Real Haunted House

Whaley House

San Diego, California

During the early part of the 20th century, this house was home to the Whaley family, while it was also being used as a town hall and courthouse. Hangings were a frequent occurrence in the parlor, and strange happenings have been linked to this. All the Whaley children died unnatural deaths such as having an ax fall on their head, and being killed in the doorway of a closet. Today, in addition to the sightings of two apparitions, footsteps are heard and many weird odors permeate through the house.

Most of these comments should not be posted, just a lot of rude people trying to get a word out to be funny i guess. Oh and for the person that said it should be tore down, it doesn’t matter what you do or build therem what’s there is there… I have had my own personal experiences with the unexplained and i believe it is very much haunted.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Guests that enter the museum are first and foremost educated on the history, and if requested, be entertained with stories of hauntings. Each guest can determine, according to their own belief (and their own evidence, if able) on whether the Whaley House is haunted or not. Being currently involved with the Whaley House and SOHO (the preservation group overseeing the care of the musuem, for those of you who didn’t know), I would like to clear up some of the historical “facts” that have been mentioned. Yes, the Whaley House was built ontop of the old execution grounds. No, the executions did not take place in the House, nor did they take place outside in the yard while the House was standing. It is undetermined where each execution took place with the exception of a possible witness description of Yankee Jim Robinson/ Santiago hanging location. The witness (which happened to be Thomas Whaley) describe the execution location as being in proximity of where the parlor archway was erected. The Whaleys had 6 children in which 2 of them died at young ages. Thomas Jr. died a little over the age of 1, possibly of scarlet fever. Their daughter Violet, age 22, took her own life by gunshot to the chest. The story of a little girl (depending on the story, may have been Whaley related of not) that had run into a clothesline has been determined false. No such event happened. The legend of a possible murder inside the house or on the property has not been proven. Many of the legends and lore of the Whaley House is still being researched. To understand and learn the true history of this House may give believers and non-believers a new perspective on the paranormal validity of the Whaley House. To understand it’s mystery is to learn it’s history.

Hmmm…. well i was there with my mother, aunt, cousin, and sister. And my cousin went to Mr.& Mrs.Whaley’s room near the theatre ,and instead of there being a closet door there is this curtain.my cousin was in that room when all of a souden the curtain slowly moved back and forth then she jesturd for me to come in and i saw it too when she left the room!! and it looked as if a hand was grabing the curtain from the inside.now that was FREAKY!

My aunt was at one of the kids room near the window thingy and something in that room cought her eye,she thought she saw my mom(she saw a ladie i guess?) behind her and when she told her to look at it my mother did not reply. so she turned around and saw noboby there.but she felt a little chill. Then my mom came out of the theatre room thing and my aunt asked if she was standing behind her a little while ago,but my mom said she was in that one room the whole time.and us kids were in that garden so it wasn’t us.later when we were leaving my aunt told one of the workers and she said ” Oh! that was mrs.whaley silular things happened to other people like what happend to my aunt. Dunno but i am such a believer, i have been sense i was 4 years old and i wont listen to the **** of people saying i make it up! thank u….♥

For those who wonder where the Whaley House is located, it’s at 2482 San Diego Avenue, San Diego 92110. It’s closed Wednesdays. There’s a nominal donation.

I’ve been to the Whaley House a few times and once saw a spoon in the kitchen swinging by itself, and another time saw a doorknob upstairs that appeared to be turning by itself, though someone could have been turning it from the other side. But it’s a great place to visit if for no other reason than to experience local history.

I have been in the whaley house before. I actually started crying. It all started when I looked the house up on the internet and decided to take a vacation in that city. Now I know that i am 15 and I can get scared easily, but this really scared me.

Now when I first went imto the whaley house I was only 12. And let me tell you, I cried a whole bunch.
When I first stepped in my girlfriends and I decided to stay and sit and talk for like an hour or 2. Everyone left when we got there so I was a little scared. And after we were done chating we went upstairs. I creeped inside a room and just layed down because I was soo tired. I rubbed my eyes and then when I took them off, I looked in a mirror and saw a mad face stare straight in my eyes. I screamed and ran downstairs rto my friends. They were staring at the door in terror. When I asked them what was wrong, they told me that they heard scratching and kids screaming for thier life.
After I told them what I had seen they all started saying bad stuff about the house. And what stopped them was the luod running steps that came from upstairs. We all started crying and moaning. Then all of a sudden the running steps started coming down the stairs. We all ran out and what was right behind us was the fottsteps still running.
When we were all out of the house we all looked back and saw the screen door slam shut. \
That house will give you nightmares and horrible memories. If you were to ever go there then you better watch what you say and do in that place because if you dont, then a ghost will probably chase you out of the house like what they did to us.

My grandma started that rumor! I`m not kidding! She was raised in long beach and went there alll the time. She went there with her friend once and they thought it was a ghost, but it was a gray cat.

amy says:

January 27, 2007, 9:08 pm

No I actually think that you are a lier. Because why would a gray cat appear in the mirror while I was laying down?! Well all I know is that what I saw was real and what other people say was probably not real.

This story made my mind think crazy things with the unnatural deaths of the family in the house. It was almost like watching men in grease stained shirts marching in lines with chains wrapped around them and scoulls on their faces just itching for the next kill.
