bridge. I remember seeing a dog, perhaps a german shephard, it was wet and mud was caked in its fur. It stood for a moment in front of me. When the wind blew past me, i got a whiff of dead smell. Funny, I knew the dog was dead. I have never gone to that area since.

I have a question! I have heard that a indian warrior cut the baby into pieces and throughs the baby into the water and the mother walked up and down the bridge yelling Thearosa Thearosa until she died Thearsoa was the baby’s name. Only one of the bones of the baby hs been found today
Comment by Nikki | 04.22.2006 | 8:27 pm
the true story is that an indian woman who had a baby girl and named her Thearosa with a white man and because of that her tribe thought of her as a traitor and killed the man and threw Thearosa in the creek(there wasnt a bridge then it was built way after)they kept the mother prisnor and tortured her until one day she got away she went looking for her baby and to this day she still looks for her baby you can here her yelling Theorosa’s name and here baby cries…some people even see them….

This is the story I found online about Therosa’s bridge:
Kansas has numerous stories of ghostly apparitions that haunt old bridges, cemeteries and universities across the state. Haunting specters have been reported in nearly every town in Kansas. Reports have been made that ghosts still travel the Chisolm Trail and haunt old delivery stations of the Pony Express. Kansas has a long and well known history of ghostly visitors. Some of these terrifying tales may only be urban legend but some, as many believers will attest, are frightingly real.
Therosa’s
Bridge:
One of the oldest and most famous ghost stories of the prairie is the sad tale of Therosa and the bridge she haunts. The bridge located 3 miles out of Valley Center crosses Jester Creek. It was here that in the late 1800’s a local farm wife named Therosa gave birth to an illegitimate child. Therosa was so frightened of what her husband would do to her if he found out, that in a panic she threw her child from the bridge and into the creek below. Therosa, then realizing what she had done flung herself into the waters below, hoping to find and save her baby. Her attempts were in vain and tragically both mother and child drowned. Since their deaths over 100 years ago many people have reported eerie shapes looming in the water, floating orbs of light, cars that stall as they cross the bridge, cold breezes on the hottest of summer nights, voices in the darkness and a baby’s cry floating on the breeze…

Ok, I don’t if this is true or not. Let’s just remember that just because a spirit doesn’t make contact with everyone doesn’t mean that a spirit won’t make contact with someone, whether good or bad. To find the bridge, go to http://www.mapquest.com and put in your address as the starting address and the ending address in as Jester’s Creek, the real name of the bridge, and the city and state as Valley Center, Kansas. The exact address for it should pop up. Written directions and map. Happy Hauntings!

I lived just south of the Jester Creek from 1987 to 2004. I’d heard the stories, but it wasn’t until I tried to ride my horse across any bridge that crossed this creek that I noticed something strange. My horse would go as far as to try and flip over backwards to keep from taking me near it. In 2001 I rode west of my farm, across the railroad tracks and then the bridge. He became so spooked, his legs stiffened, then he suddenly exploded. He flipped upside down, pinning me, I got hung up in the stirrup before he flipped me again, leaving me for dead face down in a bean field. He went straight back home and when I got there (with a broken hand and arm) he stood and shook for 30 min. In my opinion, Therosa has nothing on the fact that the area between 109th and the Big Ditch was a summer camp area for several tribes of indians who were later massacared by the Cavalry sent there to (exterminate) make it safe for the white man. This area is full of bad blood, and unexplained happenings.

We got out and checked it out. I checked out the ones on the top of the roof and the way they were set up someone would have to have been on the top of the car because of the aquard position it was from standing to the side, and the hand prints were way way smaller than my hands and im 16, n e ways we were kinda freaked but i didnt have my camrea DANGIT lol but ill comment back if i get any new experiences

