Waverly Hills Sanitorium for Tuberculosis

Louisville, Kentucky

(Also known as the Waverly Hills Sanitarium for Tuberculosis)

During the early twentieth century, Louisville had the highest tuberculosis rate in the country, so a hospital was opened. Many of the patients remained here until they died. The dead bodies were pushed down tunnels to the bottom of the hill where they were then carried off and buried. After the vaccine for tuberculosis was discovered, the hospital became a nursing home that is also now closed. Now, an elderly woman may be seen running from the building with bleeding wrists and ankles; she begs for someone to get her out of that place. Many have also seen people peeking out of third floor–the residential ward–windows.

I have been to Waverly Hills. It is pretty creepy. I didn’t personally see anything though but I captured a few interesting pictures..One of my friends captured a crazyyy picture in the tunnel and it is actually up on one of the walls there. It was completely black down the tunnel when he took it and there is an outline of what looks like a male. I was very impressed and I am pretty skeptical. The tours are interesting. I’m actually trying to schedule another trip to see this place again.

My mom was a patient there for 11 months when she was 17 in 1958. I have a clipping from her high school newspaper (Ahrens High School) with her picture and an article about her being in the hospital. Nothing scary or anything. My mom told me she really didn’t have any “ghostly” encounters, but there were some sad things she saw. People would walk around with tubes coming out of their bodies with bottles or jars connected. I guess for the gunk from their bodies to drain into. She said that when they would roll them out to sleep on the porches, she would hear noises….but she chalked it up to her teenage imagination or animals rustling around in the woods. There was this one story she told me about a girl who was in her “ward” that would fight the nurses because she didn’t want to take her sleeping pills because she was always screaming “they are after me!” This was an everynight thing and she didn’t want to go to sleep. One morning they found her dead in the bed with a horrid look on her face as if she was scared to death. My mom can’t remember the floor she was on but she believed they did surgeries down the hall at the other end of the building. I don’t know what floor that was. I have never been there though I am curious. When I was a teen in the 70’s, it was a nursing home or something. When my grandma was at Hazelwood Hospital, I overheard the nurses talking one time that they would never work there because the conditions were so bad that and they couldn’t deal with it. Thought I would share the story with you all.

Well what you hear about waverly is true. i have been there this year on a paranormal investigation. It was great. we have lots of pics of orbs, a girls face at the window on the third floor. we seen figures, heard voices, got evps. temps changed. we stayed all night. there is a body chute. very long , cold and dark. this was the way they took the dead out so that others there at he hospital did not have to see so many deaths. we hope to go back again the first of 2009. they are turning this into a hotel. although we were told that the 4th floor i believe will stay as it is and be used for groups that want to check out the place for paranormal. i did encounter having rocks thrown at me after mentioning that it was really quite and not much going on between the 4th and 5th floor. after i said that, rocks were tossed at me, a ball drifted down from one floor to the next to others in our group. glad i got the chance to go.

Lindy if you check this site again we are going for an overnite stay nov 30th and I was wondering what kind of camera you took, equipment, etc. Was the ball there or did you take your own for the boy “timmy” to play with. Please let me know, we are very excited about the stay!!

how much does it cost to explore the hosbital without being on a tour? When does the hosbital open?how much does it cost to spend the night there?

peggy steele says:

October 30, 2008, 9:37 am

the cost is $100.00 per night to stay without being on a tour. you have to have a group of 10 and it runs on the weekdays, sun-thur, we are going sun nov 30 and stay all night. The hours are 8pm-4am. we are so excited. I’m not sure how long the tours are lasting, supposedly the are going to turn the hospital into a 5 star hotel. Sometime in 2009. So if ya wanna go call soon!!

I have been on their tour twice. I have several pics with things that can’t be explained. It is $20 dollars a person and it is worth it. The only bad thing is too many people in a group at one time. If there are a few people that won’t be quiet you can’t hear anything.

If you go there, make sure to look for “Timmy” on the second floor. He will play with a ball and leave them in different places on the floor and look for the shadow people on the fourth floor.

