Real Haunted House

USS Alabama BB-60

Mobile, Indiana
By Robin Wright

The USS Alabama, also known as the â??Mighty Aâ?, has found its final resting place in Mobile Bay. Ask some of the visitors of this military attraction and they will tell you that other entities have also found their eternal place in Mobile Bay as well. Since the 680-foot ship was brought home to its namesake in 1965, many have described experiences that make this unique attraction definitely original.

The Alabamaâ??s first two deaths were of men who were in the Norfolk shipyard as she was under construction. She was finished in 1942 and served 37 months without any fatalities due to enemy fire. As for death under friendly fire, however, there were 8 deaths on gun mount #5 when gun mount #9 fired upon them. It seems that the safety feature that was supposed to prevent the turrets from firing upon each other had failed. Grisly descriptions of the destroyed turret included mention of bits of flesh and bone splattered on the turretâ??s inside. The men were completely obliterated; the only thing left of the unfortunate gun commander was his boots.

Many have heard mysterious footsteps coming towards them, only to find no one there. Apparitions have been reported in the cooksâ?? galley and the officersâ?? quarters. The crewmen who died still seem to be stationed at the turret where they drew their last breaths. Late at night, bulkheads fill with popping and tapping noises, and the solid steel hatches will slam shut by themselves. Some have felt as if they were being watched, or sensed an aura of sadness about the ship. One woman who was walking by the sleeping quarters claims to have had her earring snatched from her ear.

It is the official stance of the battleship that the Mighty A is not haunted. They state that no one who works there has ever seen or heard anything that was out of the ordinary. In a written statement to the paranormal team Ghost Hunters Of The South, who tried unsuccessfully to investigate the ship, the park says that of the 160,000 people who have stayed the night in the ship, not one has come to them and mentioned any odd sightings. The only acknowledgment towards otherworldly beings is the story that an angel protected a small child that was lost during a visit of the ship.

Because the memorial park that the USS Alabama resides is open to the public, one can actually go and see for themselves if this ship is haunted. Staying the night, however, is not an option unless you are an employee or part of a youth group. During your visit, remember to nod your thanks to the men on turret #5. Just in case.

The ship is in Mobile, Alabama not Mobile, Indiana. It’s a beautiful part of history but of all the times I’ve been on it I’ve never seen anything unusual. You should go and decide for yourself.

Maybe you should talk to the security guards that stay overnight on the ship. They will be able to tell you what you would like to know.

My husband and sons spent the night on this ship this summer for a cubscout camping trip. Of course, it is virtually impossible to sort out creepy noises when there are 100 screaming little boys around you, but boys were the last below decks for bed and my son has always said he saw a barefooted ghost wandering the decks by one of the guns.

Jessica says:

I think my husband got a picture of an orb by the guns when my sons were playing on the ship at night for their cubscout campout. If you want to see the picture go to

In 1991 I took my children to visit the ship. We were having a wonderful time exploring the ship and trying to imagine being at sea. My husband decided to climb up stairs leading to the navigation area. He and my son went first, my daughter and I behind. My daughter and I became very dizzy and sick. We both had to come back down. I thought it was strange that as soon as we came down we felt fine. I wonder if anyone else has had a similar experience?

Yeah, I went there today at the day, and I didn’t see ghosts, but I did here footsteps, it was a little weird, and I felt scared in some places.

I took my husband and step kids there during spring break. I took many pictures and did not get anything on camera, BUT when we were down in the engine room, I felt chills like someone was touching the back of my neck. When we were in the “jail cell” area of the ship, I felt dizzy and swear I heard someone whisper, “get out”. My husband wanted me to come down and have my picutre taken in one of the cells, but I absolutely had to leave as I didn’t feel welcome there. When in the medical area of the ship, I felt a bit uneasy and dizzy as if something were there, but I am chalking that up to a residual type haunt that happens at that spot on the ship. We have pictures of the kids by the turrets and my husband said that when I took the picture, he nearly fell out of the seat, like someone was puching him out of the way…. just weird…

I am the woman who had her earring snatched from my ear and it is a very true story. As I was stepping out of the officers sleeping quarters near the front of the ship, my earring was snatched from my ear. Because it was a diamond, I wanted to search for it. When we located it, it was in a corner approximately 8-10 feet from where I had been standing and the back was still on it. There was no pain invovled; just a very swift snatching motion and my hair was moved. This was over 20 years ago. During that same visit, the entire time I was on the ship, I could sense someone was watching me and I kept looking over my shoulder but there was never anyone around. Only 6 people were touring the ship that day and because it is so large, we did not run into each other. I also felt a terrible sadness around the hospital area of the ship and around the kitchen/eating areas. My entire story is posted on ghostvillage.

I’ve been to the USS Alabama (folks live right near there) and I have to say I didn’t experience anything totally weird but I did have a strange feeling throughout most of the trip. Just a feeling like “wow all the people that died where I am standing” its actually really amazing(:

OMG! I didn’t know other people have seen apparitions on the ol’ Lucky A! I was standing outside the cook’s galley one day, as far as I am aware the only person on that deck at the time, when all of a sudden I start to hear the murmur of many voices and the sounds of dining utensils on metal trays, etc… I looked up and the galley was full of sailors chowing down and they are all in white t-shirts and have a look of just general misery. Before that it had never occurred to me that life aboard her was probably pretty miserable in the summer with the heat and humidity in the middle of the Pacific in the summer. The vision lasted about maybe two seconds and then it was gone. I was totally in shock. This was in 1990 when I was 28 and just out of the Marine Corps. I never spoke a word about it to a solitary soul.