My husband and I went to Theorosa’s bridge. Everyone thinks it’s the first bridge with all the spray paint on 109th and meridian, but it’s not. if you park your after you go across the bridge and walk north, you will see some concret where the bridge used to be. I went there when I was pregnant and said “Theorosa I have your baby.” nothing really happened until a few minutes later. All of a sudden there was thick fog surrounding us. That kinda creeped me out, but we decided to go down the road a 1/4 mile. We were told that on the north side of the road through the trees there is still a foundation for the house where Theorosa was said to live. I had my digital camera with us and as soon as we got to the spot 1/4 mile down the road my camera went dead. Another lady with us had a camera with her too. She took a picture right outside of the car and there was an apperition (sp) right in front of us. I kept trying to turn my camera on (I had 2 fully charged batteries with me). My camera would work fine until I kept pointing to one certain area of the trees. (Spirits drain energy so I knew we were close.) We started walking towards the foundation and heard a couple men and a woman’s voice. We were all alone out there. We did get some orbs on camera, there were 2 blue and 1 yellow. The yellow one from what I understand means caution. The creeks name though is Jester’s Creek and you will see orbs on camera all up and down the creek. Spirits are drawn to certain areas and energies and that creek is one of them.

Ok, I am 14, My 18 year old brother and I went to this bridge. Along the side of the road b4 the bridge we saw a bunch of crosses, and ahead, we saw 2 casckets, but they disappeard as we got closer to the bridge. When we got on the bridge, my brother parked his car, and we got out. he left his keys sitting on the dash, like he always usually does. we stayed there 4 like 30 min. my brother had a camera phone and he was trying to take pictures to see if there were any orbs, his phone instantly turned off! But his battery was fully charged b4 we went, that freaked us out. Then all of the sudden, we heard “where is my baby” 3 times, it got louder every time, so we were so scared, we got back in the car and tried to leave, but we couldnt, the keys were gone! we did not know what happened, our only choice was to get oun and try to find them. We finally found them at the end of the bridge, so we went back to the car, and the door was locked, this was so unbelieveable, we unlocked the doors got in the car, but it wouldnt start, and we turned on the lights and saw a woman in front of the car screaming from the top of her lungs, the car suddenly started, we left in a hurry, every since, we havent been there, it was the scariest thing ive ever experienced!!!

Ok just to clear the record. There is a bridge, yes. There are also ruins of the supposed ‘Thearosa house’ about a 1/2 mile away. But thats really about it. The place is spooky I’ll admit, we go out there every halloween. I even captured orbs and a white mass on film last year. Many of the stories on here seem soo unrealistic, maybe they are just that - stories.
The reality is though, that any place can be spooky if enough people believe in it. It helps that the bridge is out in the middle of no where, wayy far away from city lights and noises. Your mind races wondering what that sound was, or where that light came from. I would highly suggest going out there on a cold winters night, you’ll feel a chill from more than just the temperature.
The only good story I have about the bridge has been passed down to me by my mother. (I’m 28 and this happened before I was born). Sometime in the 70’s, my mom and a bunch of her friends went out to the bridge to mess around. This was back when the bridge was wooden, it was broken down but it still existed. They drove in 3 cars, parked next to the bridge, got out and began climbing around like monkeys on the thing. My mom and her best friend were the only sober ones there. All of a sudden, she said the bridge started glowing blue. They screamed for everyone to get off the bridge and eventually they did. But when they all got back to their cars, not one of them would start.
Sounds too spooky to be true right? Well thats what I said until she showed me a news article from the Wichita Eagle website detailing how many people had been seeing the blue glow of the bridge.
Makes you wonder whats really out there…

I went out there last night, we didn’t go far enough on meridian and found two bridges on a dirt road, but my and my buds didn’t feel like it was theorosa bridge.. We decided to leave and stopped by some gas station adn asked to store keeper if he know where the bridge was, he gave us the exact directions to the bridge. We stopped on the bridge, I lit up a cig, and we just stood there listening. We walked around, leanded over the bridge a few times.. the only strange thing that happened was the wind picked up a lot and it got really cold, it was already a little chilly, but the hard wind had more chill to it. We got interrupted by a oncoming car, so we scattered and left, good place to get spooked, i will go back soon..

I went out there with my sister today around 6
and we actually walked down about half way to the creek. We were leaning over to see under the bridge and we started hearing wind. But There was no wind around. We decided to leave cuz we were spooked and at the end of the street there was a cross and a bunch of weird little objects across the ditch.
I decided to climb over there to check it out. My sister told me to shut up and we could hear the loud wind again. But it never sounded like wind. Like a really loud deep moaning. As we were on the bridge there was no wind but the moment we got off the bidge there was alot of wind.

Im really into the supernatural stuff and i actually haven’t had an experience with a supernatural figure but i would like to see what can possiably happen if i go out to the bridge.

