White Screamer
In this small town of White Bluff there’s a famous hollow where the White Screamer dwells. No one knows exactly what it is or its origin. It’s said to be a white mysty form that wails and cries and screams enough to make any person go insane, thus gaining its title of “The White Screamer”. It has also been noted that if one ventures to the spot where they might’ve seen the White Screamer, the grass will be burned away. Alledgedly, around the 1920’s a young man built his family of a wife and seven children a home and farm down in the hollow, and every single night they’d wake up to the sound of this awful crying and screaming. So, finally, after this young man has had enough, he grabs his shotgun and runs out into the night off to find whatever beast is making this awful noise. He climbs to the top of one of the surrounding hills to see if he can spot it, and then hears the sound of screaming… only it’s the voices of his family and children. By the time he can climb down this hill and get back to his house, he finds his whole family dead.. and pieces of their body thrown around on the ground and the floors of the house. You can still drive down into the hollow and see the foundation of the house and graves of the members.
Well I enjoyed the story till the end…. THe end ended to quickly… But is this story true??

THE WHITE BLUFF AREA SCREAMER IS A DOCUMENTED CREATURE. IT HAS NEVER HURT A HUMAN. IT PREFERS DOGS TO EAT AND THERE IS ONE CASE OF IT KILLING A CALF. I NEVER HEARD OF IT KILLING A HUNTING DOG IN THE WOODS BUT IT DID TAKE A FEW FROM YARDS AND DOG PENS. IT STANDS ABOUT SIX FEET TALL ON FOUR LEGS. IT IS CLOSE TO AN ALPACA IN SIZE. IT HAS THREE TOES ON EACH FOOT AND A LONG NECK ABOUT 30-36 INCHES LONG. IT IS SHORT HAIRED AND WHITE IN COLOR. ITS HEAD RESEMBLES A CAMEL, BUT WITH A SHORT NOSE. IT HAS A VERY LOUD VOICE SIMILAR TO A WOMAN SCREAMING. IT IS VERY FAST, HAVING BEEN TIMED ON A RUN FROM HILL TO HILL. IT IS ESTAMATED IT CAN REACH SPEEDS OF NEARLY 70 MPH. IT HAS GREAT STRENGTH IN ITS LEGS, BACK AND JAWS. I HAVE OLDER FAMILY MEMBERS THAT HAVE SEEN THIS CREATURE. I HAVE INTERVIEWED MANY PEOPLE THAT HAVE SEEN IT AND A FEW THAT HEARD IT AND DID NOT STAY AROUND TO SEE WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE. I HAVE SEEN HAND DRAWN PICTURES OF IT. ALL THE PICTURES LOOK SIMILAR. IT HAS BEEN KNOWN TO COME UPON PEOPLES PORCHES, BUT IT HARMED NO ONE. THERE HAS NOT BEEN ONE IN THE WHITE BLUFF AREA SINCE THE 1950′S. IT RANGED THE TRACE CREEK AREA NORTH TO LEATHERWOOD CREEK, EAST TO HARPATH RIVER AND INTO THE TURNBULL AREA AND THE SULFURWELL AREA. I ONLY KNOW OF ONE MAN THAT SHOT AT IT AND THAT WAS THE MAN THAT LOST THE CALF. THERE PROBABLY WAS MORE THAN ONE OF THEM, BUT I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO FIND TWO SIGHTINGS AT THE SAME TIME. AT PRESENT THERE ARE A GROUP OF THESE CREATURES DOCUMENTED IN A STATE NORTH OF TENNESSEE. I WILL NOT STATE ITS NAME BECAUSE SO SOMEONE WANTING TO BE SEEN ON THE 6:00 PM NEWS WILL BE OUT HUNTING THEM.

I personally want to believe in it, but find it very hard to believe in the white screamer. It is just a legend because almost every story I have ever heard about it, the description of it has changed drastically. It has been a little girl, a nine foot tall woman with goat feet, ect. It is just some legend created by the people of our county to entertain people(just like the “werewolf”, until I see it, I don’t believe.

thats an entertaining story but I would seriously doubt that it is composed of all facts. I have lived in the Franklin County area of Tennessee all my life, and I have never even heard of White Bluff. Im tempted to pay the town a visit, now.

