Real Haunted House

University Chapel

Auburn, Alabama

Once used as a theater, the University Chapel was a hospital during the Civil War. When the chapel was used by theater students, it was haunted by a ghost identified as Sydney Grimlett. When the thespians moved their operations across the street to the Telfair Peet Theater, Sydney followed. Sydney Grimlett, a confederate soldier, had his leg amputated before he died. When there are theater productions, Sydney makes his presence known by opening and closing drawers, making rattling noises, locking and unlocking doors, and destroying equipment only to repair it again. There have also been reports of pianos playing and footsteps on the catwalk.

You guys know this isn’t true and certainly not floating paper? (which you typed in wrong)Come on. Be real the University of Alabama has had a ghost story for many years, this was just made up by someone who wants to either get attention themselves or draw attention to Auburn.

I lived across the street from the chapel for a year and a half and had no experience with this story. I never went in, but walked past the chapel sometimes 3 times a day for all that time. I never heard this story, and never saw, heard or sensed anything. I can only speak for myself, but I don’t believe this one.

...... says:

Uh, Joseph Clark? The word ‘thespians’ is a synonym for the word ‘actors’. It has no relationship whatso ever to the word ‘lesbians’. It’s called a dictionary.

The reason why most people don’t hear or see anything in the chapel is because Sydney has moved to the Telfair Peet Theater. The rest of the story goes is that he made himself known when the Auburn Players would do an English play with southern accents as he was English and was not happy with this. I have heard this story before and actually from a tour of the university before I became a student here. I’ve also heard that if you stand in the door way of the chapel and talk or scream it will not echo. I don’t know if that is true.

Knew a few theater majors who claim this one is true, but who knows. I’m a little skeptical, personally.

Also, even though I hate football, hasn’t Alabama lost to Auburn the past 5 years? Get a clue, kids.

What a crock… I have been in Auburn for over 20 years and have never heard such nonsense… It’s a shame that someone would make a simple comment about a ghost and turn it into a “Football” debate.. Also people, SPELL CHECK!!

yes i agree this is a hauntings site not a football site … and i go to auburn and i have actually hear this story along with plenty of others … we even have a bell tower that is haunted by a cow … you can’t sit there an disclaim a haunting when you’ve never been there or even if u have and nothing happened while u were there because ghosts don’t always want to come out and play if u can put it that way. these stories all originated from somewhere, rather they were meant to scare people or actually have truth in them they are part of the town’s history, so everyone should at least respect that. And btw War Eagle … 5 years in a row bama … just a month shy of number 6 … and whats that we beat the Gators for the 2nd time ending their winning streak !! thought i’d put alittle of school spirit in my comment too !

The only thing that is going to draw attention to Auburn is their football team. Which I hate! Yet I live in Auburn. Never heard of this story and I agree with Amanda. I do not believe it to be true.

I was a theater major and I remember going down into the prop room in the basement of Telfair Peet by myself. I made a habit of chatting with Sydney, you know, just covering my bases. One night I was leaving the prop room with my hands full. I managed to get the door open by myself, but when I passed through the door, something turned out the lights for me.

You rednecks who get on, of all places, “”, and talk about football make me sick. Goddam, for once in your life can you think of something else besides the “Iron Bowl” (it should be called the “Grits Bowl” for all you slack-jawed yokels)? I mean, honestly, is your life that empty and meaningless that you have to attach this sort of totemic meaning to what a bunch of KIDS do in a GAME that only lasts a few hours out of the entire year??? Are you thinking, rational, adults or not? Football is worthless for anything other than mindless entertainment, so go out and do something useful with your OWN life, instead of worrying about it.

Lauren says:

October 5, 2008, 2:17 am

Yeah, I love how people comment on this without even looking into it. I am a current theatre major at Auburn University. Sydney haunts Telfair Peet still today. He takes left shoes and curses performance when he isn’t fed (or is fed something he doesn’t like). Before every performance, someone has to leave food for Sydney on the catwalk. We know at least that he likes Reese’s Pieces and not Butterfingers.