Me and my friends are going out to the bridge this friday. We all believe in this kinda stuff but im just a little scptical. I do believe that there is supernatural and hauntings and stuff like that but it just probably that i never have experienced anything that had to deal with that stuff.
i would like to take a camera but what i dont understand is how come if you are there and looking around you do see anything. But if you take a camera or a video recorder you can see stuff that is just something that i dont understand.
This stuff is interesting i guess im just one of those who have to see it or experience something to that extent to believe it. please give me any answer you have by emailing me i would appreciate it.

I am sorry to rain on your haunt, but, this is one of the perpertual urban legends. I am in my late thirties and grew up in Denver. When I was living there we had the same story. Except the woman’s name was Thearona. She murdered her children by drowning them in the lake. If you stood by the water and repeated this same type of phrase, you might see her ghost. Please do a little research. Atchison is a haunted place to visit, don’t waste your time on a bridge.

I live in valley Center on Jacobs street I can walk to the bridge from where I live, my boyfriend and I spent all last summer there..and saw and heard nothing..except for animals…I think Theorosas bridge is a legend created by a bunch of bored teenagers living in a small town, people think they hear and see things at Theorosas Bridge because they are too drunk or too high to know that what they are hearing and seeing is just animals..its the country there are lots of animals.

I have been to this bridge many times and nothing happens at all> This is a myth and was started at least 25 years ago. Every town has a story. Valley Center needed one so this is the best they could do.

I used to live in Wichita and I heard about this bridge and i cant believe its on the internet. I heard that there was an old guy trying to kill them all and when they went to the bridge the guy hit them with a huge pitch fork and killed her and her kids who cares what the true story is if everyone heard about it must be true!
Comment by Trystin | 10.17.2006 | 11:34 am
This story may or may not be fact, however the idea that some of you have been there and experienced nothing, and then try to tell everyone the story or tales are fake, is ridiculous. Ditch your scotomas, open your mind, and don’t show up there with a huge group of drunk or drug induced people.. There are limits to situations like these.

I am known by most as Whoosah. I have lived a mile from the bridge for 28 years and have visited it quite a few times. I don’t know if it is truely haunted or not, I haven’t had anything happen while I was out there, yet. I’m not shure on the accuracy of the story but I did hear someone say that Thearosa was an indian woman who lost her baby to some settlers when they found out that she was a single mother raising an infant. The settlers were not pleased and threw the baby in the river where the bridge was located. I’m not shure what happend to Thearosa but I hear that after her demise she supposedly spends an eternaty looking for her baby. The rule of thumb is that when you get to the actual bridge (which was burned down by the way, twice) you antaganize Thearosa by saying “Thearosa I have your baby!” and bad things may happen.
The actual bridge is at west of 109th and Meridian but when you get to the first concret bridge you have to get out and walk a around 100ft or so, North of the bridge along the hedge row and find what is left of the old wooden bridge in the trees. From there your on your own. As being native to the area we all know that many people come out to see the bridge but what I think thats important is not tearing up the area and trashing the place. There are still people who farm the field next to it and I think he has to be a pretty good sport about not calling the police. So be safe and have fun but don’t trash the place, please.
By the way, there is no correct story to Thearosa’s Bridge. There was a book published when I was about 16 by a woman who I dont know her name. That is one of storys that I know of and on the book it states that it is fictional. The story that I mentioned above is the one that I grew up hearing though. Happy Haunting……

I have never been to the bridge but I have heard a story from a friend. He said he went out there with his mom and a friend. He said they did see a figure and some weird things happened. I was told an Indian Girl got pregant by a white cowboy and her tribe was against it and told her to either get rid of the baby or leave the tribe so she threw her baby over the bridge. She goes back and haunts it to find her baby and if u say therosa I have your baby she will go nuts and attack you..I guess the word is. I told my friend I wanted to visit this bridge and hope to experiece something and maybe get some pictures.

