Whaley House
During the early part of the 20th century, this house was home to the Whaley family, while it was also being used as a town hall and courthouse. Hangings were a frequent occurrence in the parlor, and strange happenings have been linked to this. All the Whaley children died unnatural deaths such as having an ax fall on their head, and being killed in the doorway of a closet. Today, in addition to the sightings of two apparitions, footsteps are heard and many weird odors permeate through the house.

im a sophomore in high school now, and i remember in 5th grade i took a field trip here. it wasnt scary really at all when i was in, i dont remember it that great, but i dont remember any smell like everyone else is claming. but i did take pictures inside the house, and in almost all of them there was a white shadow thing, so idk if it was because its an old house, or because of ghosts, but thats i remember in the courtroom there would be white shadows like in the judges chair and stuff. the stairs were very creeky, and when u went up, it always seemed like there was someone else with you. i do believe there are ghosts in that place, but idk for sure

I do believe that whomever wrote this little bit of info on the Whaley House, should get rid of it and do some research on the house before sharing incorrect facts with the public.
Not all of the children of Mr. and Mrs. Whaley Died of unnatural causes…infact Lillian C. Whaley lived in the house until she was moved to a nursing home due to ill health. She was the youngest child of Thomas and Anna Whaley and died in 1953…that would make her pretty old.
Thanks,
Michelle

My husband and I took our two daughters to the house in 2003 and we were there while a film crew was shooting for the Travel Channel. We followed them around with 2 paranormal experts and listened to all the “activity” they said was going on. They would point to areas and say that they saw a figure here and there and all kinds of things that we couldn’t hear, see or feel. My husband is a complete non-beleiver and I have an open mind but truly could not feel or see anything. We became bored and left my teens with the tour and decided to explore the court house. We no sooner walked in to the left side and began signing the registar when my husband and I both heard a heart wrenching scream of a woman. We looked at each other and discussed how we both heard it and how it became very cold right around us. The odd thing is no one else around us heard it as we asked everyone. It was very errie and the only way I can describe it is it sounded as if it were coming from far away through a tunnel. We had been to the house twice before without experiencing any activity so my advice is keep going back. I was also impressed that the house is a registered haunted house wich means that someone from the state of Calif. comes in and checks to make sure there are not any wires, fans, faulty electrical wiring, etc that is causing the activities.

I personally believe that the Whaley House is haunted due to several experiences. When I first went there, I could not stay in the area near the parlor. I was overcome with the sense of fear, dread and sadness. On a tour a year later, I found out that that is where they used to hang people before the house was built. I have had my sweatshirt strings fly up in front of my face while there, and we’ve captured an EVP of a man whistling in the dining room area. No one was in the room except for us, and the person taking the recording cannot whistle. In the theater upstairs, I was sitting in a chair next to the wall on the west side of the room when all of a sudden it sounded like someone ripped the wallpaper next to my ear. I actually jumped back, but no one else heard it. It was too loud to be imagined.
Keep an open mind while there and stick to the parlor area. That’s where I had my experiences…

My daughters and I went on the night tour of this house in December of last year, and while we were upstairs in front of the last bedroom near the window that looks over the back yard, we all felt like someone was watching us, and when we started to walk away, my daughter felt as if she was pushed. My other daughter was taking pictures of us and the first picture she took without a flash and it looked like a light was hanging from the ceiling, but in the picture with the flash, there was nothing hanging. When I looked at the picture on the computer with some enhancing, it looks like a very angry screaming face of a man. Creepy!

I visited the Whaley House late Spring this year. My husband and I found out about it while touring Old San Diego. I was a bit reluctant to go in, but since there were alot of tourist present I felt a little more comfortable going in. The house is quite interesting as well as the history. Both my husband and I took alot of pictures but we didn’t capture any ghostly images. I will admit though, there is a strong presence in the house, particularly in the entrance of the dining area–the entrance right off what was once a store and where there are some displays. It just felt like someone was right there behind you just looking down at you. Pretty creepy, all my respects to any spirits. I hope to visit the house again. I did capture an image at one of the Missions at San Fernando Rey de Espania, although I have never heard of any storys of the mission being haunted.

I live in San Diego and my son and I went to the Whaley House. At the time my son was only 3 years old and just like everyone else I wanted to see for my self if I could see or feel anything there. Well we walk around were the court house was and my son was running around and touching things and then we made our way up the stairs to all the bedrooms as soon as we got up there my son stayed by my side did not run off like he did down stairs. Then we made our way back down the stairs and I started to talk to the lady that worked there she told me that I should keep an eye on son beauses little kids can see things that we can’t see well anyways we were getting ready to leave but my son started to cry saying he didn’t want to go past the stairs and I looked but didn’t see anything there but I think he saw something or someone there so we had to go past the stairs to get out and as soon as we were out he was fine stoped crying and wanted to get down from my arms and I remember what the lady had said to me early. I haven’t been back there in 4 years so I really don’t know what he saw that day.

It was November, 1966 when I went there with a friend. We were stationed at the San Diego Naval base.
The story that was told to us, consisted of the Whaley family living there. There was a hanging on their property, but not sure where. The man that was hung protested his innocence until his last breath.
Don’t recall why he was hung. It was said that his spirit continued to haunt the house by way of a cold breeze blowing through the parlor.
Back then, the door to the basement was locked, and no one was ever allowed to go down there. I tried to get permission to stay overnight by myself, but they wouldn’t allow it. The property was run by the city at the time.
There also was another story circulating back then. It was told to me that a San Diego newspaper reporter and two other people, can’t recall who they were, received permission to stay overnight back in the early 1950′s. To make a long story short, all three were locked in the night before by city workers.
The following day, when the workers came to let them out, they found the newspaper reporter crouched in the corner of the room, on the floor, in the parlor. His hair was pure white, a dark color the day before. His face had a look of terror, and he was finally helped up and taken away. They say he never spoke again and continued to stay in a trance like state for the rest of his life.
The other two people, one of which was a female, exited the house, never again to talk about whatever occured in the house.
It was supposedly reported in the local newspaper about what I just described. That was the reason why no one ever again would be granted to stay the night, locked in. It could never be explained why these people didn’t just break a window, or a door, or try something to escape.
This has been my personal experience with the Whaley house.

I’ve been to the whaley house before…it’s creepy. You should watch out whn you’re on the stairs, because it feels like there’s something gripping your neck, and it gets hard to breathe. Also, when you go into the court room, watch the chandelier(sp?) it moves. And watch for Mr. Whaley,my friend has seen him looking from a the balconey in broad daylight. Also, watch for a bright orange orb that floats from the top of the stairs into the theatre room, and listen closely for heavy footsteps..

ok I visited the Whaley house unfortunatley I had no encounters of any kind. However I do believe the old town area which the Whaley house is located, is haunted. First of all the town is built on an Indian Burial ground. when the town was built there were so many bodies that they made a small cemetary for the local town folks as well . It is located a block away from the whaley house. And as for the rest of the bodies.. They laid cement over them and built roads/streets that are walked on and driven on till this day. Back to the Whaley house. I definetly feel there was something eerie in the the bedroom where there was a sewing machine and the girls dolls.