Sorry, guys, but its real. My cousin was out walking and heard it for himself. I’ve lived there all my life, untill now anyways, but Ieven saw it and what SHE can do! Me and to of my friends while at willam james, did a dare. It is stated that whoever yells I hate the white screamer 10 times in a dark room infront of a mirror, will ither be cursed or dead. Well we did it! My cousin almost died that night because of a strange rock came out of nowhere and hit him in the head hard. He was rushed to the doctor’s office just in time! I, however, was awaken to see my cat hit by lighting, and the tree to the side of my house, hit the ground! I got pics. to prove it, too.

this sounds like a variation of a tale about a scandinavian spirit called an utburd. they believed that the spirit of a child that was exposed to the elements and left to die which was a common practice in ancient times could form into a vengeful spirit which would come back to attack the living. they usually appeared as white smoke but could take on human form as well and were marked by unearthly screaming, howling and ground shaking. interesting that this type of story would appear in tennessee.

I went to White Bluff earlier tonight after reading about it on the internet. I was really skeptical but my friend, Thomas, made me go. We were out in the woods and we wasjust sitting there in the dark…and all of a sudden someone pulled out a joint and I threw down my barbeque sandwich and smoked on it. anyway, i don’t know why i told you that, but i’m all jacked up on mountain dew, I don’t know if the amalgamation of the joint, the sandwich and the mountain dew threw off my perception but all a sudden i heard soemthing in the bushes. it was a high pitched whoooooooo noise- jus like you see inthe movies. i hope this information was helfpful to yall in your search for spooks and ghosts. just whatever you do, if you go to white bluff to see that screaming white thing, don’t forget your flux capacitor.

What Barry Hutchins commented about it is completely the truth. I am a residence of White Bluff and have heard many tales of The White Screamer and not a single one has to do with it killing a person although im sure it could if it wanted to. I have investigated and talked to many older people of the community who have lived in White Bluff all their lives. They all describe the way it looks in very similar ways. Alot of people are scared of it because of the way it looks, i am included in that category, although i have had the pleasure of never having an encounter with it.

I live less than 5 miles from White Bluff in neighboring town Charlotte and I have never heard of a “white screamer”. I went to school with White Bluff people most my teenage life and never was it mentioned. I have a hard time believing this as a traditional local folklore. Must be something recent.

I live in a town about 15 min away from White Bluff (Bon Aqua)but when I was in HS I was in the Bluff all the time with my best friend at his place. We camped most every weekend with all the guys from school…played paintball all the time in the woods and I have never ever heard of this Screamer. My brother and his wife now live in the Bluff and Ill be sure to let them know about this incase some camel looking dog comes a knockin at their door.

I’ve lived in dickson county all my life and my grandmother has lived here most of her life and she has told me this story many times. When I was little I always thought she was trying to scare me but as I got older I relized she was truly scared of it. She used to tell me about encounters her father had with it when she was little and how they would have to put things in front of openings in their house when she was growing up because they didnt have doors. My grandmother is a well respected woman in the community so do say Im making all this up. I personally have never had any encounters but I believe in the white screamer.

My Family has lived near White Bluff for a long time. And we have never herd of the White Screamer. But when we asked some other locals they said that its just legend and that ” There ain’t any real proof that the white screamer excists,” I don’t believe in it. It’s just a lot of ****.

Also that story by Ashly is ovbiouly fake . Its to much of a quincedence. I’ve herd of people getting struck by lightning after an encounter with the supernatural. But animals. Also Iv’e read that there is only one ghost or supernatural ‘thing’ known to actually KILL the Living and thats the Bell Witch. Also all the other ghosts ( Except the bell witch)doesn’t khave the power to hurt someone, and that the only way for them to avenge their death is just to kind of be a bother or just to scare the liveing out of people. I lived in the bluff for almost 13 years and I can tell you the first story was wrong. All throught my life I have always heard of the screamer. I was under the impression it was a banchy not an animal,but it did scream but it didn’t drive you mad. I thought it looked like a white hooded woman real gostly looking,but I allways dismissed it as local folk-lore a real good story to tell at halloween.