OK, everyone I am 24 yrs old and I have lived in valley center most of my life until I moved to wichita. Now listen Theorosa is real you have to be open minded in order to actually see or hear anything, when I went out there I seen her shadow walking the creek and I heard her baby crying, I also have had car trouble, so when you go do not park on the bridge park in front or in back, my head lights would not come on and ever since my headlights have had a short in them. SO PLEASE IF YOU GO OUT THERE BE RESPECTFUL TO HER AND HER BABY, AND PLEASE DON’T PARK ON THE BRIDGE OR YOU MAY NOT MAKE IT HOME.
Comment by Candace | 11.3.2006 | 2:13 pm
The story of Theorosa has been around for a very long time. When I was a teenager I used to go to the bridge late at night with friends. The bridge used to be down a lane of thick trees and it used to be a blocked road because the bridge was an old iron bridge that had the wood bottom that had been burned out. The road was unusable. The story that I got was that an indian woman was crossing the bridge with her baby in her arms. The river was swollen from flood waters. The current was to swift and Theorosa was knocked down and her baby was carried off in the water. Overcome with grief Theorosa jumped into the flood and went searching for her baby. She still walks the riverbanks trying to find the child that she lost. Yes there have been many scary times for me at that bridge. When I was 14 we went to the bridge and said the Theorosa name 3 times. At first nothing happend. Then as we were about to leave you could hear walking in the sticks and crying. We stood very still. Someone whispered in my ear… “Where is my baby?” Prank???? maybe but I was there and the ear that was whispered into? No one was there!!

So far…it’s been interesting…
First time we were out there…we rolled up on about 2999 high schoolers…and when 2 girls started fighting as I strolled through…
I figured it was pointless…
Last night 4 of us went and all the pics were clear until I told thearosa I wanted a pic with her…the next picture was full of haze…and I watched a bright star float across the creek, over the tree’s and straight towards us…(I thought about it being camera flash…but I never looked at the camera)
The picture takin as I was watching it…captured the star beside me in a distance…
As the star got closer, I got overwhelmed and backed up to my running vehicle…now I figured in the fact that the wind was blowing my exhaust to the North…and the pictures where all south…
I made sure that we weren’t getting pics of the exhaust from my vehicle…
As the star approached, she took one last pic as I was reaching backwards for my door handle…and screamed we need to get the **** out of here! As I promptly hopped in and sped off…
The time line of pics went from…
1. Nothing - no orbs pics were clear
2. Weird Haze - Double checked to not be exhaust…
3. Star Moving - away from and then back to
4. Tons of Orbs and haze
a. Star right along side me but in a distance
5. Last Pic - Shape of a Large Skull formed from the haze. Coming over the Bridge.
No BS…No made up stories…just what we have experienced…we are going back in a bit to get more….
Ghosts have a tendency to attatch themselves and want to “ride along”…
I took 6 pictures with my camera phone of my empty passenger seat in the dark after dropping off my friends…and upon further examination…Have concluded that every picture has a different face…and or multiple faces…
So what ever is out there…there is more than one…
I have heard a story of the “Real Bridge” and plan on finding that one also…
It has been discribed as 100 times worse…and down a narrow road that has been now blocked by trees…
We’ll see…I have had a few friends that have found it…and One was physically thrown 20 feet backwards by her hair and knocked unconcience awakin to her friend scream “we gotta get the **** out of here!”
She doesn’t make this **** up…and the bump on her head was proof enough for me…
So you can believe or not…but I would say go see what you can find…
Sorry about the spelling it’s 5:27 am…and we’ve been ghost hunting all night…and last night so…yeah…
Tonight Thearosa’s bridge was pretty quiet…but we also had 7 people and 2 cars…I find the best is one vehicle and 4 people max…
I just call it like I see it…and so far, it’s been interesting…
Good Luck…

I didn’t believe the thearosa story (still don’t) but my cousin and I drove out to the supposed bridge, did the whole thearosa I have your baby thing, and even drove a little farther, down the road to the 2nd bridge, still nothing… We thought we saw a light, but I figured that was just a car on another road out there… Then we stopped somewhere and were talking about it, and someone told us that the actual bridge is on private property, the family owns the land, and made sure that no one could get to the bridge because of the tale… And I heard that she was suffering from postpartum depression, and her baby wouldn’t stop crying so she threw it over the bridge one night, and then jumped herself when she realized what she had done… But I don’t even think the real bridge is haunted, some people just have crazy imaginations…

