Witch’s Castle
Once a stone trading shack during the 1600s, this haunt is located at the crossroads of two trails leading to the coast of Oregon. At the site, it is said that there are “ghost wars.” If one happens to be there during one of these rituals, it is almost impossible for him to get away.

Was just up there today and took pictures. Not haunted at all. The entire trail up there is obviously a WPA project if you know what to look for. http://www.1nova.com/photoblog/?p=660

As other commenters noted this is just a restroom built in the 1930′s. Even without that little bit of information how could you possibly believe this was a trading post built in the 1600′s? There are so many flaws in that it’s ridiculous! You shouldn’t have to be exceptionally smart to notice them either. Although there was some European exploration of Oregon’s coast in the 1600′s the “Witch’s Castle” is far from the coast. There were only Native Americans in that specific area at the time and as far as we know they did not build structures like this. Why would there be a trading post on a small trail in the middle of the woods? The trails in the park weren’t even created until the last century and do not go all the way to the coast.

I’m sorry, but I live in portland and that place is on what is called the wildwood trail in forest park. It was not even there in the 1600′s because there was no white people in this area in the 1600′s. And in fact the “witchhouse” was built in the 1930′s and was a mens and womens restroom! So, get your freakin facts strait.

Nice pictures, Rick… but I have to point out, just to avoid confusion, that the plaque denoting the place as the Balch homestead is NOT located near the “stone house.” The land it is on once belonged to the Balch family, but the facility itself was certainly not part of their living quaters… and definetly not the site of Balch’s hanging, as some sources suggest.

This was never a trading shack, it was a bathroom built in the 1930′s and abonded/destroyed by a storm in the 60′s. It sits NEAR the original cabin of the Balch family, but no one was ever hung at the location. But it is creepy looking I’ll give ya that.

Portland Local Haunts investigated the witches castle using inferred cameras, evps, and cameras and in the process of our investigation of the castle from 7:00 till 11:00 and came up empty. the history of the building was that in fact the public and parks department built the structure on land that was donated by the family of the first man hung in Oregon, but he was not hanged there. we decided to stay until midnight to see if we could find some evidence of the native battles at the head of the fork in the trail next to the castle. according to myth at midnight two native tribes meet there to relive a battle that once happened there. during a group evp session we picked up some strange evps and some of the members could hear clambering in the woods and others felt very uncomfortable. i believe there is something happening at this location i just don’t know whether the haunting has anything to do with the castle as much as the location.

This is a Portland landmark with many stories surrounding it. However, it was never the home of a witch, nor was it a trading post! The actual structure dates only back to the 1950′s. The story of the family which owned the land IS quite interesting & perhaps the claims of hauntings in the area are true… Check out the REAL story of “Witches Castle”:

1600′s huh? That is impressive since European settlers didn’t arrive on the continent until late 1600′s (bringing the concept of “witches” with them) and Oregon wasn’t settled until around 1842 and cement wasn’t widely available until the 1800′s. This shack is truly magical.

Do your research people!!! this building is NOT from the 1600′s, it was actually built in the 1930′s ss a PUBLIC RESTROOM!! the storm of 1962 flooded it out, so the parks dept. simply gutted it and left the stone structure. the top floor was the mens and womens bathroom, and the bottom “allegedly haunted” room was nothing more than a janitorial/ maintenance closet….sorry to poop on your parade
