What is up with the figures in the tree? Did someone have an affair with a married spouse. Or was it some unlawful marriage and a jealous suiter found out and killed the couple. And their spirits roam in the tree to watch out over couples.

This is an interesting story. No one knows the actual story behind it. I have heard Indian, Indian Wives who had been raped who had wanted their stories known, I have heard kids and men who had wanted their pets back after their pets had died. I guess we will never know.

I have walked on Mackworth Island many times and find it very peaceful and a spiritual place. The "pet cemetary" you talk about, is actually the pets of former Governor Baxter of Maine. He has two Irish setters and a horse buried there. The dogs were his dearest companions in life and he wanted them to have a special burial. This is the story I have read.

I was there just after new years day and the tree is gone. I have a few pictures I took in 2005 of it. The faces looked carved to me, but it was fun to see.
