Real Haunted House

Follow Me

Detroit, Michigan

If a car is parked on a bridge located inside this park, turn the ignition off, and wait for a few minutes, an old woman in a white dress will appear. She will wave her hand for you to follow her into the woods. No documented account has been made of anyone ever following her.

I believe that they are referring to Belle Isle, I’ve been there many times and every time that I am there with my friends, they try to scare me with that story, but we’ve never actually tried it!

I frequented this site before it went down or for sale over a year ago, and I could have swore that it used to actually say it was Belle Isle. Has the new owner removed information about the exact location of these hauntings for legal reasons or something?

SJSands says:

February 28, 2006, 1:19 am

*Shakes head* It this is true, it’s never happened to me or my dad, and we’re practically in the Belle Isle area every other day. Hell, some times at night I just drive around the area, and i’ve yet to see this woman.

John Pappas says:

March 2, 2006, 9:37 pm

That was the stupidist story that I have ever heard. Who was the nut that put it on the internet? I was born in Detroit and have never heard of any ghost stories. There are no ghost. When your dead thats it. No more. All gone. make room for the next one.

Linda says:

March 3, 2006, 12:37 am

The park is Belle Isle. You are all referring to the “Lady in White.”
Well, I can’t say if it is truly haunted, but I can say that a women in white died there. My brother and a close friend of mine witnessed it.

It was a girl in a white prom dress. Her and her date were on the bridge, stuck in traffic. For whatever reason, she got out out of the car and her boyfriend went after her, she jumped the bridge and as she was about to hit the water, was hit by a boat.

The only reason I know about it is, like I said my brother was there. It was our schools prom as well, and everyone went to Belle Isle after. I was not there, but…again, dont know if it is harunted, but I think it is. My brother and his friend have been back since, and both say it is.

I have never heard of this, but hey you never know it could be true.I personally dont discriminate against ghost stories b/c if i have never witnessed a certain story then how would i know this is not true. so for the people that dont belive this but also have never witnessed it, what makes you able to say it is not true?

John Pappas says:

I would like to try this out but no one would probably do it with me! and yeah what park is it by the way! you never did say that! lol

Deanna says:

June 3, 2006, 11:40 pm

Yeah, I tryed this once, because I heard about it. If you look up old Detriot news papers in a Detriot library, you can read about the girl commiting suicide on the Bridge. She was about 18, I think it said, and She jumped and landed on the side of a boat, breaking her neck. He boyfriend (didn’t disclose name) is supposidly still alive. Sad but true.
When I went and tryed this, it was at 3 am in the morning (the girll was said to have died at 2 something) and I saw something…if it was a girl, I do not know) and then it looked at me, turned, stepped onto the edge of the bride, and fell (jumped) or whatever. it was weird… but it didn’t scare me, nor did the person motion me to follow “her”.

Big Bill says:

June 6, 2006, 5:20 am

About 10 yrs ago while hubby and I were going thru Belle Isle forest,About a mile from the end everything got quiet. It was the end of August my B-day. Birds singing and crickets cheerping, misquitos
buzzing,(window open no air conditioner) Light real bad, told Dan slow down, just as we hit a dip in the road. here comes a deer, red eyes at the side of the car (drivers side)about 10 feet away maybe less. The deer (she) walked slowly, and stopped and stared at us. We were raised country, deers don’t do that unless in a head light beam. She wasn’t paralized by the light, but she sure did paralize us. Told hubby get the heck outa Dodge!

In regards to the question of Grosse Isle hauntings, it has been said that a young lady who refused advances from her boss was pushed from his car catching her dress in the door and ultimately was dragged to her death. This was said to have happened on the road leading from the free bridge.

This is actually a cemetary in Rochester Hills. I have done this before and it scared the daylights out of me. I parked my car in the cemetary with 3 other girls in it and turned off the ignition….wait for roughly 5 mins…a cold breeze, a light flicker, and then…my car began to shake with the slightest whisper “LLLEEEAAAVVVEEEE HHHEEEERRRREEE”.

