Real Haunted House

Winchester Mystery House

San Jose, California
By Shannon Reinbold-Gee

Few haunted houses are more splendid and massive than the Winchester Mystery House. Once the pet project of wealthy widow Sarah Winchester, the Winchester Mystery House, which began as a humble 6-room home, is now a popular destination for ghost tours of the San Jose area.

In 1884 Sarah Winchester, heiress of the Winchester Rifle fortune, began construction on a Victorian-style mansion. Driven by her supposed guilt over the many deaths her husband’s rifle business caused, Sarah paid a veritable army of construction workers and craftsmen to build the sprawling 160-room house over the course of nearly forty years. Devastated by the untimely deaths of both her husband and baby daughter and thinking them to be connected to the shooting deaths of many victims of the Winchester rifle, Sarah was supposedly told that continually building the rambling home would appease (or in some cases perhaps trap) the spirits and lift a curse.

Acting as her own architect, Sarah consulted with spiritual guides to make sure the wandering souls who’d lost their lives by gunshot would find a final resting place. Sarah Winchester never created a master set of blueprints, instead she sketched the rooms she wanted on scraps of paper and occasionally tablecloths. The house’s hallways and corridors are like a labyrinth, causing many to speculate that perhaps Sarah’s goal was to trap and confuse the spirits who sought vengeance on her family. Rumor has it Sarah tried to avoid the restless ghosts by sleeping in a different room every night.

When the earthquake of 1906 struck, Sarah was trapped in the Daisy Room where she’d been sleeping near a fireplace that suddenly collapsed. When she was finally freed, she said the experience was the result of the ghosts wanting her to stop spending so much time perfecting the mansion’s front rooms—and that they were furious she thought she was nearly finished with her construction. So Sarah obediently boarded up 30 rooms and focused on even more expansion. She never again used her then recently acquired (and quite pricey for the time) front doors.

Filled with “modern” amenities, the Winchester mansion includes button-operated lights, nearly 50 fireplaces, parquet floors and gorgeous chandeliers. Almost every window has 13 panes of glass, most floors contained 13 sections and all but one staircase boasts 13 steps. But beyond the architectural oddities and trappings of wealth, it seems the mansion has also trapped a fair share of spirits.

Ghostly animals began to be sighted and many people have reported seeing things ghosting about. People hear mysterious voices, footsteps and doors slamming shut. Cold spots and strange lights appear and then fade away. An employee of the mansion claimed to see a figure of an elderly woman in one of the rooms and asked who they had gotten to portray Mrs. Winchester. Alarmed, a coworker explained they did not have any reenactors. Could it be that Sarah succeeded in trapping the ghosts who dogged her steps for so many years and they still roam the Winchester mansion? Or are the disturbances signs that Sarah herself has never left the building—trapped with the same ghosts she feared?

Today 110 of the 160 rooms are available for tourists to see—but stick with your guide so you don’t become a victim of the wandering designs and maze-like halls!

First of all, I have been to the Winchester Mystery House. It’s so not worth paying almost $30 a person to see. There is only ONE staircase that leads to nowhere. The rest of the house is fairly normal. Strange but nothing really weird. AND, when I asked the tourguide if the place is haunted, she said NO. So, not only is it just basically a regular huge house, it’s not even haunted. Nothing special about it at all, trust me.

I worked for ADT Security Services until last year. The Winchester Mystery House is one of ADT’s clients for Fire Alarm protection. It was my duty on several occasions to walk through the house and inspect the fire sprinkler system which was retrofited to the building some years ago, mandated by California law for a commercial establishment.

I was able to roam the house with only one service personnel. NOTHING happened. NOTHING AT ALL. I spen over 2 hours in the house on each inspection.

No strange noises, no faces in mirrors, no slamming doors, no footstept. That is the bottom line. I am also a big believer in paranormal activity and I wanted to experience something there. Absolutely zilch. Anyone who has posted that they have pictures of these apparitions, or that their cameras have failed, are just story tellers.

I have many pictures of inside the house, I never experienced any camera failure or battery power loss. Whoever said that they had white noise on their digicam’s display is 100% an asshat.

Yes, the house is very creepy. Yes, there are cold spots towards the center of the house due to the lack of light and heating. Yes, you get strange feelings that you are being watched and that you are not alone.

Bottom line, if there are spirits wandering the house, which I do not doubt, they are not there for your amusement. They want to be left alone. And they will not make themselves known to you.

Furthermore, if you want to see some real haunted places in the San Jose area, I did several alarm inspections in COMPLETELY VACANT commercial buildings.

I know these buildings to be completely vacant because I personally took the lock-box off of the front door and opened it for the key. I personally disarmed the alarm.

Yet, walking through these COMPLETELY EMPTY buildings, I would hear chatter and footsteps. I have heard doors close in the opposite end of buildings. I’ve had random power failures. I’ve even had an elevator call activate as I walked by it. All of this has happened within several minutes of initial building entry.

You will not experience ANYTHING similar at the Winchester Mystery House.