When you go on a ghost hunt, you have to be mentally and physically prepared for what you are going to encounter. Most of the time, it’s just your imagination playing tricks on you. Discredit any sounds that might be attributed to the living (as in other people messing with your head, animals in the wild, etc). Also throw out meteorilogical phenomena. Just because it’s foggy doesn’t mean it’s haunted. Just because you capture orbs on camera doesn’t mean that it’s a ghost. It could very well be water condensation in the air. To scientifically prove a haunting and experience a paranormal moment, you must be able to prove what DIDN’T happen first. Understand?
That being said, I have been to Thearosa’s many times…both the concrete bridge as well as the burned down bridge. Our group made several errors on our last trip that ended up being costly. Rule number one–STAY TOGETHER! Don’t go walking your own separate ways. My friend Michael and I went walking by the creek and down to the burned out bridge alone. Rule number two–TAKE PROPER EQUIPMENT! We didn’t have a flashlight and could here all sorts of animals running around. Deer, coyotes, etc. Rule number three–DON’T FREAK OUT IF SOMETHING PARANORMAL TAKES PLACE! While walking back to the rest of our group, Michael and I began feeling a heavy pressure on our bodies, shallow breathing, fatigue. Granted, it’s quite a hike to the original bridge, but that’s not why it was happening. As we continued forward, I was hit from ahead by something unseen. I was knocked ten feet away from where Michael and I were standing. STANDING! I didn’t trip, I didn’t slip, we looked all over the ground for anything that could have hit me or caused me to fall backwards. We couldn’t find anything. Michael said that he heard two noises…the first was something hitting me, the second was me hitting the ground. We are unable to say what exactly happened that night, but we haven’t been back out there since.
Be advised that there is a concentration of strange occurances around that area of Valley Center, and while most of you want to go down there for a thrill seeking expedition, I would not advise that you go any further than the concrete bridge. There is enough activity there to get your thrill factor without hurting yourselves. We have captured many EVP’s, photographs of children and other various people, orbs, etc. Truly it does have it’s share of paranormal activity, but to the untrained venturer, you’re just asking for trouble.
If you go down there, just make sure that you are ready to accept the responsibility of everything that you are bringing upon yourself. You may think it’s a fun scary game, but mind you…you’re not the only one playing, and they’ll get their turn as well.
Comment by Rage | 01.20.2007 | 8:40 pm
Imagination is a whole part of ghost hunting…otherwise all ghost would be debunked scientific retorics of nothingness…
Somebody would find some way of killing every possible fact of what is…
Imagination is what keeps them alive…
Comment by MeCanX | 01.24.2007 | 3:49 pm
Joel, did you not understand anything that I wrote? Not everything can be scientifically proven. That leaves a small window open to theory, hypothesis, “imagination” if that’s what you want to call it. What I’m conveying is that people freak out because they hear a noise that they can’t explain, see a shape they can’t decipher…but with further investigation, it’s proven to be something completely legitimate. Not all skeptics are scientists, and not all believers are experts in this field. Get it?

Hi, I just Stumbled onto this site. I was looking up ghost stories in kansas, and found this one. Yeah, I remember this bridge. i went there some months ago, cant remember what month it was, but it was summertime. i had went their with a freind. We got to the old part, where the cement walls are, and my freind had to pee, so, he went into some brush. But I stayed on the path. I remember seeing a dog, it had come from , well, the water I imagine, cause it was all wet, and dirty. But, it stood there, and just kept looking at me. It was silent though, it didnt move at all. But the thing i remember most was it smelled dead. It scared me into a froze state. I tried to call for my freind, but no sound would come out of my mouth. I thaught I was going to have a heart attack, I scare sometimes, easily.
I wont go back. to this day, when i have a minute alone, I think about that night, and it still causes me to chew my fingernails, cause I still get unnerved.

Omg! I went with my friends Jessica and Tatiana. We were walking around and came to the bridge. Being scared, we decided to go back. But when we got to the end of the bridge, we heard a scream. A woman had appeared and was looking over the bridge, calling for her baby and crying. Then moments later, she jumped over the bridge herself. We started to run… But she got them…. My friends… Tatiana and Jessica… She took them! I WILL NOT REST UNTIL SHE IS GONE! GONE FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!

