Real Haunted House

THE HOUSE THAT YOU ARE ALL TALKING ABOUT IS CALLED SWEANEY HOUSE THE FAMILY HAD I TBULIT IN THE LATE 1800’S THE ONLY ROOM TO HAVE ANY CORNERS WAS THE MASTER BEDROOM UPSTAIRS. THE HOUSE IS LOCATED IN BULL VALLEY. YOU USED TO BE ABLE TO VISIT THE HOUSE UNTIL THE VILLAGE HALL MOVED IN. ANYWAY THAT STORY WAS THAT MR. SWEANEY WAS AN ODD LITTLE MAN THAT BELIEVED THAT HE COULD KEEP THE SPRITES OUT IF THEY HAD NO PLACE TO HIDE, ALSO ON THE TOP FLOOR THERE IS A DOOR THAT LEADS TO NOTHING. IT IS TOLD THAT MR.SWEANEYS YOUNGEST CHILD DIED IN ONE OF THE BEDROOMS AND THIS DOOR WAS PUT IN TO LET THE CHILD VISIT AND TO KEEP OTHERS OUT. IT IS REPORTED THAT LIGHT WILL GO OFF AND ON, COMPUTERS GO CRAZY STUFF LIKE THAT. IF ANYEHING THIS BULIDING HAS A TRUE HIST. TO IT AND THERE ARE TOURS THAT GO ON THERE. HOPE THIS HELPS

The owner’s name wasn’t Sweaney, it was Stickney. I’ve been in that place. VERY UNEASY feeling, immediately. I felt an unmistakable presence following me up the stairs and around the ballroom area. Temp. dropped several degrees.

I used to take my kids and their friend driving past this place aroud halloween. Over and over again..WE would get so freaked out it wasn’t funny. Across the street alittle up the road, I think, was another place everyone called “the devil’s house”. Now, that was a realllllll scary place…It had a tall fence around it. There were two driveways in..Once my son and his teenage friends backed up the one driveway as far as they could, when people came out in long gowns, and pentagram necklaces, and hoods, towards them…Other things happened, but I can’t remember now…But they were scared TOO DEATH!!!!!!!!!!!!! All teenage boys…All, too cool to be afraid…But they came home screaming…one was crying….Something happened..Another time we were driving past the devil’s house, and the house with no corners, after several times, the police stopped us…Asked what we were doing, I told them, I was driving my kids past these places to scare them..They loved it….The police made me leave…I said, why? I’m not doing anything wrong, not hurting anyone….They started telling me what all they were going to charge me with if I didn’t leave..starting with a light out over the license plate…Just silly things to get me to leave…They kept saying, “it’s just not safe”. So we finally did go home..This was about 17 years ago. We lived in McHenry..Believe me, it’s scary….The road itself is scary…We did alot of this for years…Not always at halloween…Pretty much any time someone needed to get a jolt….

I have heard about this house all through highschool, almost a complete rumor until I was old enough to drive. One night after work me a couple of friends and a girl from work who knew where the house was took the drive out to see it. When we finally got there you could feel something in the air it just wasn’t right at all. We were outside just standing and looking trying to gain the courage to go over to it, then as my friend started to walk there was a light almost like a candle but didn’t flicker like a candle. With the light we could see shadows and almost made out a figure on a wall. Just as we started to get the courage again to walk up there was a slam and we could hear voices telling us to leave now. So we obliged without hesitation!

As far as the other house near this one the “devil’s house” I hear stories of how at 3:00 AM you can hear screams chanting and through a window you can see a wall turn red with blood. This entire area is not for the weak hearted. There is something that happened here you can tell as soon as you turn down the road. My advice is to stay away and just read about this house.