After touring the ship I felt eyes watching me as I walked through the ships hospital ward and the galley. I really expected to see the men sitting and eating and I heard the rattleing of the trays and pots etc. this was during 1995 visit I have not been back since. I felt people are not wanted there

I stayed aboard one night about 6 years ago with some members of my High School’s ROTC unit. We had about 50 people with us and the ship to ourselves. About an hour after curfew I woke up 2 of my other buddies and we snuck off to go explore the ship late at night. Pretty soon after we were hopelessly lost and we constantly heard tapping noises that seemed to be closing in on us echoing from all around. The sounds kept getting closer and closer til we were basically in a full out panic, we started running and seemed to be furiously chased by something I cannot explain, but funny enough it chased us right back to the berthing area where it stopped quite suddenly. We slipped back into our bunks and never really talked about it ever again or told anyone because of the whole “gung ho” military air of ROTC. I’ll never know what the hell that was or if we were just freaking each other out over nothing, but I truly experienced what I can only explain as pure terror on that ship. A feeling I never want again.

I do believe that the U.S.S. Alabama is haunted. In Sept. of 2007, my husband and I toured the ship. We got some creepy feelings in some areas as if someone were watching. I felt a strong feeling of a presence in the cooks galley, but no visual sighting.
I was completely enamoured by the hospital area..the pharmacy, the sick bay, the ENT office, and the operating room, because I am in the medical field. I took quite a few photos of these areas.Imagine my surprise when I was reviewing my photos 3 months later, and saw an apparition in the Operating Room photo.( This room is surrounded by bars and I took the photo between the bars.) I have not posted this photo on the internet, but I have shown it to 2 ghost hunting groups and one says yes they see something and one says no. Everyone at work that I’ve shown it to are completly blown away by the picture. I can see what is in the picture,so I feel I have all the proof needed to say that the USS Alabama is haunted.

About 5 years ago, my husband and i were on our honeymoon, and were departing from Mobile aboard the Carnival Cruise Ship “Holiday.” We had gotten to Mobile a day early, simply to have time alone before beginning our cruise. We decided to tour the USS Alabama, neither of us had ever been aboard prior to this trip, nor had we heard the history of the deaths aboard the ship. The tour went fine, we took many pictures, however, did not see anything. When got into the lower sections of the ship, close to the jail section, and cook areas, we both started feeling nauseous and dizzy, like we had been breathing bad or uncirculated air. We discussed it, and kind of both surprised that we were both experiencing the same thing, and decided to go ahead and cut the tour early, given the headache we both to seem be developing. Once we were back on top of the ship, everything seemed fine, our dizziness and nausea were gone, just a slight lingering of a headache. Honestly, i did not think anything of our experience until i began reading about other peoples experiences, and now i know that what i have felt was not just stale air…

so i went aboard this ship the other day with my cousins. i´m walking around and i hear this voice from behind. it commanded me to ´take my dirty hands off the siderail´. at first i was spooked but it kept telling me the same thing and i was thinking, ok yeah, i´m gonna take my hands off this rail and i´m gonna fall overboard. i didn´t want my cousins to think i had gone off the deep end, so i didn´t talk back to the voice. but it sure pissed me off. as i was walking off the ship, i muttered ´my dirty hands, huh?´and i stuck one down my pants right quick and touched the handrail real strong like. no ship´s gonna tell me what to do.

I went to this ship on a 6th grade field trip. I went to a very religious school that frowned upon dancing, especially ghosts. After I spent several minutes on the ship, on an unremarkable and partly cloudy day, I went to the lowest decks. It was very weird, to say the least. I had NEVER felt anything like it. I had a very sad sense of dread; not like evil or anger or depression. It felt like something was wrong. Like someone or something was upset and knew that a major mistake had been made. Like they wanted to fix it or something to that effect. It was not a bad feeling, just very alone and sad from a 3rd person perspective. The really weird thing is a girl on the field trip who was obsessed with her new camera took pictures of some kind of item in a glass display case. The pictures, viewed for the first time after we left the lower deck, had a strange image in them. It was glowing, white, partially transparent faces lined up one behind the other behind the other, at least 6 of them. They had mouths and eyes open wide. These faces were to the direct left of the display case, but the picture was taken from the right facing the case almost head on. That was the last year I ever knew the girl, she was very nice and interesting. I don’t hear from her anymore. But as I left the dock, I asked the old man at the gate about this. He acted like he had been working there for a very long time, and he said that things like this happened all the time, and he was not surprised at all. Perhaps this ship, blessed by fate in the war, is the home to something I can’t explain…or maybe just don’t want to.

I feel that I have the sense of feeling spirits, and YES this ship has many. I was overwhelmed with sadness to the point of crying; uncontrolled crying. I wasn’t the only one crying my tears on the USS Alabama.

About 20 years ago my family and I toured the USS Alabama. Somehow, we got separated from one another. My son was with me and we got terribly disoriented and lost on board while looking for my husband and daughter. We opened the door to the mess hall and also saw a bunch of men in white t shirts and uniform pants sitting at tables eating and someone serving food. When I opened the door everyone got quiet and starred. It reminded me of a scene in “The Shining”. I don’t know if it’s haunted or if those men work on the ship but there must have been about 50 of them. It scared me so bad we started running to find our way off this creepy ship.

I was filming for Facebook and a shadow figure passed the door I was in the upper balcony type thing and the door was in a place where you cant go. So i don’t know what it was but im going back in like 3 weeks or so to see if i can get the same activity with my brother and i was looking online for more info. This site where you could tour the battleship grounds there where 3 men in Navy Whites but there where see through. So hopefully i can get answers. I know they don’t let private groups come and instigate the ship.
