Real Haunted House

Whaley House

San Diego, California

During the early part of the 20th century, this house was home to the Whaley family, while it was also being used as a town hall and courthouse. Hangings were a frequent occurrence in the parlor, and strange happenings have been linked to this. All the Whaley children died unnatural deaths such as having an ax fall on their head, and being killed in the doorway of a closet. Today, in addition to the sightings of two apparitions, footsteps are heard and many weird odors permeate through the house.

I have been to this house many times. There is no question in my mind that this place is definitly haunted. Trust me I never believed in this stuff, going to the Whaley House made me a believer. I want to take their night tour they have, still am working up the nerve.

I was able to tour this house when I visited my sister. Nothing happened inside the house, but when I stepped out on the front porch, a strong smell of pipe tabacco wafted across. As I was the only person on the porch at the time and I wasn’t smoking a pipe, I don’t know where it came from.

I have never believed in ghosts, but, I was fortunate enough to take the Ghosts & Gravestones tour of San Diego; included was the Whaley House at night. I had heard of the Whalet House before and was interested to see it for myself. Knowing very little of the background of the house one gets a weird sense in being the house. I had a very unusual experience in the court room/schoolhouse room. In the next to the last row of seats on the left side (if looking towards the front of the room) near the very left edge seat I stood talking to my wife. Al of the sudden I had chills that stood the hair up on my arms and neck and gave me the weirdest sensation I have ever felt. I did not see anything, but I definitely felt something, and as soon as it happened it was over.
My wife said I had a very odd look on my face while this event happened. Was it a ghost? I don’t know, but let’s say that I have a little more belief in that they might exist. I highly recommend the Whaley House to any doubters of the supernatural, it could just change your mind.

lol, i doubt that its hunted, i went at midnight alone with my little brother (he was craving some ghost haunting) we went inside, the door was locked becuase the tours closed, i was tring 2 open the door, and then mylitttle brother said “move for a sec” i move, he used some kind of trig, and strangely, he picked the lock (and hes only 11 yrs old lol)
we went inside, the light swich didint work, i said go ahead inside, ill wait for you here. he got his flashlight and said ok! so i jest stood there for like half an hour, so i thought ( i might as well go in) so i went inside, i used a flashlight, i saw a little boy run, it looked jest like my little brother, i said c,mon lets go, its gettin late, i walked through te hallway, i saw a flashlight on the otherside, it was my little brother, i said c,mon lets go, and please dont run, it makes to much noise and it gets me worried, he siad i wasant running (he is ussualy a liar) and so i said, sure you werent, so we left, he kept saying it wasant me, i didint beleave him, nothing else happened there, but we came back in the morinng, we saw apperations and oders, but nothing like the ones yesterday, i think this house is jest 1 big hoax

I know the history of the Whaley house very well, having grown up in San Diego and toured the house in Old Town many times. Hangings were *not* a regular occurance, but there *was* one hanging, of a frenchman who stole a boat, in a gallows that was made in the backyard (not in the parlor). Unfortunately since it was basically an angry mob, the gallow wasn’t made well, and wasn’t high enough, so the neck of the poor man didn’t break and he strangled to death over half an hour. His ghost is supposed to be one of the ones that haunts the house. All the Whaley children did *not* die, only one did, of an illness. No one died from having “an axe fall on thier head” though one of the children, as a grown adult, did commit suicide.

This house is haunted! The person that wrote the comment about the axe falling on there head, I believe is entirely true. …because it would have taken an idiot to write something so stupid! We have pictures of the whaley’s, and a little boy sitting next to his dog. There’s is definently something wrong in that house!

having grown up in San Diego i attended many school field trips to old town. ive been to the whaley house about 5 times. and each time ive gone i felt something different. ive felt nauseated and dizzy when in the kitchen and ive also smelled the scent of chocolate chip cookies and a metallic odor that smelled almost like blood. ive smelled the cigar odor numerous times, and even thought i saw smoke appear near mr.whaleys office. when i went up stairs i had someone run up against me and pull my skirt. i also noticed that the rocking chair in one of the kids rooms was rocking slightly. while in the courtroom i felt a hand on my thigh. i have no doubt in my mind that this house is haunted. i believe your chances of seeing or experiencing anything are dependent on the number of people. i noticed that when it was a medium crowd i felt things more than when it was a large crowd. the same for a small crowd. as for the family friend who got caught in the wire. she was running down the hill after her mother gave her permission to play with the whaley girls. she was so excited that she didnt notice the low hanging wire and slit her throat(mrs. whaley was short so the laundry line was short so she could have easy access to hanging the laundry.) apparantly mrs. whaley put her in the tub that is in the kitchen and tried to soothe the girl by baking cookies.

I’m a native San Diegan and I’ve been to the Whaley House and though i’m not psychic I did feel a presence in fact a few presences along coming down the stairs adn some in teh court room. Hell let’s say this I work for the Convention Center and I did have an encounter with a ghost of a former employee, but let’s just say I’m not the only one. I’ve spoken with at least 6 people,3 of which no longer work there, that have had an experience or two with not just my ghost but of another. They keep this under wraps, but the ghosts are harmless, in fact the one I talked to only appears to new hires and welcomes you to the Convention Center. No joke.