My friend took me to see this house. I was told that the wife was wiered and that when she married mr sweany she requested that the house he build for her have no corners to keep ghost and demons out. One night mr. sweany had to go away on a buisness trip and when he returned his wife was gone. He looked all through the house and there was one door left open and that was the closet in their bedroom and he realized that there was a corner in the house in the closet. Supposedly the wife was taken through the closet. Its all old wives tale because it is actually a ghost story that my mom read to me when i was a kid, and it was called the house with no corners.

susan says:

December 30, 2006, 2:50 am

To get the story correct,,the Stickney house was suppose to be built with no corners because the Mr. and Mrs. where mediums. They held seances, and they talked to the dead.No corners so the spirits would leave and not linger behind.Unfortunately,,the house couldn’t be built with no corners,it had to have 1.In that one corner is where Mr.Stickney was found dead.No joke!!!Its on Cherry Valley Rd. in Bull Valley. And right down the st. is the ‘devil’ house.I once drove half way down the back driveway, just enough to see the house, and I was too scared to go farther, and some man followed me in his car after that!!!It’s a spooky little town where weird things happen!!!

I grew up in McHenry…so I was in the schools during the 80″s. Somewhere in Bull Valley there used to be a haunted attraction called the “Bull Valley Scare”. Is the Stickney house the one that I’m thinking about? Man this yearly halloween haunted house attracted lines upon lines of people. Does anyone no of this?
I would love to take my kids now that they are old enough…that is if Bull Valley still has the scare.

I live very close to this house.
And I went there with a few of my friends last night.
We had been on an exploration all night, not expecting to see anything..
But that house…
Was where the most had happened..
As we were pulling up we saw a light in the top middle window.
We turned the car off to see if the light was just a reflection of our headlights.
The light was still there.
My 2 friends had gotten out of the car, leaving me and my other 2 friends behind.
They walked over to the front of the house and took pictures with MY CAMERA.
They booked @$$ back to the car almost crying because they had heard people running towards them. [MIDDLE OF FALL, SO KEEP IN MIND THERE ARE LEAVES ON THE GROUND.]
I have pictures…
E-mail me if you would like to see everything we saw.

I promise you-it’s worth it.

Real creeeeepy, cuz we kept hearing noises and nothing was there. Then, like two minutes later, we saw this house. Looked haunted, didn’t know what to think…

If you all are talking about the round house with the creek in the front. I went there after the Blair Witch Project was released and it is creepy. Statues and monuments behind the house throughout the woods. This house was a hiding point for the vampire cult killings from Kentucky.

Me and my friends are lame and have nothing better to do than go out ghost hunting somtimes. So naturaly we went to the Stikney masion one night. When we got there this really cool cop let us in and gave us a tour. We have most of it on film. Unfortunately he would not comment on tape but the things he said off tape confirmed some of the supperstitions. After he left we walked around for a bit and took some pictures video and sound bits. We got nothing good on film but the flashes on all of our cameras simontaniosly went out and strage orbs apeared in the top right rear window of the house. The audio we got had what sounded like voices but it wasnt really solid enough to say for sure that it was any sort of spirt. I strongly advise going there yourself maybe youll get luckie like us and have some wierd things happen.

I too grew up in Mch.county in the 80’s. Bull Valley scare was on Mason Hill Rd. I worked in it all thru highschool. It was awesome fun! I’m sorry to say it is no longer around. I have been by the 2 houses on Cherry Valley rd. The one I was told was the Devil house was actually the house of Chester Gould (of **** Tracy fame, but I’ll tell you it is really creepy out there in the dark of night.

In the late 70’s my friends and I use to go out to the Stickney house and the house you are calling the Devil house. The house that everyone is calling the Devil house was really occupied by Devil Worshipers and you could go there at a certain time of the day/evening and you could see them all in the long gowns lined up along the road…if you were lucky enough to get far enough down the driveway wich back then had dead animal carcuses hanging from the tree’s along the drive you could see them doing there ceromonies and as for the Stickney house you could go there at night and in one of the bedrooms upstairs you could see a soft glow in the window with that of a small childs silouhette in the window.

My Father went there in the late 70’s and alot after that we still go there to this day, and Stickeney Mansion is not the only Creepy place on that road..There use to be this Place 2121 cherry valley lane and it use to have this gate in the front of it so one day my father was going there with his buddies and he set the gate on fire not even 2 minutes later he went back and there were no burn marks at all.. There is another time him and my mother went down there and as soon as they got like 2 feet past the gate this car appears out of nowhere and starts chaseing them so they pull into this church and there was no car to be seen, They tried to find that church again but never did…. They now turned 2121 into nature trail but I did the ouja board and It says that there is a little creek there and I asked it what about the creek it said 666……I get the chills to this day just going there..