Me and my boyfriend Mane were taking a walk over the bridge. We came to the middle.. and stopped. We kept hearing mooning and crying sounds. And turning our attention to the other side of the bridge a woman about to jump off the bridge. My boyfriend.. He tried to save her.. She pushed him in!!! SHE PUSHED HIM IN!!!!!!!!! That was the saddest day of my life. My boyfriend died because of a ghost. I HATE HER!

Me and my girlfriend Tatiana were driving to her parents house. Being new in this area we did not know about the ghost of the bridge. Not knowing we just were driving over having a good time talking, it was at night and we really didnt know where we were going. Everything was fine until our car stopped. It died. I went out to see if we ran into something but I saw nothing. Then she appeared.. At the end of the bridge, saying I had her baby. She came at me. I ran back to my car and me and my girlfriend drove away. We have never gone back there since.

You can take this story or not,I was born and raised in Wichita I am now 52 yrs. old and yes I have been to this bridge but once was enough for me.You go there and stand at the end of that bridge and yell thearosa thearosa I have come to take your baby and you will leave with a brand new perspective of what you may now doubt she killed her baby at that bridge and now she protects her baby if you are so doubtful and think that this is but an old wives tale go out there and see for yourself I was 15 when I was there and have no desire to return I can’t explain what I saw nor do I want to but I can tell you this I will never return to that bridge the arrogant young man that I used to be,some of you want to taunt and tease people that have experienced the same thing that I have well you’re idiots but maybe just maybe those of you that are critics will pump up your heart to go out there and believe me you will have your minds opened to things that you would never think possible.

ok i’ve been many times to this bridge. but the bridge that your on, is not the real bridge. you have to go west into the woods following the creek and you will find the real brigde. it was wooden, they burnt it down, built a cement one and people were still getting hurt out there so they blew it up, pieces of the bridge are still there, and a piece of the wooden bridge is coming out of the ground. and it is true. when your out there, you’ll see 3 different things and hear a baby. first you’ll see a dog, or the dogs eyes and hear him in the trees. the dog belonged to thearosas white lover. you will also see the white man who was killed on the bridge. and thearosa if you get lucky enough to hurt her. if your nice and respectful you won’t get hurt. just don’t run. if you run she will get you. but that is all real. i know it is. i’ve been. go there in oct. i’ll be there. i am every weekend. i’m the girl with the quiji board trying to scare people. haha. have fun out there. and watch your back.

I have been there when i was a kid, my brother and his friends pushed me in thinking it was funny. I was really scared because i saw a figure holding something and pacing back and forth. The figure didn’t harm me but just looked at me then disappear. I recommend going there but be respectful. Oh Katlin what time did you go there? You could acctually feel and see the ghost if you go during the night.

A few days ago I was perofrming a Ninjitsu mental connections exercize. We did this on the bank of the Arkansas river in Wichita. I sensed nothing strange at the time. That night, I dreamed of a bridge and a woman. This feeling has been getting stronger the last couple of days and is now demanding great focus. Meditating on this for awhile today I began to search the Internet, where I found this site.
Since this will be the first haunting I have ever pursued (not my cup of tea) I’m not sure if this bridge is what I envisioned or not, but I’m going to start here anyway. I will go there but don’t feel I need to wait for nightfall.
I am not a thrill seeker. I am not going to get drunk or to get high. I am going because I feel (right or wrong) I was asked to go. That I knew before I discovered this site. And I am surely not going in order to antogonize any spirits. Envision if you will losing your baby and people coming to the site of your demise screaming that they have *your* baby.
I do sense great beauty but deep loss. I will try to find the old bridge and meditate there, and yes into the night if that is what I feel I must do.

I re-read it but missed these words. I meant to offend no one.

What gives with the grammar and spelling on here? I’m amazed at how many people on here seem to struggle with grammar and spelling, some can’t even spell the simplest word. Why? At what point did school stop teaching English?
And for those who wonder where Thearosa’s Bridge is, just open your eyes and read the comments on here. I am amazed at how many people kept asking where the damn bridge was at even though the location had been mentioned a dozen times.
And stop repeating the legend associated with the bridge, we know the legend already from the first 10 people who repeated each other.

