Waverly Hills Sanitorium for Tuberculosis
(Also known as the Waverly Hills Sanitarium for Tuberculosis)
During the early twentieth century, Louisville had the highest tuberculosis rate in the country, so a hospital was opened. Many of the patients remained here until they died. The dead bodies were pushed down tunnels to the bottom of the hill where they were then carried off and buried. After the vaccine for tuberculosis was discovered, the hospital became a nursing home that is also now closed. Now, an elderly woman may be seen running from the building with bleeding wrists and ankles; she begs for someone to get her out of that place. Many have also seen people peeking out of third floor–the residential ward–windows.

it is R. 205. A nurse in the 1920s or 30s was pregnant out of welock. she performed self-surgery and got rid of the fetus. the people found the a still-born fetus about a mile or so away from the hospital. after that she hung herself on the lamp pole in the fifth floor bathroom.

I just moved from Louisville and have always been into paranormal activity. Only 21 years old I have been researching Waverly for 5 years now. I am completly blown away by the sanitorium. There is alot of history to this building. It is currently under recreation. They are offering tours to the public and all the money goes towards the process. Alot of people like the scary look but the building is in bad shape. It is becoming the beautiful building it once was. Make no mistake about it though, if you vinture in there not beliveing in ghost or paranormal lifeform. You will by the time you leave. The presence felt in that building is amazing. Shadows moving when nothing is there, Tugging on your cloths as you walk through the isles, the hairs tanding on your neck, the sudden tempiture changes, the erie sounds, it’s a uniqe experence. Some people have even clame to have seen apparations up there. Me, Myself I’ve never seen what I would call a ghost face to face. I have been walking and seen the ball roll past me that they leave in the building for the child to play with. I havent whitnessed the “shadow people.” If you do visit, take a camera or cam corder. You are almost garaunteed to catch something. Tons upon Tons of orbs most certainly. I have a picture standing outside of the notoroius room 502 where a nurse had hung herself. In the window about the door way you can see what appears to be two faces. There is no screen in this window or nothing noticable that would cause anything at all to apear in this window frame. Much less two faces. I also have another photograph looking out through a empty room on the 5th floor that leads to the rooftop where there is cleary without a doubt in my mind a full body aparation. I well built man wearing a sleveless shirt. Amazing photgraph. He is standing in front of a stack of twobyfours. That is my best pictures from there. I have seen so many amazing shots and things caught on film at this place. it has been featured on fox worlds scariest places (which is rigged but gave the place some major attention), and also has been investigated by (Ghost Hunter’s) TAPS. Who agreed that Waverly is haunted. It is a site to see. If this is what floats your boat that Waverly is deffinite place to visit.

I live five minutes from waverly hills sanatorium. My best frinds grandfather owned it before the people that own it now.We had parties, weddings, family reunions, and at the end we used it for a paintball place. This is no lie,we even shut ourselves in the morge dead body slips just to get scared. We dug a hole where they used to send the bodys to to be burned.I walked all the way down the body shoot to the point they sealed the actual incenerator off.We plasticed off a room on the second floor and brought in kerosene heaters so we could spend the night in there, you talk about spooky. We played hide and seek in the dark when you couldnt see your hand in front of your face. This was a great experience and i will never forget it. there is alot of stories about waverly one i will never forget is about a very young girl. her mother got tb but did not wanted the daughter to find out. well her mother died. a nurse can to the little girl and told her that her mother had passed away. well the little girl didn’t take the news very well. the little girl grabed the pencil and stapped the nurse in the eyes. now it has been told you can see the little girl with her bloody pencil walking down the halls yelling for her mother. which she never finds. it also said you can see her on the third floor wondering around trying to find her mother and you can see her looking out the third floor window. now i never want to cross her.

Myself and my wife and several co-workers have been there on two tours. one in the daylight and one nightime tour. The place was very impressive(more so at night of course).I was in the back of the tour group on purpose and while we were going by the rooms on th second floor I heard like feet shuffling on the floor like someone was walking.I tried to get a picture where I heard the sound but my camera would not shoot. So I tried my camcorder and did not see anything.I also heard someone groam very lightly. Some of the tour guides and my wife also saw shadows at the same time.I could not go back this year due to my wife being pregnant. But we are planning to go back every year when we can.I recommend this place to anyone interested in the paranormal.

I have been to Waverly Hills only once. During this summer, I went to a concert there. I’ve noticed a couple of interesting things about this place. There are gargoyles on the roof of the building. Gargoyles were used in times past to guard against evil spirits. One, there were windows for every room that I could see, even though I was outside my entire stay there. I researched into this. This was attributed to the fact that a once common belief of a cure to tuberculosis was to provide plenty of fresh air and sun. Heating blankets were in major practice during the winter. If I am not mistaken, I believe that is why heating blankets were created. Also, from what I read, I found a brief history of the place. I may be wrong on some of this stuff, since I am reciting from memory here. It used to be a TB hospital in the early 1900’s. It was then purchased by a private owner after the cure for tuberculosis was found. The owner apparently wanted to have the building condemned, much to the dismay of the city of Louisville. Since it was considered a piece of history, though, the building had to be run down into horrible shape. Therefore, the owner payed people to vandalize the building. After a few years, he gave up. It was turned into an insane asylum afterwards. The asylum was closed down due to patient abuse. That, I believe is why Waverly Hills is ‘haunted.’ Also, I noted a strange coincidence. The area code for the majority of Louisville’s phone numbers is 502. That is the room number where supposedly the most suspicious activity is observed.

In June, I called to get the rates for the tour and was told the following:
$20 for two hours
$50 for four hours
$100 for eight hours
The tours start at midnight, and you must have your tickets paid for at least one month in advance. The only month they do not offer tours, is October because of the haunted house.

I was with my daughter and went there for their halloween haunted house that they have every october. I had taken a few pictures with my video camera later I ran the video at home there next to my daughter and friends was a small boy holding what seemed like a rubber red ball . when I called my friend over to see it. it was not in the picture so maybe I was just thought I saw something but it sure scared me since the boy eyes was looking straight at me as though he was watching me.

Nice building, too bad the “Celebrity Ghost Hunt” had to cheapen the whole thing, with really bad visual effects of fake shadows etc..
There has never been interaction, communication, photographs, any real proof, of anything beyond the reality, that we are living organisms that die, and will cease to exist once we’re gone.
I have been spiritual my whole life, now, the world, universe, all makes complete sense to me, as a strong atheist.
The absence of any deity, spirit, God, of any kind, explains everything in the world. From the mis-classification of miracles, when good things happen. To the reasons that praying children suffer, which spirituality answers with – “God Works In Mysterious Ways” and -”God has a plan for all of us”.
God answering the prayers of someone wanting a promotion, and not answering the prayers of a young child that wants to live, and not suffer, and die, from Leukemia, is not a “Plan” or “Mysterious”. Its proof that life is random, and we’re on our own.
Some unfortunate history happened in this building, as in every hospital, war field, concentration camp, or ground zero in NYC
All of these places are silent, with OUR memory of the past, being the only resonance.
I have beckoned the spirits of my grand parents, my father, and several friends whom have past, I have willingly appealed to all of the spirits in the world, that could hear me, even the devil himself, to do, or say anything.
There is nothing but silence, and now, complete understanding.. not “Emptiness” or sorrow, just no more “Searching for answers”
There is a nice old building, that I hope you restore, and enjoy, while you’re alive, create good things, happy experiences. The past is silent, there is nothing residual but your own thoughts.
Enjoy your lives. and good luck with this building.