Hi..I just wanted to tell you that I grew up 3 miles from the winchester house, and we often would take long hikes on the weekend past this house..I have been there several times and we always took visitors there because they wanted to see it..
My favorite number is also 13 and it has been a very lucky and mystical number..If you remember that 12 Apostles and Jesus+ 13.
When we visited, yes there are cold spots,,,and yes you do get feelings of being touched,,and yes the hair will stand up on your arms, but those of you who chose to ignore it are probably attributing it to something else and that is understandable..
The house is a wonderful place, and yes it has ghosts, but they are not there to harm anyone..I did not ever feel any evil feelings in that house, only otherworldly feelings which albeit are a bit creepy..
The house is magnificent in a west coast sort of way, I was a little disapointed at the type of architecture because it is not grand like hurst castle. But for the era, it is very lovely..remember they were in the wild west, and they did not build in brick and mortar..so if you are expecting an Irish Castle..it is not. But never the less it is beautiful in it’s own right with the gabled rooftops and such.
The staff has gotten worse in between years. You used to be able to go other places in the house, but they walled it all off to make money and make the groups bigger. They cannot afford to let people roam which is the best, and when I was a little girl about 40 years ago, it was alot more fun…But it is worth the cash even though they won’t let you go into most of the house anymore. Go see it..and enjoy..

I grew up in San Jose, but didn’t actually go to the house until I was in my mid-twenties. You know how that goes, you live right next door to a tourist place, but you never go to it.

Anyway, my baby brother and I decided to take the tour. Regardless whether it’s haunted or not, the house itself is fascinating. Any student of archeture (sp) or California history will enjoy even the simplest tours.

The crazy staircase what has the short steps is called “Easy Risers”. I remember that quite well even after 25+ years becauce both my brother and I were quite tall, yet we both have low back problems, so we enjoyed the easy steps it took to go up this particular staircase.

Another feature I found neat was one of the sinks. It had a built-in “washboard” type scrubber in the one side closest to the person, and we were told Sarah had this invention patented. The washboard type ripples were built into the sink’s porcelin or metal, I don’t recall which it was made of now.

Is it haunted? As I remember, nothing happened to either my brother nor myself, nor anyone in the tour. But the charm of the house is not in it’s ghosts, but the history and reasons behind it. It’s not claimed to be haunted so much as it’s the Winchester MYSTERY house, and the mystery is why Sarah had it built the way she did. TV shows I’ve seen have shown some of the workers there in present day have seen some weird things… notably a painter and his son saw what they said was a older gentleman in work clothes who disappeared as they watched.

And yes, I do believe there are spirits. You betcha. But this house? I guess they were out the day I was there.

I think that haunting is pretty interesting. I got to see it on an episode of Ghost Hunters that show is awesome. I want to the kindof stuff they do one day. I love to be scared and creeped out.

I’ve visited this house when I was in my mid teens and was extremely disappointed. It’s true that there are doors leading to brick walls and staircases leading to the ceiling but you aren’t shown the entire house. The tour is short and the house is empty-no furniture of any kind except a ‘gated’ room showing some of the belongings of the owner. The grounds are maintained well but as to be haunted-not sure.
The tour may have changed since my visit so do your homework before going. Happy Haunting.

I’m 14. I went there this year. Maybe in March. I can’t say I had a spooky experience. You could say I actually got a feeling of comfort. There is a room no one is allowed in. We passed by it. The guide told us that Sarah used to perform rituals in there to communicate with the unfriendly spirits. I wanted to go in there desperately. Go figure. Anyway, it was a beautiful house. I took the strange as artistic. But, I know in this case that wasn’t it. I’d encourage anyone to see it. Not for the scare because I doubt you’ll get any. But, it truly is amazing and does leave one mystified by the time your tour is over.

I remember going there when I was a child. It was an interesting tour to me. I remember feeling strange, and a bit scared of it for some reason. I liked the stairs leading up to nothing. But again, in some rooms (which I barely remember which ones specifically), I felt really scared, even though it was during the day, and nothing was physically scary about it. I would like to go back there and see what it’s like now.

I have lived in San Jose all of my life, and have been to the Winchester Mystery House about four or five times. Is it haunted? Depends on who you ask…!

One time many years ago I went on a tour of the house, and I was near the back end on the tour with only one male Japanese tourist behind me. I became annoyed because I was trying to listen to what our tour guide was saying and for some reason he seemingly was tapping me twice on the shoulder to get my attention and ask me something (or so I thought!) I turned around to see what he wanted…and was ASTOUNDED and TOTALLY SHOCKED to see that he was about thirty feet away behind me looking at and taking a photo something on the wall! In other words -THERE WAS NO HUMAN that could have stood behind me and physically tapped me on the shoulder! I didn’t SEE anyone there, but I certainly FELT someone!

That was the only time that anything strange has ever happened to me there, and it was during a bright, hot sunny, summer afternoon. I’ve also been on two nighttime flashlight tours, and another tour on a rainy day and I’ve taken photos – and nothing at all odd happened during those times.

So – I would say – yes, sometimes it’s haunted, and, no, sometimes it isn’t! It just happens to depend on if there’s any spirits around at that particular time, and if they wish to make themselves known to you!
