University Chapel

07.22.2005 | 10:05 pm | Alabama, Auburn, United States

Once used as a theater, the University Chapel was a hospital during the Civil War. When the chapel was used by theater students, it was haunted by a ghost identified as Sydney Grimlett. When the thespians moved their operations across the street to the Telfair Peet Theater, Sydney followed. Sydney Grimlett, a confederate soldier, had his leg amputated before he died. When there are theater productions, Sydney makes his presence known by opening and closing drawers, making rattling noises, locking and unlocking doors, and destroying equipment only to repair it again. There have also been reports of pianos playing and footsteps on the catwalk.

  4. You guys know this isn’t true and certainly not floating paper? (which you typed in wrong)Come on. Be real the University of Alabama has had a ghost story for many years, this was just made up by someone who wants to either get attention themselves or draw attention to Auburn.

  7. I lived across the street from the chapel for a year and a half and had no experience with this story. I never went in, but walked past the chapel sometimes 3 times a day for all that time. I never heard this story, and never saw, heard or sensed anything. I can only speak for myself, but I don’t believe this one.

  8. Uh, Joseph Clark? The word ‘thespians’ is a synonym for the word ‘actors’. It has no relationship whatso ever to the word ‘lesbians’. It’s called a dictionary.

  10. The reason why most people don’t hear or see anything in the chapel is because Sydney has moved to the Telfair Peet Theater. The rest of the story goes is that he made himself known when the Auburn Players would do an English play with southern accents as he was English and was not happy with this. I have heard this story before and actually from a tour of the university before I became a student here. I’ve also heard that if you stand in the door way of the chapel and talk or scream it will not echo. I don’t know if that is true.

  18. Knew a few theater majors who claim this one is true, but who knows. I’m a little skeptical, personally.

Also, even though I hate football, hasn’t Alabama lost to Auburn the past 5 years? Get a clue, kids.

  23. What a crock… I have been in Auburn for over 20 years and have never heard such nonsense… It’s a shame that someone would make a simple comment about a ghost and turn it into a “Football” debate.. Also people, SPELL CHECK!!

  25. yes i agree this is a hauntings site not a football site … and i go to auburn and i have actually hear this story along with plenty of others … we even have a bell tower that is haunted by a cow … you can’t sit there an disclaim a haunting when you’ve never been there or even if u have and nothing happened while u were there because ghosts don’t always want to come out and play if u can put it that way. these stories all originated from somewhere, rather they were meant to scare people or actually have truth in them they are part of the town’s history, so everyone should at least respect that. And btw War Eagle … 5 years in a row bama … just a month shy of number 6 … and whats that we beat the Gators for the 2nd time ending their winning streak !! thought i’d put alittle of school spirit in my comment too !

  29. The only thing that is going to draw attention to Auburn is their football team. Which I hate! Yet I live in Auburn. Never heard of this story and I agree with Amanda. I do not believe it to be true.

  32. I was a theater major and I remember going down into the prop room in the basement of Telfair Peet by myself. I made a habit of chatting with Sydney, you know, just covering my bases. One night I was leaving the prop room with my hands full. I managed to get the door open by myself, but when I passed through the door, something turned out the lights for me.

  33. You rednecks who get on, of all places, “realhaunts.com”, and talk about football make me sick. Goddam, for once in your life can you think of something else besides the “Iron Bowl” (it should be called the “Grits Bowl” for all you slack-jawed yokels)? I mean, honestly, is your life that empty and meaningless that you have to attach this sort of totemic meaning to what a bunch of KIDS do in a GAME that only lasts a few hours out of the entire year??? Are you thinking, rational, adults or not? Football is worthless for anything other than mindless entertainment, so go out and do something useful with your OWN life, instead of worrying about it.