John says:

March 25, 2007, 5:07 am

I have spent a lot of time on Belle Isle, and have never seen anything like this personally. The people who saw the red eyed deer dont need to worry anymore because all the deer were removed from the island a few years ago. The bridge coming onto the island is definately a no parking zone, I would not sit in a car on that bridge unless you dont mind a big ticket and/or a crackhead slamming into you in the night. The red brick bridge somebody mentioned is off the nature trail loop, if you hike the loop, which isn’t that long, you will cross it. I have caught fish off of that bridge over the years but never a ghost. The story of the girl who jumped off the bridge is old because its happened a lot of times, both men and women have jumped, many of them. Some of them died and I am sure if you went back in the Free Press Archives you could probably find quite a few women who have died on that island wearing white. I dont know if there is anything to the haunting stories, but I have heard lots of them out on Belle Isle, from the casino being haunted to the bridge, in the woods. Everybody seems to feel that the place is haunted somewhere, but I have personally never seen it. If anybody has ever seen anything, or if I can help anyone with finding places on the island let me know

It’s the belle isle bridge near Lake Tacoma. All you have to do is ask someone when you get down there, the bums know all about it and they’ll talk your head off. But if you’re stupid enough to park and get out of your car in the middle of Detroit, it shouldn’t be a ghost that you’re worried about. That’s all I have to say.

Jaehood says:

August 8, 2007, 6:07 pm

whats the real story on the bridge?

Johnny Rongo says:

September 1, 2007, 7:24 pm

I went to that River Walk and I’ll be damned, I saw a flipping ghost. He was large, kind of in charge and he just kind of floated over our truck….I drive a Ford. I was eating ice cream and the fear that came over me was like a middle aged man splashing me with a garden hose on a warm summer day, god, I love middle aged men. Anyway about this ghost, I was scared, so scared that it very well could damage my entire human desire to ever eat ice cream again. I can’t even swim. I was about to slip on my dive gear and ask the ghoslty ghost to teach me to play the drums when before i knew, he zipped away. people don’t say “zipped away” a whole hell of alot in this day and age and longer you know? Correct me if I’m wrong, “zipped away” is a witty line used in the smash film “Dirty Dancing” with P. Swayze? Patrick Swayze for those that live in caves!!!!!!!! Anyway, go to this place with some ice cream and you’ll see Patrick Swayze zipping all over your Ford truck. Nobody puts Baby in a corner.

I have lived here for 28 years never have i heard this
even when I was younger I went out there with this guy to make out never saw nothing …no knocks nor nothing!! And believe me I can tell a ghost cause I have some in my home but they dont bother me and I dont bother them , except for this not quit heavy set
black gentleman that was standing in the middle of my bed that I had to tell him to move cause I couldn’t sleep or roll over. And he left thru the wall. you problaby think I am making this up but I am not … at 4 years old I saw my mother who had passed away that year folding clothes in the back room. I have seen many , as God is my witness I dont want to scare people but ghost only scare you if you are scared of them , dont bother them and they wont bother you . I have seen many, But I am not scared, it’s the living that I am scared of!

MikeS says:

October 8, 2007, 1:47 pm

I don’t think any person in their right mind would be on Belle Isle after dark anyway. I think you have a better chance of being mugged and murdered than seeing a ghost.

October 14, 2007, 12:28 am

The only thing in white you retards ever saw on Belle Isle in Detroit was one of the 13 or 14 white ,(YES ‘WHITE’ ALBINO) white-tailed deer that run rampant all over the Island . My friends & I used to hang out in those woods & on the bridges over the streams through the woods & got chased several times by deer including the albino ones .

Don’t go out there looking for the lady in white at night-time anymore though because a few years back some coyotes as well as an elk or moose whatever bolted the fences at the nature center & roam the island . Not to mention some people like to kill people in Detroit and/or rape them & the woods might be a nice place for them to do that . Besides , I finally picked up that lady in white ghost & took her home . ***** is ugly as hell , but MAN can she cook !!!!!!