I live in Dickson County and I have heard this legend many many times.Just because most of you are negative about things you can’t understand don’t think that they do not exist because you best understand that they do..In fact you would be surprised by what or who may be standing or sitting next to you and you don’t even realize it.and Barry i do believe this legend to be true.Thank you for setting all these non-believers straight.To those that are like Barry and myself thanks for backing this and all legends up.There is a reason they are called legends..It means that at some point in time it was living and something tragic happened to this soul.Think about it!!

Ive lived in TN for about 12 years mostly dickson an now White Bluff for 4 years . and weve always heard about the White Screamer my two sons and a friend on two seprate ocasions along HWY70 in Dickson County when they were walking down the road saw across the street in the woods walking a tall white figure like a BigFoot tye . and it ran off in the woods .and they claimed to see it again in the woods behind Buckner park in dickson they were walking down a path in the woods they always took for a short cut and the same typ of white figure walked onto the path and then dissapeared they freaked out an ran and still walked that path sometimes hoping to see it again.

I’ve lived in White Bluff for 39 years and in this time i’ve seen the screamer 3 times, face to face and it does not look like a camal. My first encounter was in 1975 when it grabbed my younger brother walking to my cousins house, which was only a couple of yards down our old dirt road. We were the only houses on this road. He just begin the walk when i heard him holler and scream. Me and my friend came running towards him only to see this creature that was a whiteish gray about 6 feet tall holding my brother on the side of the road. We were scared to death. This thing had reddish pink eyes and a solemn stern look with a roundish head and wide shoulders and standing on 2 legs. We try to pull my brother from it then it started screaming and let my brother go. While we were running home it circled us 3 or 4 times screaming. We made to our yard where the light from our porch was on, it stopped and ran across our hog lot. We told our parents but they didn’t believe us till my uncle called a few minutes later saying something big ran across his porch. The next morning we were missing 2 sows. About 7 years later it came again and killed our dog and tore our screen door off. My dad shot it with a 30-06 but did not hurt it. We tracked blood for half mile then it just stopped. The 3rd and last time i saw it was 10 years ago. When me and my brother was working on his chicken house, just about dark when we heard something coming down the creek. My brother said there it is it’s back. We had electricity out there and fliped the security lights on. This thing ran behind the chicken house screaming. We both had pistols with us but we knew thet were useless, it just started to run back up the creek and was gone. But the next morning the chicken house door was tore down and all his chickens were dead. I can’t say that it won’t hurt people because it attacked my grandmother. While she fed her dogs she said it didn’t hurt her because of her dogs which attacked it. She had 10 dogs all big dogs. My brother passed 2 years ago but he still said he could hear the screamer from time to time. Don’t count on it not hurting you. THE END!!!!

I’ve lived in White Bluff all my life and since I was little I’ve heard the story of the White Screamer, but I’ve never heard of it killing anybody either…I don’t know the exact place that it is seen but I do know that it was mostly seen around turn bull creek. I would like to know the truth in the story, but I’m not sure i want to ever encounter it myself…too big of a chicken for that…they’re a few ghost stories around this area that have been around for years..suppose on trace creek there’s a ghost that goes up and down the road screaming or something, but i’ve never seen it either, and in Burns, Tn, there’s a grave yard off buddy road that we call werewolf springs …that place is haunted and i know it first hand…there’s more places around dickson that’s haunted..you can go on the r.center’s website and they have a speical of haunted places in dickson that they go to and investigate paranormal activities..check it out.

I have lived in Kingston Springs my whole life. I now live in White Bluff and have for 2 years now. I have never heard of this story. I haven’t asked anyone about it though. It’s interesting and I would like to hear people’s stories. Anyways, For those of you who have never heard of White Bluff, it is west of Nashville. Just two counties over.