Last night myself and 7 of my friends went on the search for this bridge. Due to our nerves and it being two in the morning it took a little while to find it. Upon driving over the bridge the first time, both drivers of the two cars had some sort of paranormal feeling simultaneously.
Upon getting out we first took pictures with the camera pointed towards a flashlight at the water, there were a few “orbs”. Upon taking a picture without a flashlight and just the flash of the camera, at least 4 dozen “orbs” appeared on the screen. We then had one person take a picture of the rest, for some reason there were 2 to 3 large “orbs” overlapping my face and mine only.
So we go ahead and simply found the middle of the bridge and yelled “Theorosa I have your baby” three times. Of course nothing happened instantely. But what happened between 5 and 30 minutes later were quite interesting.
Although there was no frog nor floating lights, when just one of us went to the middle of the bridge and the rest stayed on the western end, you could very distinctley hear a baby crying. A few minutes later when taking more pictures, there were several “lightning bolts” and flashes of light that couldnt have been anything of solid matter. On the southern side of the bridge, 2 or 3 at a time could hear distinct footprints/horse steps.
When about five of my friends layed on the bridge in the middle, they proceeded to hear the baby crying and a sort of loss of breathe upon hearing it.
I am one that has never believed in ghosts or any other paranormal happenings, but the occurrences last night has definately gotten me interested and I will be checking into more of these “hauntings”.
I suggest if going out there, go ahead and bring a flashlight, and if you can, go with just one or two other people. Having seven other people around is very distracting and it is very hard to hear what is going on. I know I will for sure be returning soon with just one person to verify these events and possibly change my mind.

My dad beleives that somethin will happen, and my mom does not beleive in ghosts at all, she thinks the whole idea is stupid. Were gonna split up into 2 groups and see if we see anything. i’m bringing 2 video cameras, a regular film camera, tape recorder, and flashlights. I will comment again, 1’st thing we get back. Me and my friend went out to the bridge last night and some REALLY weird things happend. we walked out to the wooden bridge and on the way there we heard indian war drums along with their cries of battle. we of course were frozen in fear to the spot in which we were standing…but then it abruptly stopped. we decided to keep going and we finally reached the wooden bridge, and when we looked into the water we saw a baby floating on top of the water. then we heard a lady scream and the baby disappeared. then we looked into the forest and saw an indian woman standing there and we looked at her and she looked back and then smiled at us and taunted “NO NO PLEASE TURN AROUND, IM GETTING LIGHT HEADED! IM GOING TO HAVE A HEART ATTACK KEVIN I SWEAR!” me and my friend were completely befuddled on who “KEVIN” is and why a ghost would be getting light headed..then she said, “whoever comes back here will pay” and after she said that she disappeared. we fled the woods and retreated back to our car and drove away as fast as we could. as we were driving off though, we looked to the right and in the middle of the corn field there was a sign with the names “Cole, Kevin, Conner, and Garrett” we had absolutely no idea who these people were but i dont want to find out! we got home and i will NEVER EVER go back to that place!!!!

I’ve lived in this area since the 50’s. The original wooden bridge was burned down in the early 70’s when a parent of a Valley Center High School student burned it down after hearing about the haunts. There has been a new cement bridge built over this creek where most of the activity has been occurring. The foundation of her home was still there in the late 70’s and was a local party spot that kept local police men busy. The stories have varied over the years. Yes this place is haunted!! I’ve seen many things there but most were figured out to be nothing.
The story was that a white local man married an Indian lady and she became pregnant. In the early 1900’s jobs were scarce and the local people looked down on mixed marriages with Indians. The husband went west searching for a job to support his family, but never returned. The baby was born and Thearosa was unable to take care of her child. They were starving and she couldn’t get any help. One night in a depressed hysterical state she took her baby wrapped in a sheet and dropped her off the old wooden bridge and walked back to her small house in the woods. Later she realized what she had done and went back to find her child. Unable to find the child she jumped off the bridge killing herself.
The story goes if you go to the bridge at midnight and call out Thearosa Thearosa where are you, she will appear in the creek searching for her baby.
Many stories from locals have seen her and have had things happen to their cars while crossing the bridge. People have seen her walking the road back into her house. I have seen lights and images but that was many years ago. I have fled from there feeling as if my life was in danger. People used to have gatherings at the foundation of her house. To the best of my knowledge that was all plowed over several years ago when the old bridge was destroyed and removed before the new cement bridge was erected.
I have heard that the haunting still occurs.
I still live in Valley Center, Ks.
This place is real, and yes it is haunted.