Once while the players were preparing for a performance last year, EVERYTHING was going wrong. Props were missing, equipment wasn’t working, etc. Someone asked the stage manager if there had been food left on the catwalk for Sydney. No. So they went to the vending machine upstairs and got Butterfingers and left it on the catwalk. Thing supposedly took another turn for the worse. Someone hurried to the nearest gas station to get Reese’s Pieces because that candy had proven successful when dealing with Sydney in the past. The candy was left on the catwalks and all of the problems were suddenly resolved and the show went great.

My office window is no more than 10 feet from the university chapel. I have never seen anything nor heard anything and I am here 5 days a week 8 hours a day. But who knows?

Shane says:

OK…..I am not here to comment on football nor am I discussing the superiority of Auburn University versus The University of Alabama. What I AM here to do is to say that there most definately is a “presence” in the chapel at Auburn University. I am an Auburn graduate…….from the Department of Music. I was a student at AU when the Theater Department was relocated, not across the street as the article stated, but to the new facility on Samford next to the Goodwin Music Building. Once the theater moved, the newly restored chapel was outfitted with a very nice pipe organ. The organ was sometimes used by students in the Music Department for practice. On one particular evening, I accompanied a friend of mine to the chapel so that she could practice a piece she was to perform there later in the week. At the time, neither of us was aware of the story of “Sydney”. When we were ready to leave the chapel, we carefull turned off ALL lights, walked to the rear side door, exited and locked the door. As we walked around the building, we noticed through the window that in an area just above the chancel area there was a light that was clearly on. Thinking that we left it on by mistake, we went back into the chapel, turned off the light and made certain that all lights were off. Once again, we exited, locked the door and started for our car. There, clearly visible through the window, was the very same light, on again. By this time we were a little shaken since it was late at night so we opted to leave the light on and go home. The next day when we were relating the story to one of our teachers, he smiled and told us that is was just “Sydney” having fun with us. He then told us the full story. I now teach at Auburn University and have, on numerous occasions been inside the chapel. Each time I am there, I remember that night quite a few years ago when Sydney made himself known to me. Skeptics can believe what they want, but I will never be convinced that the story of Sydney is not true. (and fyi…..for those who might be thinking that a defective light switch may have been causing the light to turn on again…two days after the incident I described above, my friend and I were in the chapel again and had no problem turning the lights off when we left…………all of them ! )

I was actually a theatre student in telfair peet two years ago. I believe this story because sydney has messed with us several times. We couldnt get the dressing room door unlocked and tried several keys, came back and the door was unlocked. Things get moved around alot after shows after everyone has left as if he had played with them. auburn players always blame sydney for peculiar events (a band BLAME SYDNEY! was even formed after this whole story). Oh, and WAR EAGLE!

I was 8 years old, alone in the costume room for the production of The King and I directed by Dr Ralph Miller..back in 1981. I heard the outside door slam and I ran to check because I wasn’t supposed to be in the costume room. I thought I saw the door that slammed moving, which scared me to death because I tried it and it was locked! Yes…the place is haunted. You will get a chill just walking in.

I live in Auburn and have been to the theatre several times. They did a haunted house there when I was a kid, but don’t know it they still do, and I never experienced anything but that’s not to say that nothing is there. Oh, btw, I think the comment about wanting to hear more about the thespians was intended to be a joke and I chuckled when I read it. I’m a Tigers fan myself, but I came to this site not because I’m a fan but because I live in Auburn and wanted to read about the haunted places in the city. However, a lot of theses comments have nothing to do with the haunting. Go figure!

Great news!

The Alabama Paranormal Research Team has recently authored a book of over 20 haunted locations withing the Auburn/ Opelika (Lee County) area including The Auburn University Chapel which they themselves have investigated on many occasions and have documented actual scientific evidence of ghostly activity.

Check out their website to view information about their findings of this haunting and get more details about the book’s release coming this October 2011.
