Wiccan Circle
This house is said to be very haunted. A total of eight people have died in one way or another in the house and they are all thought to still reside there. It is said that one may experience faucets turning on and off, coasters flipping over, and footsteps throughout the house. There have also been reports of the appearance of a glowing cross. Others have alleged to be held to the bed and shoved down the stairs. Beneath the carpet in the basement, there is reportedly a Wiccan circle carved into the wood.

I grew up in Kalamazoo and have heard of all these hauntings…and i lived on Douglas but never heard of the mansion would love to get some pictures…But if you want to check out a very cool place you have to check out an old cemetery on miller rd. almost to 35th street.. i got some outstanding pictures there . it is very hard to find but if you would like a map let me know and i will send you one.. well worth the trip. and also the house everyone is talking about the pipe and cigar is not on Vine st… it is on Westnedge ave..If you turn south and vine and westnedge it is about a half mile down the road on the left it still has a cast iron fence around it.. and yes i was one of the stupid kids that had to check it out. i was about 17 and there was probably 6 or 7 of us.. only 3 of us went in the yard and up to the door.. and yes there were candles burning and a pipe and cigar in the ash tray.. no onw has lived in this house for years.. the story is that a family came home from a vacation and all disapeered in that house or yard they were seen in the drive way but never seen again.. this was back in the 70ies when i was there. and this happend late 40ies early 50ies my father can remember this. Another place that is very cool and just off Douglas is the old TB Sanitorium my sis and i spent hours trying to figure out how we was going to get in threw the fence.. i spoke to an professor from western michigan and showed me how to get it through the fence. i told her we would be a couple of hours. i had to promise her i would not go in the building.. and we didn’t, maybe if we would have had a few more people we might have.. that place looks like a war zone.. i grew up there and never seen it or heard of it before.. a good view of it is at the top of michigan ave hill near the castle if you drive in to the cemetery and look straight south you can see the building..alot of web sites have this building in portage michigan… If anyone would like to spend a day just going to different places in kalamazoo and taking pictures i would love to go. and before i leave could i please have a list of hauntings in kalamazoo.. there is a bar down town that has a visitor every once in a while but i do not know the name of it.. i do this on a daily bases in Indiana but so much more fun in michiagn were i grew up…. you can see some of the pictures from the miller rd cemetery, and TB Sanitorium. plus more that i have taken…you more than welcome to join it’s all free and when i get new pictures you will be notified.

I also have some ghost stories of my own, I tried to submit them, but it’s been like 3 months and they still aren’t on this site yet. Anyway. It seems that almost every house I live in is haunted. I grew up in this house in Battle Creek (Springfield, technically) that was haunted. It has been confirmed that 3 people have died in this house, which I did not know about until after my first couple of encouters. The first time I ever had a supernatural experience was when I was about 12. I had come home from a friends house to find that no one was home, I called out and nobody answered. So I continued to gather my things to stay the night at my friends house again, and as I’m walking through the house I hear a voice whispering my name very loudly. Again, I called out everone’s name and no one responded. I walked through the house looking in every room and closet and found no one, the entire time this voice keeps calling for me. After walking around the whole house twice and finding nobody with this vouce calling for me, I got really freaked out and left without my things. After I walked out the front door this voice called out my name as well as both of my sisters names, I turned around and ran all the way to my friends house. But that’s not the only thing that happened there. When I was 15 I was playing with a Ouija board in the tunnel (the house used to be part of the underground railrod in the slave days, complete with a secret room and all – current owner may not even know about it because when my dad discovered it he patched the hole) and ended up talking to one of the ghosts that still resided in the house. She said her name was susie and that she had died from suicide. Almost 2 years after that event is when I was talking to one of my friends dads that had lived in the neaighborhood for a long time and confirmed that people had actually died there, he even knew susan(susie). He said that she was an avon lady. The other two people that have died there, I have actully seen. One was a little black girl that was killed in a raid on the house looking for escaped slaves, and the other is a farmer that owned the house at the time: he was killed in the front room, but it was not said by whom or why. Quite a number of people that lived in this house with me said that at night you could hear the little girl crying through the heat vents.