This story is so true. My dad lives in White Bluff,where we spend our weekends with him. He lives in a narrow valley, where a creek runs behind & in front of his house. He had just moved into the house,from a house down the street. My sister and I encountered this creature while taking a stroll down the street, it was very tall that stood near 6 foot. It had wierd looking eyes that gazed and stared threw you. It was standing on two feet and it was a whiteish gray. We had been hearing foot steps behind us,but everytime we looked back nothing was there. Then, this thing comes running out of the woods toward My sister & I and we were in shock and couldnt move until my sister yelled run. Then we started running as fast as we could. We ran until we got to our house. It had disapeared when we got to mailbox. About a couple hours later, my sister and I were in our room. She had started to raise the window when the creature started grabbing at her threw the opened part of the window. She started screaming thats when it started screaming .So, I could’t hear her. Then, I pulled at her and kicked and screamed. Until, our dad came into our room. Right, when he was turning the door **** the creature fled. While, it was tugging and pulling at her,It felt like he was staring threw me and I knew it wasnt going to be the last time we would see it.Until, this day We havent encountered it,yet. But, we are heistant to take long walks down the street now!

My name is Tammy. I am 34 years old. I do have to say that this is the first time that I have ever heard this story. I and alot of friends use to swim down at Turnbull Creek, Slater Bottom and Leatherwood, when we were younger. Never have I seen or heard anything like this. My grandparents live on Joslin Branch and has lived there all their lives. My grandmother is one to tell alot of folk tales but this one I’ve never heard. I’ll make it a point to ask her.

well, just like the majority of the people that have commented here i too am from White Bluff. i hear this story every year and it just cracks me up how much the tale changes. even so, this our town tale and ever place has one. i just hope that one day this story will actually have a scream of evidence to prove that it is true.

True or not, I find this story interesting. But I don’t like the bigfoot/other monstrous creature angle. I’ve never found those types of things scary in movies. I much prefer the demonic or ghostly. I’ve recently started writing scripts and would like to build a story around the legend of the White Screamer, so I’d really appreciate it if anyone who actually lives in White Bluff, TN would email me with any stories and/or experiences they’ve been told by grandparents, etc. I’m also interested in knowing which areas of White Bluff are somewhat isolated from the communities and are also said to be haunted by the White Screamer.

Hi ive lived in TN for 15 years now. Ive never heard the story mentioned here but i remeber being told og the screamin jack. I live in grudy county my grandparents used to liv e in northcutts cove outside of warren county and we used to have bonfires some nights my uncle would tell me and my cousins this story. Ive never heard it or seen it but to here some older people talk its real and some say it is just some sort of a panther. Still its a good story and still makes me run in the house a t night sometimes.

i am 23 yos and a native of tennessee my family was one of the original people from dickson county and yes i havee heard many times about the white screamer and do believe its real my great grandmother who is a well resptected minister has seen a apelike creature back in 1963 still has newspaper articles about the incident i have personally been toe werewolf springs and had a creepy experince there me and a couple of friends at tthe time where living in charlotte
not far from the site of the white screamer we driving over turnbull creek wherre werewolf springs is located legenad has it when u drive through there u car will stall and u w ill see white mist around u trust me at this point i was freakin and so was are frinds there is a post office in burns that claims is haunted by a healess man and can been seen in vroad day light there is also a place in charltee and nearby white bluff a old slave graveyard story and i have seen it a shado of a young girl can be seen walking along the road dickson county has some well known tells and did u ever otice its near adams tn she was born there where the suppossed bell witch resides i don’t know what the white screamer is but i do believe it too many reports have been told from years to present there has been documentations btw of the legend of dickson county nd many paranormal groups has been investigating charlotee and white bluff for ages if anyone has any questions regarding the tales of dickson email me @lilbubba161990@yahoo.com

This story has been told for many, many years. It; along with the tale of werewolf springs are part of Dickson County’s history, true or not, these stories have been told by many grandparents, parents, uncles, and old timers. When it comes to paranormal activity, no one story is more true than the other. Its all about what you believe or don’t believe in. And it is what this website is all about. So…why put down people and say it’s BS? If you’re reading it, you must believe in it someway or another.

