Real Haunted House

Waverly Hills Sanitorium for Tuberculosis

Louisville, Kentucky

(Also known as the Waverly Hills Sanitarium for Tuberculosis)

During the early twentieth century, Louisville had the highest tuberculosis rate in the country, so a hospital was opened. Many of the patients remained here until they died. The dead bodies were pushed down tunnels to the bottom of the hill where they were then carried off and buried. After the vaccine for tuberculosis was discovered, the hospital became a nursing home that is also now closed. Now, an elderly woman may be seen running from the building with bleeding wrists and ankles; she begs for someone to get her out of that place. Many have also seen people peeking out of third floor–the residential ward–windows.

Well, let me begin by saying i am the founder of one of the many ghost hunting teams here in Louisville. I have never seen so much wrong information on a single site before, and i only read a small portion of the comments. The death toll WAS in the tens of thousands. When TB hit here in Louisville, it darn near wiped Lousville off the map. Hence the hospital was born. The tours are seasonal, spring and summer, opening up for the traditional haunted house in October. It is $50 a person, $100 for extended tour with the tour guides around, but not under you, and if you have a team of 10 or more, $100 a person for the whole night with no tour guides what so ever. My team is currently raising the money to do this. There is plenty of paranormal goin on there, but not as much as its reputation may insinuate. The feeling of uneasiness usually come from people lookin to be scared, therefor are. For the truly sensitive to the paranormal, this is worsened. I have performed several Investigations there with all the scientific equipment, and have got a few things, but not as much as some other places in Louisville that I didnt see mentioned. The mattinglys have only owned a few years. It was never bought by the historical society. Matter of fact, it was owned by a friend of my family for years. Mr Alberhasky wanted to tear it down and build a monument to Christ up on that hill. He was unsuccessful since the historical society stepped in and stated that it couldnt be torn down unless condemned. He left ip open for several years hoping the local kids would destroy it. This is where the graffitti came in to play. When he finally gave up, the mattinglys offered to purchase it, as a historical landmark only. They didnt even believe in ghosts at the time. They have since remodeled a wing, and actually live there. There are rumors of them turning it into a hotel for paranormal investigators, but i dont know how true those are. I havent gotten the guts to call tina (mattingly) up and ask her. If anyone who reads this has a dispute, question, or curiosity about our group, feel free to email me- jadestorm545@yahoo.com. thanks, and happy hunting!

The show “Ghost Hunters” visited there once. Some weird things happened while they were there, but I don’t think they caught anything legit saying it was really haunted. It could very well be haunted, and they just weren’t able to catch anything. It looked pretty spooky though!

I visited to Waverly Hills Sanitarium on 9/23/09, two days ago. I will be back for the eight hour “free-roam” tour. Too much history for it not to be haunted. I did personally not see anything, also the tour was only for two hours and it was at eight p.m. I would advise going to Waverly Hills if you are a believer (or non-believer), either way…you won’t regret it.

they have now closed down waverly hills because they are turning it into a hotel. i dont see why they would so suck a thing because of what all happened in there but they are doing it….ive been up to it before and it is a very scary place. i went with my parents one night in october of last year and we got to the gates and they were locked…there are 3 different one lane roads that lead to it. we got to the locked gates and sat there for a minute and all of a sudden there was headlights that came on and they followed us from the gates to the end of the road…….then dissappeared..

Waverly Hills is indeed a very haunted place. Another ghost named Timmy has been seen rolling a blue ball around the hospital. Also, another nurse had hung herself in a residential ward. If you wish to go to Waverly, it will be worth while, spend the night too. It’s very interesting.

I love anything scary, so I decided to look up the Waverly Hills website. I would love to visit Waverly Hills but you have to make reservations. A regular tour is $22, if you would like to stay 1/2 of a night it is $50, and a full night is $100…

why dont the new owners of waverly hills tell everyone the morbid history about the doctor who would experiment on the dead patients the horrible treatments that were given and expalin about the neckelace everyone would have to wear if they were in fected ex. nurses doctors,
about the nurse who fell to her death from the top of the sanitorium its nice renevation buy why not keep the old jumk i understand u cant compromise peoples saftey and the infrastructure decay but keep old with new to help with the history

I have been there before…it really is a terrifying place. My friend and I decided to sneak in one night, I wish I had never agreed to it in the first place. We snuck through a window on the ground floor and were shocked to find that none of the inside doors were locked. We went through the entire place and found nothing out of the ordinary, until we got to the top floor. There’s a really long hallway (at least it seemed long in the dark) and we couldn’t find the door we had come out of. There were a lot of different doors in the hall and we tried them one after the other. In the second to last room, there was a person standing next to the window…we shut the door quickly. But when we turned to the end of the hallway, the person was there. I believe it was the woman this story talks about. She was bleeding from the wrists but I’m not sure about the ankles. She was wearing a hospital shift that was torn up and soaked with blood. I don’t remember what her face looked like but I do know she had a shaven head, which struck me as odd because she was distinctly female. I do know that that was the fastest I have ever run in my life. Lisa (my friend) and I found the door we had came through, opened it, and she was there again. She looked at us…and I saw her eyes. They were a startling gray, completely lifeless. Then she whispered ‘revenge’ and disappeard. I wish I knew who she wanted revenge on. It was clear she had been tortured. Lisa and I made it back to the ground floor and snuck back out the window. We got in our car and…just like in the stories above, our car wouldn’t start. We had to leave the car and walk 10 miles back home in the dark. We were so scared that she was following us. When we went back the next day to get my car, it was trashed. Tires slashed and windows/windsheild busted. I hope it was a vandal. But I think it was her.

Do really know how many ghost are really in there ’cause they only show people parts of it and literally THOUSANDS of people have died there, so are you sure? The only way to find out is to go there and review the entire place from top to bottom in the evening(s).
