Waverly Hills Sanitorium for Tuberculosis
(Also known as the Waverly Hills Sanitarium for Tuberculosis)
During the early twentieth century, Louisville had the highest tuberculosis rate in the country, so a hospital was opened. Many of the patients remained here until they died. The dead bodies were pushed down tunnels to the bottom of the hill where they were then carried off and buried. After the vaccine for tuberculosis was discovered, the hospital became a nursing home that is also now closed. Now, an elderly woman may be seen running from the building with bleeding wrists and ankles; she begs for someone to get her out of that place. Many have also seen people peeking out of third floor–the residential ward–windows.

I lived on East pages for like 10 years (the same road as the t.b hostpiatal) and my friends and i used to sneak up there and hang out in the summer and we heard and seen all kinds of crazy stuff! doors slamming, glass breaking, people talking, people running, walking up and down stair cases, blood on the walls and floors, old operating instruments…. it’s like an abanded hospital that people go to when your not going to live! its messed up. I don’t go there anymore, I have seen things and felt things touch me and heard things that are so undescribale….. people just don’t have a clue…. they also have tours and stuff that you can pay $20 to go see but ive been threw more when i was there alone!…. besides i practically lived right next door to the place….. it’s creepy as hell… I’ll never go back!

I have not been to Waverly Hills yet, we keep calling and calling and they are booked up. We are ghost hunters and have gotten some great pictures of ghost. We can not wait to get there and spent at least 4 hours checking out the place. We have heard some awesome stories and seen some awesome pictures from this place. I live here in Ky. and have found some very interesting places to find ghost. I am hoping to get some great pictures myself. The personal experience is the best.

I’ve read a lot of the comments and I think it’s wonderful to see so many people interested in the hospital.
I’ve been three times for evening tours (10:00p – 12:00p) and twice to the Paranormal Convention. The tours were extremely informative and were conducted by the Louisville Ghost Hunters Society (www.louisvilleghs.com). All three of the tours I’ve been on were lead by Dale Clark. He did a wonderful job of telling us the history of the construction of the building, the daily activities that took place on each floor when the hospital was in service, and the functions of the rooms that we were touring.
Of course, he also told us about the purported paranormal activity in each area as well, but the LGHS and the WHS Historical Society both are very adamant about hoping that everyone learns to appreciate just what an amazing building this is and what a shame it is that the previous owners (prior to the Mattingly’s) let the building progress into such a state as it was at the time that the Mattingly’s purchased it.
I learned a lot about the building and gained a whole new respect for the structure (in addition to the simple but genuine awe that you feel just looking at it from the outside).
I had one paranormal experience there that I will never, ever forget, and I saw things on two of the three visits that will stay with me forever. I’m thankful that I was able to experience it, and hope to get to go again soon.
I know that LGHS does not do the tours anymore (at least not the last time I checked with Tina Mattingly), but if you’d like to get an account of the building and some of the paranormal activity that occurs there, I’d suggest visiting the LGHS website and e-mailing Dale Clark or Jay Gravatte (Jay was featured on the “Scariest Places on Earth” segment). They are both VERY knowledgable about the building and it’s history and they don’t embellish or sensationalize it – they just tell you what’s there.
I hope that anyone that wants to see it is able to arrange to be in a tour, because it’s something that stays with you – whether you have an experience or not – the building is mesmerizing.
Enjoy!!

We went last year, my boyfriend took his camera and every picture had white orbs in it. Freaky stuff. When we got inside he was going to take pictures of the haunted house but his camera wouldn’t turn on. I didn’t start working again until we were back in our car. The lines are long…like hours but it’s one of the longest haunted houses I’ve ever been to. It’s worth it.

We have done 2 investigations of Waverly. It is indeed haunted. We observed the shadow people both times. You can go to our website at http://www.kapsonline.com and click on investigations to see the Waverly evidence.

Waverly Hills is the coolest place in Louisville!
Iwish I could live there because I want to learn all I
can about ghosts. If I had a chance to spend the night in room 502 I would do it without any second thoughts!

502 isn’t the spookiest place, anywhere on the 3rd or 4th floor is though. We are booking 2 back to back 8 hour overnights for the early part of next year. This will be our 3rd trip.

I went to Waverly Hills last year. I think room 502 is not scary it’s actually just a bathroom, the nurse hung herself in the hallway just outside of the R#502. we did get a picture of a mans face in the window. There is no such woman who runs from the building who supposedly slit her wrist. I personal think the most haunted places are #1. the shadow people were we stood down the hall in pitch black and everybody kept saying that there were shadows all around us, but we weren’t moving. On the walk back I saw a showdow person walk past the door way as he/she was walking right beside me (It was much taller than me) and disappear behind the wall. #2. the roof top were the little boy plays, which I did catch a bright orange orb where there were no windows to reflect from. Some advice don’t walk down the “body chute” because the only experience you’ll get is the pain shooting through your legs. If your expecting a 2 hour tour remember you’ll be in the building for an hour to an hour and a half because of the video you “have” to watch in the laundry building outside. Bring extra money because you can purchase suvaniers and flashlights in the laundry building before and after the tour.