When I saw the little girl I was down in the tunnel giving a tour to a few of my frineds. My sister saw her as well; but when she saw her, the little girl was mad and my sister said that her eyes were glowing red because we had guests at my house were using racial slurs against her. I saw the farmer in the dining room one night when I awoke feeling like there was someone staring at me. but since nothing had happened to me in the years that I had already lived there I thought nothing of it and went right back to sleep.

I had some friends that lived in a house in Howell, Mi and they felt an unnatural pressence, and one day my husband and I were there, waiting for our friends to return home and we heard one of the bedroom doors upstairs slam shut,my husband went to check things out and found nothing. When the same thing happend again,we left. About a week before our friends moved out, a man stopped by and told them that should move out, that they should not be living in the house and that the “little boy” does not want them there, the man left and wouldn’t give his name or any other info. Our friends only lived in the house for about 6 months and have said that things would go on, mainly unexplained noises and such. The house is on Grand River between Howell and Fowlerville (if it’s still there). I believe in sprits, but I also want to comment about the house in Kallamazoo, a wiccan symbol has nothing to do with a house being haunted…true wiccans do not perform evil of anykind. Deb

i have lived in kalamazoo my whole life too.. i am from the winchell neighborhood off oakland drive. I have been to the TB hospital and it is cool. I went in the day and me and my friends climbed all the way to the top so u could see all of kalamazoo…my other friends checked out the incenerators in the basement. (it’s pitch black down there). The whole place smells like pee from bums…but there are old cells,an old front desk where they handed out pills, old beds, chairs, and old kitchen…I had to break a window near the top to get into the psycho relaxation room…there is a mural of flowers on the wall and the rest of the room is white..with some old chairs..i would recommend going…its off Prospect off west maine hill…there is a big gate in the front…police go around there so dont get caught. they might tear it down soon.

I live on Vine, to start out this comment. I am sad to say that I have yet to encounter anything paranormal in the least, unless you count the strange college students and bums. Second, there was a question about the house at Drake and Croyden. The house was built by Benjamin and Maria Drake in the mid 1800’s. The Drakes were the first white settlers in Oshtemo, and very important members of the community. I have some information on it on my site
http://www.angelfire.com/journal2/preservedrakefarm
It is now owned by the historical society and they plan on it being the Township historical museum. I have been inside before anything dealing with the township happened, and would like to think had something to do with it being protected now. It is a wonderful house with a very inspirational history.
The house has six bedrooms, only two bathrooms, two living rooms, a dining room, a back and front stairs, a breakfast room, and two kitchens(the original with stove, and a modern one). The property also had a Carriage house (torn down in the 90’s), a Garage, and a barn with stables (partially torn down). When I was a kid there were some greenhouses on the property as well. A few of my friends felt very cold in the attic on a very hot summer day, but I never felt or sensed anything paranormal, and I am sensitive to it.
I do have a couple of suggestions for interesting paranormal activity, though. The first is the abandoned town of Mentha. Mentha was a Mint Farming community out by TimberRidge Sky area. Take D Ave out to 23rd (it’s a dirt road on the south side of D Ave and hard to see, so if you pass the road to Timber Ridge you’ve gone to far) and turn left if you are coming from 131, or right if you come in from Gobles.
I ALWAYS get a migrain as soon as I turn down the road that leaves as soon as I turn off the road. There is still an old railroad station were the tracks were.
The second is in Spring Valley Park in Kalamazoo. You turn into the park at the entrance near Barclay and Mt. Olivet. There is a walking trail right off the parking area that heads down towards Riverview dr. The walk is beautiful during the day, but I still get an ominous feeling walking down there. There is a pond that every couple of years a kid will drown in. (not making it up. about three years ago a boy from Comstock drowned in it. It’s a matter of public record) It is also surrounded by not one, not two, but three Cemeteries. Riverside Cemetery, the Jewish Cemetery, and Mt.Olivet Catholic Cemetery. If you do wish to visit the trail at night (And I do!) You will want to park on one of the side streets near Barclay and walk down. Remember to take flashlights, and go during the day first. Very Very creepy.

Cindy,
Ooh, ooh, ooh doesn’t sound scary to me. I guess it all depends on what she looks like.