“WHITE SCREAMER.” I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR LIKE 4 YEARS TO SEE THIS CREATURE AND I FINALLY DID. AND LET ME TELL YOU, IT IS MORE REAL THAN I EVER IMAGINED! THERE ARE THOSE WHO ARE VERY SKEPTICAL, BUT YOU SHOULD NOT BE AT ALL. I SWEAR IT EXISTS. AFTER SEEING IT I PERSONALLY BELIEVE IT IS A YETTI(IN MORE COMMON TERMS, A BIG FOOT).MY BOYFRIEND WAS BRINGING ME HOME ONE NIGHT AROUND 9PM. OUT WHERE I LIVE IS BACK WOODS. NEAR LEATHERWOOD AND NARROWS OF THE HARPETH. WE WERE COMING AROUND A TURN AFTER COMING OFF THE 2ND BRIDGE WHEN WE SAW SOMETHING STANDING IN THE CLEARING IN FRONT OF THE TREES, BUT IT WAS FAIRLY CLOSE TO THE ROAD. AT FIRST I JUST FIGURED IT WAS A DEER OR COYOTE BECAUSE IT WAS ALREADY TOO BIG TO BE A RABBIT OR SOMETHING. THEN AS WE GOT CLOSER I REALIZED THAT IT WAS ABSOLUTELY HUMONGOUS! I STILL CANT GET OVER THE FACT OF HOW BROAD ITS SHOULDERS WERE. THE FIRST THING I NOTICED WAS THAT ITS EYES GLOWED BRIGHT RED IN THE HEADLIGHTS, AND THE EYES WERE QUITE LARGE THEMSELVES. SECONDLY I NOTICED THAT IT WAS WHITE. THATS WHEN I STARTED TO GET SCARED. WE STOPPED THE CAR NOT THINKING ABOUT THIS THING THAT WAS ACTUALLY STANDING IN FRONT OF US. I YELLED AT MY BOYFRIEND TO “DRIVE!”. WE STARTED DRIVING AGAIN IN DISBELIEF AND HE ASKED ME IF I WANTED TO GO BACK AND I SAID NO.I WAS SO TERRIFIED THAT I STARTED TO TEAR UP. SURPRISINGLY HE DID TOO EVEN THOUGH I HAD TOLD HIM OF THE CREATURE BEFORE HE JUST ALWAYS MADE FUN OF ME. THIS PROVED HIM WRONG AND HE KNEW IT. WE PULLED UP IN MY DRIVEWAY WHEN MY LITTLE SISTER CAME OUTSIDE TO GREET US AND I YELLED “GET INSIDE NOW!”. SHE HEARD THE FEAR IN MY FIRST SO SHE DID WHAT SHE WAS TOLD. AFTER CALMING DOWN FOR A FEW MINUTES MY BOYFRIEND LEFT. HE CALLED ME ABOUT 5 MINUTES LATER COMPLETELY FREAKED OUT. WHILE HE WAS GOING BACK AROUND THAT TURN HE SAW IT AGAIN BUT IT WAS RIGHT NEXT TO THE ROAD AND WATCHED HIM AS HE PASSES LIKE IT WAS WAITING FOR HIM TO GO BY, WHEN MOST ANIMALS WOULD RUN OFF OR ACT SKITTISH. BUT IT JUST STOOD THERE AND WAS COVERED IN WHITE HAIR, STANDING ON TWO FEET AND WAS HUGE. IT WAS MORE REAL THAN ANYTHING.

