Whaley House
During the early part of the 20th century, this house was home to the Whaley family, while it was also being used as a town hall and courthouse. Hangings were a frequent occurrence in the parlor, and strange happenings have been linked to this. All the Whaley children died unnatural deaths such as having an ax fall on their head, and being killed in the doorway of a closet. Today, in addition to the sightings of two apparitions, footsteps are heard and many weird odors permeate through the house.

I grew up in the san diego area, never went into the whaley house until febuary of this year.
I have been there several times since, and yes there is a lot of activity there, i have managed to get a lot of photos, 1 or 2 video recordings and some EVP.
I feel that there was more going on that is known.
the history itself is very interesting (to me atleast)
the dog is one of my favorate ghosts there.

I visited the Whaley House all by myself during the day and I have to say..that the only thing I felt was my purse slightly lighter since I paid to enter the house. I didnt see anything, smell anything, or feel anything except for the place being hot and stuffy. I love visiting historic places, so at least that’s what I got out of that day. Wish I was able to get out of what others did. Oh well. I even walked around the cemetary that’s in that area. Nothing. Oh well.

No, actually, the whaley house is a house that is haunted by the spirits of Michael and Richard Whaley. The whaley brothers were carpenters in town, but as you know, life has its little secrets. One day, Bobby McGee, the local florist, delivered flowers to the whaley house (back then, the florists also delivered – what an idiot!). Anyway, the florist had something else planned for the whaley brothers. Death was the prescription that the doctor ordered. And Mr. McGee had the vial. He poisoned both brothers with Philthranxip and he was planning on eating their flesh (fact later revealed in his memoir), before he was apprehended by the milk man, who, by the way, was having an affair with the wife of Michael Whaley. Very interesting story. I wrote my college thesis on it. What a spooky frightening yet fun tale!

This site should get their facts right. The hangings were said to take place on the property before the house was constructed. NOT in th parlor…..research the facts

I’ve enjoyed reading all these comments, however, I’m saddened by how our children cannont even spell or use grammar correctly! Shame on our schools…I have also visited the house before and have nothing to report, but I AM going to go back and take a tour again.

Toni H., please don’t blame the school system for children not using correct grammer and spelling words correctly. They’re being taught well but some children refuse to pay attention to what the teachers are teaching! So, shame on those children! I too visited the W. house this summer and I must say, I didn’t feel anything, nor did I smell anything. I did get some great pictures though! Picked up many orbs and shadows. I wasn’t happy about the fact that you were not able to walk into the bedrooms nor the parlor because of the plastic windows that were build inside each doorway. I would like to go back. My dad doesn’t believe in ghost, but I did capture a little Native American girl standing behind him. My students at school pointed her out to me. An image of an old lady sitting on the bed, and a dark cloud of a face is in one of my pictures also. They say it’s best to go during the daylight, you have more activity. I also went to the gravyard down the street where Yankee Jim is buried among many Mexican Americans. I did not capture any ghost there, but it was a creepy looking place. I talked with some of the locals that worked in the area and found out that the Old Town village is more hauted than the house. The lady in the shop that sales old hats and pins etc. said that children have haunted her place for a very long time. She said that she had some Ghost Busters come in to get rid of them but she told them no, that those children had every right to be there as much as she did. She told me that she asked the childen to stop breaking things in her store and they could stay. She hasn’t had a problem with them since, except for closing doors and laughing. Old Town is a very interesting place. I will visit again!

I have lived in San Diego all my life, and have visited the Whaley House on more than one occasion. I have to agree that this house definitely has spirits. I saw a rocking chair move by itself, the decorative fringe on a 20’s style lampshade move vigorously, and heard footsteps when no one was there. Also, there was a piano in the courtroom area, and it upped and played a few keys in the middle of the tour guide’s talk. Even the guide was shocked. I didn’t feel any coldness, but it did feel like there was someone blowing on the back of my ear, and brushing the back of my right leg. I also encountered the lavender perfume.
I’m sorry for those who feel that they wasted their money, although if you were worried about that, you should re-think your reason for visiting these types of places. People that are more in-tune with their spiritual sides or more “psychic” have a tendency to encounter more in these types of places. Don’t concentrate on looking so hard, the things will happen if you just relax. Ghosts like to play games like that.

I have been to the Whaley House sevveral times. The first time I went I knew nothing of the history or the hauntings. I did hear a baby crying when there was not one anywhere in the area. I also heard and felt a dog, again there was none around. Also experienced the chain in the court room swing by itself.

This website is S*** for one thing. The facts are all F-ed up and the history is not correct… also most of the people posting on here are too stupid to know what’s going on…
with that said, I have visited the whaley house many times. I live only a couple miles from it so I drop by every once in a while. I’ve gotten some interesting pictures, nothing too vivid however. Plenty of orbs that cannot scientifically be accounted for however. The strangest camera malfunction happened to me while touring the house last year. I was in the courthouse room and my digital camera card “could not be read”. This has never happend to me before. I turned the camera off and back on, and my camera had copied picture number 12’s thumbnail onto number 13, making it so picture 13 on the card could not be read (because it was not actually a real picture). This has never happened before the visit, and has not happend since. It is the strangest thing that has ever happend to me at the house. I have about 3 witnesses to the story. Weird stuff.