I was just down in Detroit at the ren. center for a convention. Sitting up on the 68th floor overlooking Belle Isle. wondering where this bridge is some say inward on the island (wooded area) and some say the main bridge to the island. One the waters ways on the island are to small to be hit by a speeding boat jumping off a bridge which is to low for a boat to go under (if it’s not a row boat). Same with the main bridge it too is to low for this. This is just another URBAN LEGEND. I really doubt that anyone was really there that’s how all urban legends are I heard from friend who’s family member was there who heard the same from another. Most stories are based on some fact but twisted by many story tellers as passed along any lenth of time. I don’t believe there is a lady in white on this island it’s just a spook story to scary teenagers. I’ve never heard this story before and I’ve been in the area for a while. DENNIS

For anyone interested and unfamiliar with Belle Isle, there are several small lakes on the island. The bridge with the white lady is the one by Lake Tacoma on the southwest side of the island by the Peace Tower and conservatory. I lived in Detroit for 21 years and knew the story. It is NOT the bridge leading to the island. I never witnessed any ghost in all of the years that I’ve been there, but there is definitly an evil presence in the wooded area on the other side of the island by the nature center. No mater what time of the day or time of year, I’ve always felt a cold spot and felt like I was in danger at this spot.

Ok, I was at Belle Isle today. I did not see any ghosts, however I found a real weird gravestone type thing. If you park near the wooded area on the East facing road (The old zoo will be directly on your right) and you head over the bridge and follow the river til you reach part of the fence, then follow the fence until you reach a small paved path. From there head west a bit. On your right, near the fence is a Grave marker that has a persons name, it says something like “In memory of blah blah blah 2004″ Its really spooky. The area it was in was filled with water from the melted snow, so I couldnt get too close to it, but I did take a picture, feel free to email me for directions on how to get there. There is a bridge you have to go over that may be the bridge. Here is a map as well of the island.

COME OUT WITH YOUR HANDS UP THIS IS THE POLICE” I then heared a **** some and i then knew it was the lady that followed me back to my house. i then said ” what do you want from me” she screamed pooped and left i had to clean up the poop theirs still a stain from where she had pooped and i still scrub at it to get it to go away but it just stays in the carpet like a tatoo on your butt hole after having a child on a wednesday afternoon wile bowling and riding a bike, pretty painfull it might sound but to me it doesnt it just sounds like pure fright. So i soon went back to the woods to find the woman and it had come to my attention that every time i seen the lady she was pooping or peeing either way she had some type of anoel work going on, so i think thst she had died on the toilet wile poopng and peeing at the same time so its all clear to me now the one thing that i still dont get though. why does she wair:snoop dogg shirt red bra camo socks have a gold tooth half grill elbino eye and her hair up all the time? and where did she get thoughs items?

I just stumbled across this website while searching for the real story of “The Lady In White” of Bell Isle and truth be told all of those ledgends happened. First the one about the native american’s daughter is true my grandfather first told me about it, and then I did some reaserch. . But that happened a very long time ago wayyy before it was Goverment property.. Then it was called Rattlesnake Island here is the story,,,…

The legend of the Snake Goddess of Belle Isle

Legend has it that the Indian maiden still roams Belle Isle as a deer.

Ottawa Indian lore tells of the beautiful daughter of chief Sleeping Bear. Her beauty was so stunning that the Chief kept her hidden from the eyes of young suitors by hiding her near the Detroit River in a covered canoe. The winds, awed by her beauty, blew the covers off the boat and the craft floated down the river. A keeper of the water gates, enamored by her charms, kidnapped the fair maiden and brought her to his wigwam. The winds, angry over his selfish actions, fell upon him, beating him until he died. The winds, sorry for uncovering her beauty, sent her back to her father, Chief Sleeping Bear. The chief, fearful other suitors would follow, placed the princess on an island in the Detroit River and sought the aid of the Great Spirits to protect his beloved daughter by surrounding the island with snakes.

There she runs free through the woods with the gentle winds and wildlife as her companions, since the Great Spirit made her immortal to reign over the island for eternity. The early white settlers first named the island Isle St. Clair and later Rattlesnake Island. Today the land is called Belle Isle. Legend has it that the beautiful Indian maid still roams the woods often mistaken by picnickers as a deer. Her suitor, the keeper of the water gates, is said to roam the forests of nearby Peche Island.

