After the top half broke off and exposed the hollow core, some people carved a couple of faces there - many people remember when that "stump" had no carvings. Nothing supernatural about it. Whoever carved these was talented, no doubt. I have heard a few stories about "ghosts" in some locations of the school, but never believed these. There was a summer house that was used by the Baxter family. On a dare, I walked up to the door and saw a wizened old lady looking outside at me from a sunroom. I waved at her but she stared at me and I left, feeling uneasy. I mentioned this to one of the staff and found out then that the house had been uninhabited for years. It has since been torn down. It is a beautiful, peaceful, popular place for a walk or a jog. I have have done many EVP sessions and ghost hunts, but not on the island. The faces are just carvings into a tree. The tree appears naturally broken off and naturally hollowed out. It is a hardwood tree, i think a large birch. Nothing paranormal about it. The pet cemetery is a large rock wall ring made by a person who cared about his pets. Gov. Baxter gave a lot of land to the state's residence for their enjoyment for posterity. Baxter State Park is the northern terminus of the appalachian trail. I have never heard of any ghost on the island. There is a bit of an interesting feeling in the woods of the cemetery, but I think that the idea of this place being a hot spot for paranormal activity is way overblown. I have talked to ghost in houses and graveyards in real time and have recorded them on EVP, clearly. I know they exist. Try the Old Stroudwater Cemetery on outer-Congress street! The secret burial site of Col. Westbrook. Try recording EVP with an external collar clip-on condenser mic, using over the ears headphones! Crank up the volume and you will be able to hear voices respond to you! Be respectful and ask questions as though they are ALIVE. Ghosts are not "dead." The just dont have bodies. Treat them with respect and assume they are with you all the time when investigating. Tell them you intention and help them into the light if they wish to go. Call in their loved ones and angels and visualize healing light for them. The may not know that they are not still "alive."
