Waverly Hills Sanitorium for Tuberculosis
(Also known as the Waverly Hills Sanitarium for Tuberculosis)
During the early twentieth century, Louisville had the highest tuberculosis rate in the country, so a hospital was opened. Many of the patients remained here until they died. The dead bodies were pushed down tunnels to the bottom of the hill where they were then carried off and buried. After the vaccine for tuberculosis was discovered, the hospital became a nursing home that is also now closed. Now, an elderly woman may be seen running from the building with bleeding wrists and ankles; she begs for someone to get her out of that place. Many have also seen people peeking out of third floor–the residential ward–windows.

I know it’s $20 for a 2 hour tour, $50 for 4 hours, and $100 for 8 hours(overnight. You Have to have at least 20 people to have the place to yourselves. You have to get a hold of someone ahead of time to make reservations. They stay really booked.

They only let you on one floor during the haunted house. The rest of the year the tour takes you all over.

I have recently worked at Waverly Hills for the haunted house. The first weekend I worked in the graveyard and felt someithing tug at my pant leg. then I heard a voice but I could’t understan what it said. The secaond weekend I brought my friend Natasha to work i the Rope room where you have to swing from a roep and scare people. Our strobe light turned off 5 times. We felt like something was watching us the hole time. I saw a woman walking down the hallway but I could see through her. she had long hair and she was skinney.

Ok, first of all to who ever posted the actual haunting regarding Waverly Hills: There is NO such thing as a TB vaccine…If you would like to know more about TB please look at the CDC (health dept) website…
As far as Waverly Hills, it was indeed built for treatment of TB patients…As far as the tunnels which lead up the hills, they were ORIGINALLY built for use of bringing up food, supplies and staying warm when coming up the hill in harsh weather during the winters…Later on when death tolls were unbelievable, caused from TB, these tunnels were used to take dead bodies down to the bottom of the hill to keep the “morale” of the patients…
Yes there were some terrible experiences done in this facility not to be bizarre or cruel but in hopes of actually treating and curing TB…They even did procedures such as lung lobectomys (cutting out partial to full lobes of the lungs), inflated balloons in the lungs, to acutally causing pneumothorax to one lung (collapsing the lung) which allowrd one lung to rest at a time….
As far as slitting the dead bodies from groin to the top of sternum to drain the blood because it was “diaseased blood” (in the actual hospital) is a bunch of ****…they had a seperate building which was a building for embalming…although the actual hospital did have an actual morgue…
Later on down the road when TB diagnoses decreased the TB hospital was turned into a nursing home…Unfortunately this nursing home was very neglectful and therefore was actually shut down in the very early 80’s by the state of KY…
Supposively it has been determined a pregnant unmarried nurse hung herself in room “502″ on the 5th floor, but I am not so sure that is true either…Supposively another female threw herself from a 5th floor window, that has never been confirmed either….
As far as all these goofy stories regarding the hospital being a “crazy peoples home” is untrue…I can only guess that rumor started because often, nursing homes contain folks with alzheimers…

ive been to whs back before any gaurds where there.me and freind would go up there and just hang out at the top of the tunnel. and yes the building is haunted. i have seen mary staring out one of the 3rd story windows and have heard screams and other noises from the building, like doors slamming and talking when no one in our group was speaking. If you want a good scary time go to waverly hills it will be worth every penny you pay for a tour.

I would like to know how visit this hospital. My grandmother used to work in G.B. Cooley (TB) Sanitorium, in West Monroe, La. As a child I used to go with her at times, and stay in the safe zones, and in the kitchen area. Plus, I would like to see what the atmosphere is like there.( Never experience a place that is supposed to be haunted) Could you please send me information on rates, times, and dates I might visit….Thanks.. I called waverly hills a few days ago, they pulled the all night stays for the year so there no longer avliable. They have a two hour paranormal guided tour but you watch a film on the place for the first 30 minutes that counts for the tour so really your only going on a tour for an hour and thirty minutes

I grew up not even a 5 minute drive from this place. 2 of my aunts worked at the building when it was a nursing home. My uncles and cousins work the huanted house every year, and I have been inside the place several times since I was a teenager. I have heard wierd noises ecspecailly at night. Me and my friends used to sneak into the place all of the time. I have been on the roof and in the body chute. The place definatly has a wierd vibe. I have seen distant wierd things, but I can’t say I have seen anything like a ghost or a orb up close.
The history of the place is worth seeing it alone. I wouldn’t pay for the tour or the overnight, but I have done them all several times for free. For anyone who hasn’t been there, I would say it is worth the money.

A friend and I are planning a trip to Waverly later this month. I have researched as much as possible about this particular building and would advise anyone to read up via internet about this awesomely haunted place and other homes, etc…in our great state of Kentucky. To the crass people who wrote rather disgusting things in this website, please take your filth elsewhere. Children may be reading this.

Me and some friends visited Waverly on 6/30/07. When you pull up at the entrance it is an awsome sight to see. It looks old and kind of spooky. The 2 hour tour was great. I recomend that everyone go to this place. If you like anything that has to do with paranormal and history combined, you’ll love it as much as we did. Please go visit you’ll love it.