The Belle Isle ghost lady also attracted midnight riders to drive through the scary woods there. This search for a vision of a woman in a long white gown certainly entertained the joy riders and just as certainly irritated the neckers parked along the roads. The white deer scampering through the trees (probably frightened by the walking ghost) also thrilled the gawkers

The Ghost of Belle Isle

The ghost of Belle Isle has a couple different versions to the story, basically put the rumor is that either there is a certain bridge or any bridge on the island will call this spirit, it is said that if you drive onto a bridge on Belle Isle and shut off your engine and wait a few minutes, the spirit of a woman will come out of the woods dressed in white and motion for you to follow her in, one version even mentioned she was an elderly woman. It is also rumored that she has waved to some people just prior to motioning them in., it is also noted that no one has ever actually followed her

Stephanie says:

October 4, 2008, 1:44 am

There are many other women who have died there, its a place that people are murdered all the time but there is one other true story/legend.

The “Lady in White” could also be a woman who died there on her wedding night in 1867. She and her new husband decided to go there their old “make out” spot before leaving on there honeymoon. She decided to journey off for a minuet and when she was gone a little too long her husband went off to look for her. When she returned and found him missing she shot herself in the head. The police found her body there and went looking for the missing husband who they found barely alive 100 yards away, lying in a marsh. Her family soon after bought and moved into what is now known as the white house. They refused to leave her there and when Bell Isle became Government property in 1879 the “White House” was the only part of the island that was excluded. Her family stayed on into the 1900’s. The house is still there now.

About six years ago I went to look for “the Lady in White” with my then best friend Gjoni. He had hyped me all up about the legend which ever lady it was we had no idea. After several attempts to locate her, one evening Gjoni & I along with a friend Carlie found what was to be an abandoned road that went into the woods. You couldn’t tell from the main road it was there but once we ventured down it there was crushed concrete and street signs inside. We saw many apparitions in the woods that night. Later that week Gjoni and I were telling my ex about the ghosts and he didn’t believe us so once again we went looking for her. The moment we got onto the mysterious hidden road we stopped dead in our tracks. Something happened that I would have never believed out of anyones mouth if I didn’t see it for my own eyes… At first all we saw was 3 tiny lights in the middle of the woods. Red, green and blue looked like laser lights. We started to move closer to the light when the entire woods lit up and a lady in a white dress no older than mid 20’s was standing there petting a white deer. Both Gjoni & my ex made a run for it but I stood there dead in my tracks mesmerized by her. I’m not sure how long I was there but they had gone to get their car and pulled up beeping at me.. It was incredible. After Gjoni looked right at me and said if i ever die I’m gonna haunt your ***.. He died one week later in a car accident. I don’t believe it was in any way related to the ghost incident just a horrible accident. Over the next 6 years I went back religiously at least 3 times a week and saw her a handful of times. I also saw a couple other ghosts and have been chased through the woods and almost murdered. Walking around in the woods at 2 in the morning in the Bell Isle woods by myself wasn’t the best idea but I was crazy. This all started in 2001 and I have been somewhat obsessed with Bell Ilse and its lady in white ever since. I promise it is real, but I have recently decided that some things are better left alone.

First of all, Go Red Wings! Second of all after reding all the comments, here’s my conclusion:
*It’s a young woman, probably around 18.
*She most likely jumped, fell, or was pushed off the bridge.
*The park is Belle Isle.
*The bridge is the one going over Lake Tacoma ON Belle Isle.

>It might just be one of those deer they have on the island that could have escaped through the fence(one the white ones).
>The LENGEND about the young Indian maiden be banished to the island, is a real lengend, but like I keep on mentioning, IT IS JUST AN AGE-OLD LEGEND!
>Women seem to be much intuitive than men, so that might explain, why it’s mainly women have posted their experianes.

When does she appear(time and date)?

I’ve always lived right outside of Detroit, so now I can’t wait to find out the best time to go there and try it out!

when i followed the lady in white she pulled the balls out of my pants. she directed the stuff and suddenly i was the man in white. $20 was missing from my wallet. she didnt jump back over the bridge but she got into a 1976 cadillac eldorado. i think it was her pimp. as the car appeared to “float” into the mist i swore i could hear the faint whisper “Beeyotch best got my money” followed by the sound of a slap or smack or something facsimilie. weird. wondering what kind of ghost she was.friendly in my book.