About 8 years ago I took my daughter on that same road and stop at that devils house where there was a huge fence in front. Well I got out my car and went up to the fence to see if I could see anything. Well I did there were rusty farm like equipment look like very sharp objects everywhere. I heard that they put them there so you would stay away because if you did get past the tall fence you would run into these sharp objects and really hurt yourself.I lived in crystal Lake for over 20 years so I have heard lots of stories about it. My older brother went out there with a few buddies and he claims that he saw about 6 to 8 devil whorshipers walking on the side of the road around midnight. He said that they never looked up they just kept looking down with their black hooded robes.

About 15 years ago I went to BUll valley for the purpose of checking out all the hype of the stories I had heard. That rounded house that is now a police dept was there but boarded up, all but one window towards the back, up stairs was a light on we sat in the car staring at it and the light flashed and went out. HELLO no power in a boarded up house just felt soo creepy. That whole road out there.

I grew up in McHenry County, and my Mom use to drive us down Cherry Valley Rd. to get spooked out around Holloween time. The Stickney Mansion was empty for a long time (1980’s). It is true about Mrs. Stickney being a medium, and that spirts would hide in the corners. It is a stange place. The property down the rd a bit was owned by Devil worshipers, a cult of them. There was a huge wooden fence surrounding the property, and through the trees you could see a bunch of little huts, or small houses. I know that the other residents on the street would see them walking down the road, in the middle of the night, in dark robes, and chanting. Very scary! It is so scary because at both locations on this street, here were people messing around with truly evil things.I am going to take my husband and kids down Cherry Valley Rd. this weekend, to get us in the Holloween spirt!

Lifetime local resident says:

October 31, 2008, 11:48 am

Yes it’s true of the house w/ no corners. But what’s NOT true is the “devils house” & ppl who were devil worshipers…it was just an old house set back in their woods down a long drive way. That house is NOT haunted & there was NO devil worshiping. MANY stories have been told about Bull Valley & the “Bulll valley monster” that I grew up hearing creepy stories of. Every one needs a good scare every once in a while…all the stories are fish stories nothing more.
As far as the house w/ no corners goes. It was infact built to keep spirits out. Mr. Stickeny was a very superstious person & it is believed that spirits will manifest through corners & the reason he built the house w/ no corners was to keep the spirits OUT NOT to invite them in.

ALSO ppl who “claim” to see blood on the walls down the “devils house” driveway are liars…no such thing. it was not a sacrificial place, simply a home. No deaths, murders, or sucides were ever there nor ever happened…Tell a good story ppl , but get ur facts straight :)

Ive lived in McHenry almost sence the day I was born. I went to both of those houses plenty of times in high school and nothing ever happened and I never saw nething. Ill admit the stories might be true but from experiance the tales might not be. To be honest dont you think if there was truth that could be justified the oprah would have done the story while she was living not a block away from the house with no corners? I listened to the stroies for years and thats what made me go there in high school..I even walked down the driveway once…Il admit I was scared so as soon as I saw the porch I ran the other way…but nothing happened…as a matter of fact aside from the light on in the house thats all I saw.

Louise says:

October 13, 2009, 11:13 am

My aunt took me and my sister to drive past this place to try to creep us out. It worked when we were little, but my grandmother told me that a lot of the things you hear are just stories that the “well off” people told so that working class folks wouldn’t move into their area. The house with no corners is true, the owners were into seances and held parties there. The devil house, not so much. Some are stories, some may be real.

