Real Haunted House

Waverly Hills Sanitorium for Tuberculosis

Louisville, Kentucky

(Also known as the Waverly Hills Sanitarium for Tuberculosis)

During the early twentieth century, Louisville had the highest tuberculosis rate in the country, so a hospital was opened. Many of the patients remained here until they died. The dead bodies were pushed down tunnels to the bottom of the hill where they were then carried off and buried. After the vaccine for tuberculosis was discovered, the hospital became a nursing home that is also now closed. Now, an elderly woman may be seen running from the building with bleeding wrists and ankles; she begs for someone to get her out of that place. Many have also seen people peeking out of third floor–the residential ward–windows.

A couple of years ago my aunt told me a story that i will never forget. A friend of hers went to waverly hills with a group of people and a ghost had followed her home. a week or so later she was sleeping and had left a candle lit in her bedroom. somehow her curtains had caught on fire and she swore up and down that something or someone had been standing over her bed trying to wake her up. as she seen this figure she jumped out of bed to exit the house and realized that the figure had disappeared. strange things may happen at waverly but be careful of what could or might follow you to your own home.

I don’t know if anyone has seen the show or not, but The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS) has a show called “Ghost Hunters” on the Sci-Fi channel and they did an episode at Waverly Hills. There was a bunch of creepy stuff found on audio and even some thermal imaging – a small figure, thought to be of a boy or young child, was caught on tape running from one door across the hall to another. Anyone interested in ghosts should check out the show sometime, not everything is in Kentucky but there’s a lot of neat stuff.

Waverly hills is not the sanitarium with the tunnel for dead bodies. That one is located near hazard ky. the residents there refer to it as “frozen” It was featured on the show “Scariest Places on Earth”

the shawn before me is wrong their is or was a tunnel for bodies. it went almost down to dixie hwy. It was their to discreetly remove the dead so the current people attending the tb hospital would not see the alarming death rate people were dieing on a daily basis. I live 4 or 5 miles away in valley village. And the tb hospital may be haunted but their are plenty of haunted places in Louisville that in my opinion is more haunted but few people know of these places. if you want to hear about them look me up on myspace my email is scrappy10sley17@aol.com but i dont use it just use it to look up my myspace page. I answer all the questions I can on the hospital and give you directions on more places that aren’t publicized that are just as haunted in louisville

Actually, Waverly Hills does have a “tunnel” that was used for taking the bodies out of the hospital. It was also used by the workers who lived lower down the hill (it’s not fun climbing back up, let me tell you). If you want to take a tour, you have to contact the Louisville Ghost Hunters, as they are the ones who give the tours. I think they start in August.

Speaking of the little boy caught by TAPS, we saw him on our tour. Our guide was telling us stories on the 4th floor and all of a sudden he said, “that’s my shadow, right?” and we all said yes and then he said, “who’s that?”. It was a very clear outline of a skinny little boy and his shadow was much clearer and darker than our tour guides (the only light coming in was from the security lights outside). It was really awesome.

I live very close to Waverly. The owners are quite nice. I’ve been there 3 or 4 times. It gets less scary everytime for me. But it is a very fun place to visit, quite scary the first time. I swear I’ve seen someone looking down on me through the window while I was there, but the people I went with just said I was crazy.

Hey Chelsea,

Have you or your father ever considered calling TAPS to come and investigate? I think it could be some good publicity for ya’ll to attract more customers. Plus you could be on T.V.!

For anyone out there that does not beleive that The “TB Hosptial” is haunted you are full of shi*. I have lived in the area for 30 years. I grew up off West pages and when ever me and the family would leave you could see part of the hosptial. In the spring and summer it was harder to see for all the trees with leaves. In the fall and winter you could see it as clear as day. When i became of driving age i just had to go see the hosptial for myself. Me and a few of my friends went there. We seen thing and heard things that was not normal. We left and never went back. Now that i am older i am still at aw over this building. I have been back and the weird noises and strange sightings are real. I will go back for another tour. People say differnt things happen everytime you go.

I cannot believe all the grammical errors on these comments, must be a bunch of uneducated hicks from Kentucky
————————-
Michelle, don’t you mean grammatic errors? I’ve lived in kentucky all of my life and can spell and write sentences better than you, and yet you have the nerve to call the people of kentucky uneducated hicks…. hypocrite!

As far as waverly hills goes I’ve never been there but I do love a good haunt. I plan on taking a night tour for my 10th wedding anniversary. My husband and I are all about hauntings. The building is supposedly very haunted I guess we will find out soon enough.

Hello, my husband and I would like to go. Can you stay the night there? Is it an organized tour? Do you call ahead for reservations?

For those interested, Waverly is going through major rentavation and is going to be opening as a hotel. All those who disbelieve should make reservations and stay the night. I personally have been to Waverly on Halloween night, 1987. I honestly can say I seen nothing while there, but had that creeping feeling the entire time. We made it onto the roof(spectacular view from there) and stayed for about three hours. We did hear some noises that were strange, but no sightings of anything. I don’t know how you would make a reservation to stay at the “hotel”, but I am sure if you research you could find some info. Maybe someone here could advise for people that are interested.

I remember going there in 1970[I was 16 years old at the time] and also worked there when it was I believe a nursing home, did not like being there at all and this was before I know what it use to be, my parents never talked about it so I did’t know the story till I got older, one thing that always stood out was it was very beautiful and well kept, I can remember it as if I where standing right now in it’s majestic halls at this very moment, I have only seen recent photos of it on the web because I have not been there since 1980, so sad to see it now in the shape it’s in now, It would be more horrific to me to see it in it’s present shape    than to even see a ghost, I hope some day to see her back in the shape she use to , SHE WAS A VERY BEAUTIFUL SITE TO BEHOLD.Shelia from Kentucky

The truth about this place scares me, to know that all those people died there because of the disease. It’s not a place that should be made fun of or categorized so badly. It should be taken strongly and not as a place that is supposed to be like, “Oh ghosts live there,” I myself wish I could go tour it and see the frightening truth of history.

You all do reaalize that they are renovating it into a 5 star hotel but to take a tour for 2 hours its $20, for 4 hours its $50(i think) and to stay the night its $100 and you have to make reservations and during the end of september and all of october they set up a haunted house. Just google waverly hills and you should get their website that gives you information on tours.