Sleeping Bear’s Daughter
The daughter of an Ottawa chief, Sleeping Bear, was so beautiful even the wind took notice, literally pushing her into an unfortunate romantic entanglement. Seeking to protect his daughter from other unworthy suitors, the Ottawa chief put her on an island surrounded by snakes in the middle of the Detroit River. Legend has it that she still roams on the island, Belle Isle. Depending on who you ask, she takes the form of either a woman in white or a deer.

After reading all the comments everyone has a diff tale and there are 4 stories cluster f*cked in there. See Stephanie’s for the two events that happened. The girl who “jumped off the bridge” and was hit by a boat and killed never happened. And the knocking on the car is a mix between two stories of little girls, one was hit by a car on a rainey night by the bridge to Canada and drug under the car. It is said she knocked on the underside of the car hoping to be heard but was not n died, the other is of a girl who was hit on a street on the west side who knocks on windows when you drive past the spot she was killed. And FYI there is no record of a little girl ever having been hit even on the street the window knocking is supposed to occur on. That was my history of hauntings/ folkore of the beautiful Detroit for yall. enjoy kiddies. And another FYI its supposed to happen on the brige inside of the park by the wooded area, not the entrance.

My friends and I went to Detroit for a vacation. We drove in Abby’s truck in a bridge. Then Nadine told us there was this story about an old woman will appear and bickers you to follow you. Danielle didn’t believe it, and don’t worry we’re both 16. Okay so we waited for a few minutes and then we saw a white figure we were scared but we got out of the truck any way. The old woman waved at us. Danielle fainted, but I snapped her out of it. So the old spirital woman was bickering us to follow her so we did. Then she took us through the woods and to her grave then we saw her body. Then she disappeared into thin air. We wen’t back to Abby’s truck and said ”Who wan’ts pizza”? And we all said ”I do”. That night was scary.

Leigh says:

July 31, 2009, 9:06 pm

I have read about this legend (although never heard it) on other sites and the legend of the woman in white apparently goes back to the 1800s. The teenager who was killed in a deplorable act of unacceptable violence on that bridge is not a legend.
Suspect charged with murder in Detroit bridge death
Whether or not she fell on a boat, I don’t know. The Detroit River is very cold, a mile wide or so and the current is about 25 knots per hour, and there is a very strong undertow, which means if you want to swiftly drown, jump in. Not to mention the impact of hitting the water from the bridge might have killed her or certainly incapacitated her, especially in her state of hysteria and shock. Poor woman. The Coast Guard patrols that river, and she was still miles down the river by the time they could find her body. Read what happened and decide if you want to go out after dark. Plenty more ghosts in safer locales! It’s a very unique park in the river between the US and Canada, but I would not go after 7 pm.

Leigh says:

July 31, 2009, 10:07 pm

Note that in my prior post I wasn’t putting down Detroit – I did mention the park being unique. They have a famous fountain, a conservatory, a museum I think; unfortunately, they had to close the acquarium, which I think was one of the oldest in the country, and the zoo, because, we broke, people. It was just that one poster above (you find it; I’m too lazy and stuff) stated he thought the story of the girl on the bridge was a legend. I was just saddened that people from out of town were going to be dismissing this woman’s horrible and scary death. “oooh fun kooky what a kewl legend. giggle giggle” no, it was a horrible and sad death that should be respected. That made me think of how many ghosts, although entertaining now, were once similar victims who should be respected. The people who tried to save her at risk of their own lives should have a medal. Second, I thought a warning from an old fogey (not really) was in order, b/c there appear to be a lot of young and giggly-type people on this site in general who enjoy risking their lives in, e.g., abandoned mental homes that were shut down for being unsafe, without realizing that freakin HAZ MAT won’t enter those places without full body suits. Ever work in a historic building in Detroit that has had an entire floor sealed off by the EPA for friable asbestos? Um I would like a respirator mask too, please….Finally, to keep this rant on the subj. of ghosts, I have seen two ghosts in that building, in broad daylight, along with numerous incidents of non-ghostly pipes breaking and ratty sewer water and ceiling tiles cascading down on my boss’ desk, not to mention the mysterous white mold growing all over my carpet. bleh. stay out of old buildings when the mold is in bloom. ps cough, cough….ps 2 they have leasing space available! call today! discount if you mention the car that fell through the floor of the rotted parking deck onto another car beneath