Sharon K says:

October 20, 2009, 8:24 pm

A few things. The house with no corners is the Stickney Mansion and is now the Bull Valley Police Department. If you are looking for corroboration on your stories about it being haunted, talk to the police chief, Norb Sauers and he will verify it. Cold spots, lights coming on and off and footsteps where none should be. My husband actually had one of the balusters from the rail off the second floor balcony and I refused to have it in my house. I actually burned it because it made me feel so uncomfortable. As far as the devil house, I personally knew the man who lived there, Fred Boger. Fred built that house himself and he was an architect, not a devil worshiper. He was a very private person and erected the gate to protect his privacy…not to set booby traps for unsuspecting trespassers. The little huts that someone mentioned were actually little pagoda’s in his garden by the pond. I have been in his house and never once saw anything to lead me to suspect that he was anything other than what he was…an eccentric old man who liked his privacy. Fred passed away several years ago and the house was torn down and the land subdivided. The acreage is now called Boger’s Bog and is a nature trail. The gates were not gates to his property…the actual driveway was off of Cold Springs Rd. In the late 70’s or early 80’s, vandals did throw Molotov cocktails onto his gates on Halloween and burned them. If I am not mistaken, the vandals were caught.

RWM says:

January 5, 2010, 3:44 pm

Sharon K is exactly right, I also knew Fred as a kid and as an aduld use to spend winter over at that place cutting firewood for him. I have been in his “house” which was more like a glorified lean to. the house had caught fire and Fred was placed in an old folks home a few years back, he died there and yes the county had taken over the property “Bogers Bog”, I find it so silly when I hear the “devil Worshiper: stories, but I just laugh a little on the inside and brush it off, I have actually taken friends over to the house to meet Fred when we were kids….He really thought nothing of it.

all the people that say this ain’t true about the house with no corners and the devil worshipers house ya’ll dont know what you be talking about because its true. A family member of mine has lived there her whole life and she has told me and yes i live in a southern state.

Stephanie says:

Hubby and I visited the Stickney Mansion a couple of years ago just to check it out. We weren’t allowed to go upstairs, but I didn’t get a creepy feeling at all. It was just very old and interesting. However, if the original owners were into seances, there’s no doubt that they opened doors that they shouldn’t have, and yes, that can cause stuff to happen.

Carol says:

August 14, 2010, 9:11 pm

I first visited the Stickney house in the early 1970s , stuff for teenagers. The house emitted this strange feelings that you were not welcome a second time. Of course, the house sat on the bluff overlooking the valley at that time. Andoddly, one first basement window on the left as you were looking at the house, had bars on the basement window. The only window in the entire house to have bars on it. At that time, it was run down however , it was still a magnificent house with a 180 degree bowed in entry door.
Sadly to say, with the house now sitting on the floor of the valley, it has a neglected appearance due to lack of upkeep. It is no longer foreboding. Perhaps it was the land on which it originally built that emitted the unwelcome feeling, a sense of terror.

Lee says:

September 21, 2010, 2:50 pm

I used to live in bull valley and drive past the stickney house all the time, it really isn’t that scary looking. My friend’s dad did work on it while they were changing it to the police station and grown men ran out of the basement bc they heard footsteps and I know for a fact that the cops won’t stay there past a certain time. The stories that go around are crazy, I heard more than 1 story. And also the devil’s gate is right down the road, I used to babysit next door.

Allison says:

September 25, 2010, 1:41 pm

My friends and I went to the house with no corners back in the mid 1990’s on Halloween. We drove around the back of the house and it was creepy. We then turned right and went down the road to another house that was kind of at the end of the road of to the side. Not sure if that is the other house people keep mentioning, but we got our car stuck and a spotlight flashed on us and it was crazy. Nobody ever came out of the house, we just got unstuck and left.

Jennifer says:

April 2, 2011, 12:07 am

The house you are all referring to is the Stickney Mansion. It was built in the 1800s and there are reports that the original owner was deep into spiritualism and made sure there were no 90 degree angles because supposedly spirits can enter through the corners and hide in them. There are reports as well that two of the owners and their families of the Stickney Mansion committed suicide. I have only found one of these claims to be confirmed. Also, the master bedroom is not the room with the corner, it is the room that is holding the water heater. I have been in the home several times and it is the most uncomfortable place I have ever been. Things move or disappear, it feels as though you are being followed or watched, strange noises and shadows… You must get permission from the Bull Valley police department to investigate which is not an easy task. Unless you arent afraid of things that go bump in the night, stay clear.

This place isn’t haunted.. I’ve been inside it, and the only think scary was the police chief saurs.. who is now dead.. so if it’s being haunted by anyone now, it’s probably him.. trying to ruin peoples lives even after his is over. Have a good day.