Hi, me and 5 of my friends are going on the 4 hour tour Friday. We all are very excited. Can someone give us advice on where and what exactly to look for? What kind of camera to take? And do we use the flash? How many people usually go in a group?

peggy says:

Hey Stacey, from the ghost hunting shows I have been watching, and research I have been doing, most people take camcorders with nighshot, digital voice recorders to catch evp’s. We are going Nov 30th for an overnite stay (there will be 16 in our group) and I am taking a digital voice recorder, my regular camera (yes I would use flash), a camcorder with nightshot, digital pocket thermometer, emf reader, and a nightvision monocular. We are so pumped for this stay. I have been told to look for shadow people. Especially a child they call “Timmy” If you take a ball and set it in the middle of the room, he will play with it. I’m not sure which floor, just google “Timmy at Waverly Hills” and it should tell you about him. Supposedly the floor with the most activity is the 4th. Please post about your trip, would love to know what all you see. Have a great time!!!!

To those who have never been to “Waverly Hills”
Let me say, as a child I often heard Ghost stories and was a non-believer to the Paranormal. August of 2007 was my fist visit to Waverly Hills since then I have been once more, Let me tell you the experience there was off the charts. If you are wanting or planning to vist “Waverly Hills” be prepared what you will see, what you will hear is not a trick. If you have questions or want to talk about the paranormal.
You can find me at myspace.

I’ll be gald to share my experiences…

Thanks Peggy for you advice. I have a digital voice recorder that I will take along with us. And I will be sure to use a flash. I will let you know how our trip goes. I’m very excited.

about the waverly santorium for TB patients there is a movie out called death tunnel (2005) about a halloween party when 5 girls were chosen to spend 5 hours on 5 different floors. when they all woke up they had their heads covered. the sanitorium was built in 1910 and over 63,000 people died in that hospital of the white death(TB). the facility was no more than a stockyard for the sick. the death tunnel was 500 yards underground and was meant for supplies but ended up being the resting place for dead patients. they ,the caretakers, believed in fresh air for the patients no matter the weather and patients could be seen w/snow on the top of them.

I have a few questions for those of you that have been- we are going for my b-day gift in March for the OverNight Tour- whoo hoo!
1. OVERNIGHT? What time does it start and end?
2. Where all do you go on this tour?
3.What do you think I should bring?
4.DO you go down the tunnel area “body chaute” is it stairs? How far can you go down?

Thanks!

My group went on the 4 hour tour Friday night. We was in a group of 17, the first 2 hrs, we got to explore the death tunnel and the first and second floors. The tour guide gave us an overview of certain rooms and told us what time to meet back, so we go to explore ourselves each floor. The second half of the night we got to explore the 3rd, 4th and 5th floors. It was very interesting. I didn’t see anything, but I got scared once, I thought I was going to fall because of my legs got so weak. I got some pretty good pictures that might be something. We are going to try to go back for the full night stay around April of next year and do some things differently. There were so many people wondering around, so I don’t think we had a chance of seeing anything. The tour guide told us to turn the flash lights off and set in a room, but I don’t think anyone done that, they were all to interested in the building. Overall we had a great time and hopefully get to go back in spring.

I too attended the Friday night 4 hour tour with Stacey and will have to say this experience was awesome. We arrived 11:30 pm, checked in at the gate, then parked. My group was told not to take pictures of the building with the flashes because there was a tour going on, so try and make sure you have a camera with night shot. I did not see any ghosts up close and personal, but did have a few we’ll say close encounters. The whole time my group was on second floor I was convinced something was staring at us, and we heard a Swooshing sound coming out of no where. On the third floor, I ran across a ball in the hallway and began to roll it around. I pushed it the ball forward, to my suprise the ball rolled back toward me, and then side to side. Though I am not sure this was the ‘Timmy’ ghost, this was definately cool to see happen. When arriving on the fourth floor, the tour guide walked us toward the Surgery room and I kid you not I am convinced I saw a figure of a person standing in one of the rooms. That freaked me out a little and my group hurried to catch the people in front us. Finally the tour guide took us up the roof, the 5th floor, and the home of room 502. While the guide gave us the origin of the occurrences of the floor I felt something touching my skin by my elbow pit. There is no way this could of been a person touching there. I had a long sleeved shirt, and a sweat jacket on. If anyone is seeking advice my recommendation is to make sure you listen to the tour guide. Go find a room away from everyone, sit there with no lights, and make as little noise as possible.