The bridge is not in Wichita!!!!! Please change to fact. It is about 10 or so miles into VALLEY CENTER, which in fact is not even a suburb of Wichita. Sorry but I have seen a least 5 website that has this false information on it. I am a form believer that if you are going to post a story you should at least have the right town. I grew up near there, and I know the place.
Comment by Pious | 10.23.2007 | 4:45 pm
@Pious
Actually, Valley Center is in fact a suburb of Wichita. Suburb: residential areas on the outskirts of a city or large town; a district lying immediately outside a city or town, esp. a smaller residential community. Valley Center is literally 4 miles north of Wichita. When giving a general idea of where the bridge is to others outside the immediate area, saying the bridge is in Valley Center is pointless - saying it’s in the Wichita area gives a better idea to those not from here.
Oh and also, the bridge is in fact about 2.5 miles north of Valley Center city limits, about 100 yards to the west of Meridian.

The true story of this is: A local farm wife had a child by another man. Inorder to hide her shame she threw the baby from the bridge and then drown herself in the river below. They say now that if you go onto the bidge late at night and say the following “Theorosa, Theorosa, my name is Theorosa.” Then she will come out, attack you and try to throw you from the bridge. I know this because i live no more than three miles from it.

ok some weird things happened last night. We havent been there since the end of summer, so we were really scared. When we got there no one was there except us.When we got there we parked our car on the first bridge. It was already pretty cold last night but when we got out of the car the wind started to pick up and it got really cold. In the howls of the wind we heard the indian drums. We were scared out of our minds, but we decided to stay. So we started to walk down a path in the cornfield, we walked for about 5 minutes and we looked to the left side of us and there was a flag that had the thirteen colonies on it.That was freaky because that had to be a long time ago. So we decided to turn around and on the way back our heavy duty flashlight went out so we sprinted as fast as we could back to the car. When we got back in our car the flashlight worked perfectly fine. So we decided to walk down and under the bridge. When we started walking down there we heard something run the through the trees it had to be something big because it made a lot of the trees shake. So we decided to go home for that night.
We went back again today we wanted to get to the bridge. So we had to go through this little path by the river there was a lot of trees and bushes. On the way there there was a little opening where u could see the river and when we looked over there we saw the baby floating in the water. So i decided to be a ****** and yell theorosa i see your baby and she came running out of the woods and when we saw her the baby dissapered. And theorosa started staring at us and said be careful u r in danger. So we decided to keep on going ecause we didnt think she would do anything, but we were wrong. We kept on walking down the path and we finally found the concrete bridge. We all jumped on top of it and said therosa i have your baby 3 times. And she came out of the water and pushed my brother in the water and looked at us and said i told you you should be careful. So we were freaked out my brother got out, he wasnt hurt. So we decided to leave and go back to the car. We finally made it back to the car. When we got there my brothers rear view mirror was turned around. We got in the car and turned it back around. And we drove out of there fast. When we looked down the path again we saw a black dog barking and theorosa laughung at us.We will never go back there again. And knowone else should either. THIS PLACE IS FREAKY AND VERY HAUNTED!

Isn’t the question whether or not she’s/them are real. And Debi, damn are you obessessed with this. You don’t have to constantly remind readers you were supposedly family members with the deceased, even IF you are.The reak hauntings are in Stahl Kansas. Finally, if people took pictures and ****, why don’t you post them with a link for the skeptics, like myself.I’d like to see orbs and ghostly figures.I’d believe when i see but i’m not saying it’s not real. It’s like aliens or bigfoot.

no! i went there last week and me and a few friends were bored so we decided to go underneath it and there was a terrible smell and all of the sudden we saw some thing walking twards us, we though it was a deer but it was way too loud and way too big then we freaked and tried to go back up as fast as we could. we got to our cars but my friend that was with me said that he felt something grab his leg, we thought he was kidding, till the next day he had sprained the same ankel. i thought it was creepy. but the freaky part is, is that i didnt think it was true that your car wouldnt start if you parked on the bridge, well think again…ya didnt start for about 10 minutes. we just grabed my ipod and listened to jesus music and prayed. Till this day i am scared to go back but if you want a good rush, thats the place to go. but i recommend you bring an extra pair of underwear and cigarettes because you will really be freaking out. but she will not touch you or hurt you physically, she will just freak you out!
