I am pretty sure that this information is not correct. The town that is in this story is Bucksport, ME, not Old Town, ME. The person in that you are referring to is Jonathan Buck, who Bucksport is named after. There you will find the witches foot upon his gravestone.

To the person who inquired where the cemetary was located of Captain Buck, it’s on the main road in Bucksport, right across from the Shop ‘N Save. You have to park on a side street, then walk around the corner to view the tombstone.

I remember this story from when I grew up in Downeast ME. In the 1980’s there was a highly documented change of the grave stone of Mr.Buck. The stone was changed and guarded for 24 hours by the local police. It was also recorded by a local TV station. Before the sun rose the next morning the boot or foot had apered on the new stone where it still shows up today. When going to Bucksport this is really a must see attraction. I do remember this as a story of a broken heart and if I remember correctly, there was also a heart on the stone. I remember the story being told to me like this.
Mr.Buck was married and had had an affair with the witch. He broke her heart and as not to have her tell the story of his affair he had her hung. This is, as people have already said, about the cemetary in Bucksport. Buck was my something-great-uncle, which is why I’m particularly well-informed in regards to the tombstone. (The only haunting I know of near Old Town is the haunted frat house on the UMaine campus.) As for the location of the cemetary, you need to take Route 1 (not 1A) towards Bar Harbor and the Downeast region. It will take you right past it. If you hit the McDonald’s, you’ve gone too far, but it’s a good place to turn around as the cemetary is on the other side of the road. The tombstone is in the very front corner and has its own sign. Somewhere I have a picture I took of the grave that- scout’s honor- you can see the upper half of a woman hovering over it. Maybe someone else has a picture like that as well?

It is unknown whether or not this son is also the son of Jonathan Buck. There have been chemical and physical attempts at removing the foot on the stone, but nothing has worked.

I have heard various versions of this story. It is also I believe, aside the Saco, this is the most famous of all the ghosts/curses/orbs in Maine.

This info IS NOT TRUE. Every tourist brochure and information book written about Bucksport has this story about the Mayor of BUCKSPORT, not Old Town.

I am glad to see the story corrected several times over. I saw the boot my self several years ago. It looks like a big water stain in the shape of a high boot.

I live in Orono, ME which is like 5 seconds from Old Town and like an hour and 15 minutes away from Bucksport where the grave stone REALLY is. I have seen this mark with my own eyes several times, its always in the EXACT same place with the EXACT same shape. I am also an artist and I KNOW that no one is redrawing it over and over. it looks kind of like a water stain would, excpet i dont think granite or whatever stone it’s made of would stain like that.

The leg on Col Buck’s head stone is awesome. Yes there are many legends. One is that after the burning at the steak all remains was found except her leg. There is a headstone in Stonington on the grave of a chicken farmer. He was said to burn his farm for insurance money. On his stone is the outline of a chicken. Many who do not understand these mystic occurances pass it off as unbeleif or fairytail. When I was a small boy about 40 years ago I was told the story by a very elderly resident. I was told diffrently as far as the story goes. John Buck was a Doctor, the witch had hurt her foot and it turned gang green. She refused to let him cut off her leg. But he had any way and cursed him for it saying my foot will haunt you for enternity. Thus the foot keeps reappearing.