HEY I’M NOT SURE WHAT IS TRUE OR NOT. THESE STORIES ARE ALL A LITTLE FAR FETCHED. THE SUBJECT CAME UP TODAY AT WORK ABOUT HAUNTINGS AND I SAID THERE WAS THIS PLACE “WEREWOLF SPRINGS” BUT I COULDN’T REMEMBER THE STORY. IF ANYONE OUT THERE KNOWS THE “REAL STORY” PLEASE POST IT. I KNOW THERE WAS A DOCUMENTARY DONE ON THIS NOT TOO LONG AGO BUT CANT RECALL WHAT CHANNEL IT WAS ON. I’VE NEVER HEARD OF THE “WHITE SCREAMER” BEFORE TONIGHT. This is a very interesting story. I love to read and hear about stuff like this! A lot of the comments left were very amusing also. I enjoyed reading them all. However, there is a possible explaination to this phenomenon. As we all know, there is a population of Black Panther’s here in Tennessee. I moved down here several years ago from Ohio and we also had Panthers up there. I got a call one day from my sister in law, she was excited saying that there was a white Panther on the rocks above her house. I thought, “Yeah, Right” but went right over there any way to see. I looked through the scope on her rifle and sure enough there was a VERY large white panther laying up on the rocks in the sun. He was swishing his tail, which was really long, back and forth and watching us while we were watching him! That was the most beautiful sight I have ever seen! Noone else said a thing about seeing that white panther, but it was there, I saw it with my own eyes along with my sister in law and her six kids and my husband. Panthers scream like a woman and make other sounds that sounds like a little child crying and whimpering. I’ll bet that is what the white screamer is. When people see things like this and there are stories about monster’s and unidentified creatures they are scared and think they see something they don’t. I believe there are unexplained creatures out there, I have seen ghosts and spirits myself and have a good pic of one on my back porch, so I am not a “nay sayer” in any way. But I do believe in trying to find a rational explaination if one exists.

I want to go there. See if I can see that thing. It sounds so cool and I totally believe in it. I believe in just about all the ghost stories I hear, but most of the time I have to see it to believe it. My family and I go to alot of the places that ghosts supposedly live. I just wrote a comment at the bottom of Sleepy Hollow Lane talking about a ghost site I visited. So cool & scary at the same time!!! lol Take a look at it if you read this.

Just found this site. Although I never needed extra proof because I saw the White Screamer (great name, by the way) with my own eyes, it helps to know more people have seen this creature. We always called him or her the White Man. My now ex-husband, myself and our daughter saw the White Screamer in 1986 between Hogin Rd. and Gum Branch Rd (also known as Lime Kiln Road) in Burns, TN. We were taking a hike and it was getting close to dusk, so we decided to start towards home on foot. We were coming out of the woods to a cow pasture and home was on the other side of this cow pasture. When we first saw the White Screamer he was crouched down just staring at the cow pasture. We must have made some noise in the woods and brush, because he stood up and turned around to face us. I think we startled him, and he sure startled us. My uneducated guess is he was about 7 feet tall, with longish, mostly white and cream-colored fur. This White Screamer stood there for a few seconds and we all just stared at each other. We were about 25 ft. away from him (or her). Then the White Screamer bolted for the cover of the woods. I have never seen anything run so fast with huge strides. I mean, even the Cheetahs on TV. This thing was FAST. As the White Screamer ran, he kept looking back at us. I guess to make sure we were not going to follow him. I said to my husband, “What the hell was that?!?!?!?” From what I hear from my daughter in recent times, he does not like to talk about this encounter.
Anyway, my daughter does not remember. She was only a year old and on my ex-husband’s shoulders at the time. I know of two other people that have seen the White Screamer. One is a current sister-in-law and another is an old friend. All of these sightings took place on Gum Branch (or Lime Kiln Rd.) in Burns, TN.
Three other notes I thought were interesting: 1) The White Screamer did NOT have a tail and he was bipedal.
2) There is a fascinating place on Gum Branch Road called Underground City. I believe it is now privately owned, but it would be the perfect “hideout” for the White Screamer!
3) There are numerous accounts of mutilated cattle/calves in this area, at least there was in the 1980″s.
Don’t put all your eggs in the science basket, because the scientists have’nt been able to prove the existence of a bipedal 7 ft. mammal yet!
