Real Haunted House

Whaley House

San Diego, California

During the early part of the 20th century, this house was home to the Whaley family, while it was also being used as a town hall and courthouse. Hangings were a frequent occurrence in the parlor, and strange happenings have been linked to this. All the Whaley children died unnatural deaths such as having an ax fall on their head, and being killed in the doorway of a closet. Today, in addition to the sightings of two apparitions, footsteps are heard and many weird odors permeate through the house.

I have toured this house on 2 occasions, the first being at night and then went back the following day. I do have several interesting pictures taken there. One picture shows a white mist in the parlor and I have several pictures in the garden when there appear to be children in the bushes. I also took a picture of the “life mask” of Abraham Licoln which was not in the pictures when I got them back from the photo lab nor was it or any blank photo in the negatives. I don’t know why, but it just wasn’t there…I was hugely disappointed. I’m looking forward to visiting again this fall and hope to get more unusual photos.

When i was on a field trip which all San Diego scvhools used to do was a one week tour of Old Town we visited on the 3rd day the Whaley house and we enjoyed a lovely tour but the weird things that did happen were only happeniong to a few people.
I was one of those people now i don’t know if it was because i was more interested in the whole haunted house theory or what but i could smell tabacco smoke on the main stairs as we went to the secound floor but my friend next to me said i was smelling things cause she smelled nothing also0 i could here the baby crying but nobody around me could hear it, although the weird thing was that some of the people in my class said that they could not see the shadow of the man who was hung from the tree but i could see it clearly so i don’t know what was going on if they were just kidding or not but that trip only enhanced my mind and made me want to research the whole ghost idea more and the knowledge that i turned up about the Whaley house was really interesting including a photo that i have of my grandmother in front of the house with a shadow of a person in the secound story window when thw house was supposed to be closed that day.

Being a resident of San Diego, I have been to the Whaley house many of times. I had a out of town guest come in for the weekend and decided to give her a tour of beautiful San Diego. We went to the Whaley house a couple of days before holloween in 2003. We took many pictures throughout the house. Me, being the sarcastic person that i am, stood against the wall in the courtroom and held out my arm as if i was holding another person on the side of me. My friend snap a picture and we went on touring the rest of the house, taking pictures throughout the rest of the house.
When we had our pictures developed the next day, we found many unexplained things. Alot of orbs and lights that were not there before. But what really got us was the picture we snapped in the courtroom. It showed me by myself with my arm reached out with no one there, but there was a picture on the wall that was a old picture on the house in the early 1900’s,the refection in the glass was not the house picture, but a old man reaching towards me. He had a long beard and dark glasses and would scare the hell of anybody. We call him Yankee Jim, this is the person that was hung in the hallway of the home. I am the only person I know that actually has a picture of a real ghost. So before you say ghosts aren’t real, check it out yourself first.

So, quite simply, I’m into dark things, as well as being a history buff, and when I first heard about the Whaley House in Old Towne San Diego, I got really excited. I had never gone to a haunted house before, as I do believe that ghosts exhist and also admit that I’m not sure if I really want to see one.

Anyway, on my last trip down to San Diego I stopped by the Whaley House after reading up on all the histoical information I could find on the place. I admit I didn’t see anything, and neither did my 12 year old nephew, but I do admit that from the moment I stepped through over the threshold to the moment I left the house, I did feel a strange pressure. Almost like I was weighed down with by something.

Like I said, I didn’t see any “ghosts” per say, but I really appreciated the house for it’s historical relevancy, their preservation efforts and the overall creepy vibe I had the whole time I was there. I posted some “boring” pics from my trip here: Whaley House.

Even though I didn’t see anything I would most definately go back. . . just in case. :)

Ive lived in San Diego for the last three years and finally went to the Whaley House about 3 months ago. Before then i wasnt aware that it was on about every list for top 10 haunted houses. But anyways, this kinda goes along with a post up top by D. H. Stapleton. The area and experience he had is exactly the same as the one i had. I was in between the last two rows on the far left, and my girl friend was sitting down, while i was standing behind her. All of the sudden it felt like someone lighty grazed the back of my neck, i turned around, to see nothing, then i got chills throught my whole body. At the time i just thought i was freaking myself out, until i read his post, and it is the exact same. Now i feel like i had a real experience with the supernatural.

I went to the Whaley house in April of 2005. It was hot that day and as I was going up the steps I felt very cold. It was only on one step though. I looked up to see if there was a vent or attic of some sort to see if that could be the reason for the cold feeling. There was nothing like that above me. I did stand there and enjoy it since it was so hot that day.

While standing in the dining room looking out the window to the backyard I did smell lavender.

I recently visited the Whaley House. I was disappointed that there were no guided tours. The docents hand out printed information on the house and the supposed hauntings there. Although it’s a very cool house I did not see, feel, smell or in any way feel that it was haunted. Sorry folks.

The children were actually killed differently; one of them ran into a clothes wire and was decapitated, but im not sure about the other.
And the most famous hanging was done right before the house was built, and that is who you hear climbing up and down the stairs. I’ve been there, and let me tell you it is SCARY.
