I don’t know why everyone is getting so spooled up because they said they don’t believe in the local legends. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. If they don’t want to believe, let them. Perhaps some day something will happen to change that belief, perhaps it won’t. Either way, believe what you want. I live on Oahu and plan to go up to Waimea to check this out for myself.

When I was going to Pearl City High School back in the 80’s, I had some friends that went on an Hawaiiana field trip to the Kilauea Crater on the Big Island. Some of them took a piece of the volcanic rocks near by. Almost everyone were in a serious and almost fatal accident. The teacher asked who every took a lava rock must return it to where they found it. Please ask “Pele” for forgivness and return the lava rock or stone to where they found it. About a few weeks after they returned what they took evryone who were ill, had gotten better.

For you “science” guys, there is actually a science behind the paranormal, look it up. Myself, I am a tour guide for a ghost tour company, which means that we run 6 out of 7 nights a week taking people to known haunted spots around the island of Oahu, and retelling the stories there. I have been there since last year april and I will attest to seeing LOTS and LOTS of things. They are not unexplainable though, through ghost stories and basic understanding of science/physics, you will understand WHY and HOW ghosts actually appear, and why sometimes they don’t.

As for the rocks and bad luck, there are literally HUNDREDS or THOUSANDS of personal accounts from people who take rocks. Everyone knows you don’t take them, but not a lot of people know why. The reason why is that, a lot like our Native American friends, Hawaiians believe that everything is alive with mana (spiritual power or spiritual force), there are legends of spirits known as “Kupua” inhabiting the rocks and trees and so forth. By taking a rock you disrespect the spirit in it. O yeah not to mention some rocks are considered to be the offspring of Madam Pele, don’t piss off the volcano goddess.

It is not Waiamea, it is Waimea! And this lookout is actually part of a Hawaiian burial ground called Pu’u o Mahuka Heiau, which is why there are so many “spooky” stories about this area.

I live in Hawaii (Oahu) as well and I’ve learned you should respect your home. If you guys have ever been to the Chinese grave yard (the children’s section) it’s really creepy. My friend and I were there to put flowers on one of our families graves and we started hearing crying. The wind wasn’t blowing but it was really loud. So I look at my friend and the lolo’s eating gummi bears. I said “Dummy give them the candy before you eat that!” he didn’t believe me but he put gummi bears on each of the graves and the crying stopped after he put the last one down. How do you explain that, since there was no wind blowing?

I went there once and I remember counting the 10 roadbumps. When I came back I saw a bandit running off into the woods with the other 3 roadbumps which is why there is only 7

So, I happen to surf out to this site, and find out my old stomping grounds got listed as an actual haunted area. YEP! The Heiau on Pupukea Hill, overlooking beautiful Waimea Bay, on the North Shore of O’ahu. As a child, I lived on Pupukea Hill, and used to ride MX and BMX from the back of the mountain, where I lived, all the way down to the Heiau (place of worship/sacrifice/etc). The trail we used to take was so remote, we would sometimes see wild pig, peacock, pheasant, etc. Once we got to the heiau, we would park & drink, smoke herb, whatever…One time, we stayed late into the night, partying & playing around, jumping over rocks, playing hide & seek (I know…sounds kinda gay, but when you’re bored & drunk…what would you do?) LOL! Thru the entire evening, we kept seeing random shadow figures moving around all over the entire site – we joked around trying to scare one another. My friend broke away from the bunch and went uphill away from the heiau to take a leak. 2 seconds after he disappeared into the haole koa trees, he came running out yelling, “Let’s Go! Let’s Go!”…. We ran over and grabbed our bikes in a panic and asked him what happened. He said that when he stopped to whiz, he looked up and way back past the trees, he saw about a dozen men dressed in Hawaiian loincloth and raincapes. They were all looking right back at him in disgust. He said that as he ran out of the bushes, he heard them running, following him out. I saw the bushes and trees part and separate behind him as he moved out of there! I cannot to this day come up with a reasonable explanation for what I saw. There was zero wind, no one else was up there but us dummies. I’ll never forget the look on his frikkin face! The next day, we met up and wrapped some manapua’s and bananas in ti leaves and left them there on the rocks as a sign of respect. I have not been there since moving to the mainland in 1991.

To all you non-believers, be careful. Be respectful when you tread on old Hawaiian ground. Preservation isn’t solely done to keep an area in its original state…sometimes, it’s done because the MANA – the spiritual power of that site will not allow anything else to take its place. With that said, I would bet $$$ that if anyone tried to settle on that land, he/she/they would suffer dearly.
